mouth ulcers

I have a mouth ulcer at the moment and it's painful, on and off. I've looked it up on the 'net and they all say it should only last a week or so, and get better by itself.
In the meanwhile, any ideas for soothing the pain? I tried toothpaste which made it worse.

Dab it with witch hazel on a cotton bud or bit of cottonwool to dry it up and numb it a bit.

I used to swear by Corlan pellets but you can only get them on prescription now. Maybe rinsing with salt water several times a day will help.

I literally put salt on the wound. It hurts like hell but usually kills it after one or two applications.

You have my sympathy, I've suffered the nasty little blighters since my teenage years.

I suffered with ghastly mouth ulcers for years (something like 20) and then started taking Feroglobin b12 and it is like a miracle - that was a year ago and with the very odd exception I have been clear of them since.
However saying all that I actually think that I suffer from either celiac or lBS and intend at some time to get diagnosed as my symptoms seem to tie in and having cut down/nearly eliminated gluten the symptoms are much better but not totally gone so we shall see.

I use 'Iglu' or Bonjela from the chemists.
It could be you have low Vit C or Zinc levels, I find that since I started taking a multivitamin tablet daily I've been free from ulcers (fingers crossed!)

I had some really nasty mouth ulcers in the run up to my State Finals. I told the ward sister about them, she couldn't recommend anything to help, but she did say that they were usually psychosomatic, and when my finals were over they would go away without any treatment. She was right! Also, I passed.

I am troubled by mouth ulcers and the only thing that I have found that helps is Adcortyl in Orabase /Triamcinolone Acetonide in Oromucosal Paste. This is on the tube! I get it on Prescription. It is very good and the ulcers clear up in no time at all!

I have auto immune conditions and take immuno suppressants that can lead to mouth ulcers. A combination of vitamin c and zinc helps the immune system. Corsydol mouth wash sorts the ulcers out, though it can stain the teeth. Good luck!

Mouth ulcers are a symptom of Lupus so worth getting that checked out.

Try changing your toothpaste for Kingfisher (from health food shops). It is missing some ingredient that ordinary toothpastes have - I can never remember what - SFS or something like that!

Tegan Tue 05-May-15 21:14:47

It's some sort of foaming agent. I kept getting strange blisters in my mouth shockand read that some people have problems with this foaming agent.....

Tegan Tue 05-May-15 21:20:08

Sodium Laurel Sulphate. Supposed to be pretty bad for you [it's in shampoo as well]. I did stop using toothpaste with it in and the blisters did go away but it may just have been a coincidence. But it was another reason why I always rinsed my mouth after brushing, but now can't do so as I need the sensitve toothpaste to stay on my teeth #can'twin

Thanks for all the ideas - I've been using the wrong toothpaste, I think I have some Sensidyne somewhere.
Also I've been dabbing on tea tree oil. Slightly better now (fingers crossed.)

I use Bonjela for ulcers which puts a protective white coat of film over the ulcer.

However a warning put the bottle in a locked cabinet as it is lethal for children 12 and under.

It does stop the pain until it fades away.

DH and DD1 both suffered from ulcers (possibly stress related?) but rarely get them since changing tooth paste! (Thanks for the info, Tegan). There is another make called something like Arm and Hammer.

I'm a salt neat on the ulcer person, once you scrape yourself off the ceiling the ulcer will be on the way out. Bonjela otherwise but takes a lot longer.

Tricia, I had very severe mouth ulcers for years on and off and I was having 4 or 5 at a time and they could last for weeks. Like other people I realise that I am sensitive to sodium laurel sulphate in toothpaste. Since changing to Corsodyl or ProNamel toothpaste I very rarely have problems these days.
The ulcers do seem to come back occasionally when I'm under severe stress . As my building project comes to a close I have a few incipience ones but generally the toothpaste helps a lot. I hope you recover soon, it is most unpleasant.

TriciaF Tue 26-May-15 21:59:34

Thanks, Sewsilver - just seen your post.
A few days ago I felt another ulcer starting. I dabbed it with tea tree oil every few hours for a day or 2 and it seems to have gone ( hopefully.)

Tegan.....re sensitive teeth, dental hygienist told me to use toothpaste as a paste at night. Just put some on your finger tip and rub it into your teeth and leave. Less dilute and takes longer to wear off.

I hope you are doing fine now and all your ulcers have disappeared. I can understand the pain as even i had suffered. Anyone who gets it can cure it with these home remedies i can assure it works great as i have been following few of these tips myself especially the coconut oil tip.
