Did the Earth move for you last night ?

Did any of our GNers experience the earthquake in Kent during the night ?

absent Fri 22-May-15 08:01:02

Not in Kent but I have experienced a few here (NZ). Apparently, it has now been discovered that I am living directly over a fault line – not exactly straight down absent street but you get the idea. What does always surprise me is that, given the popular belief that animals know when an earthquake/tsunami/whatever is approaching, they show signs of distress; my cats sleep through the whole thing.

I was curious about the heading ! No. Where in kent ?

Teetime Fri 22-May-15 09:27:15

No we tend to wait for Sunday morning - Oh you mean the earthquake.wink

vampirequeen Fri 22-May-15 09:27:55

I thought you were asking about another subject grin

We didn't have an earthquake last night but we had one a few years ago. It's a really weird sensation. I always thought it would be a shaking up and down sensation but actually it's a wavy motion beneath you that makes you fall over or in my case fall out of bed grin

grin Thought my title may have caught a few eyes. Would I ask such a personal question as you thought ?.

According to the news it was felt all over Kent and along the Essex coast up to Clacton. Didn't notice anything here, but it would take a lot to wake me.

Couldn't have reached this far. Or I was asleep.

I never gave a thought to the other thing. Guessed an earthquake straight off. #pureasthedriven

Teetime, you beat me to to that! grin

I've been trying to get hold of my sister to ask her that very question. pompa. She lives in Broadstairs so quite close to the epicenter in Ramsgate.

ninathenana Fri 22-May-15 15:21:56

I'm in N Kent the epicentre was Sandwich but apparently it was felt in Norfolk. It happened about 3am and several people were woken by the whole house shaking.

We didn't feel/hear a thing !

Nelliemoser Fri 22-May-15 16:04:22

At magnitude 4.2 that was quite a big earthquake for the UK but it was deeper than many recent ones.
How many of these did we hear anything about?

When you read the list below about these earthquakes in the last 50 days in UK waters and realise they have happened regularly without anyone doing any fracking, it might lend a different slant to the idea that they might be caused by fracking. Kent is a former mining area.

My daughter is in Kent and none of them felt it. We had one here in Suffolk about 6 or 7 years ago, an it felt as if a lorry was driving under my house. I suspect most people were deeply asleep. Its odd how many happen at night.

Our Son and future wife lived in Appleby N.Lincs in 2008, that earthquake did make the earth move for them, they reckon their bed moved across the floor.!

The nearest to a earth quake I got was in Atlanta, I was in a conference with some colleges from California. There was a rumble, the floor shook, tiles fell off the ceiling etc. The Cal guys all dived under the table, to the mirth of the local guys, who explained that there was a quarry less than half a mile away and today was blasting day.

Pompa, I remember the 2008 one, I was still up, everyone else in bed, and the settee moved about 6inches away from the wall, very weird feeling.

Lucky here aren't we?Must be awful to live in a country with serious earthquakes.Didn't feel anything here, too far from Kent.

NanKate Fri 22-May-15 22:06:57

We are staying in West Sussex looking after the grandchildren. We were so tired last night there could have been a volcanic eruption and we wouldn't have noticed it. smile

No offence meant to the people in Nepal.

pompa Sat 23-May-15 09:18:45

There was a post else where as a spoof reporting of the Kent earthquake which I though was not only amusing but also thought provoking regarding just how awful the quakes in other countries are. I am not going to post it here as I'm sure some will not get the irony and find it in bad taste.

Nelliemoser Sat 23-May-15 09:54:03

Number I slept through that. My nephew who was staying was shaken by it and and I did not even notice.

Soutra Sat 23-May-15 10:52:09

I think it was entirely caused by Thanet voting in a UKIP council, myself. wink
