After alway's long hair down the middle of my back my DD suggested that I have a complete restyle and go short,I've alway's had long hair and even after chemo treatment was fortunate to have it grow back in reasonable condition,I wear it in a plait or scrunched up with a big clip or in a pony-tail,am at a loss as to what to do and if I went for a complete change of style would I regret it confused

It will always grow again. I had long hair and had it cut in stages - shoulder length to chin bob to spikey. I've tried growing it again for a change but I think it now ages me. I feel 'funkier' with short locks - and not so grey!!! AND it's much easier to wash and look after. I think you have to be comfortable with your stylist though and be confident that they understand what you're aiming for and your hair type and face shape.

Since I had my very long hair chopped (now got a chin length bob) I have found that it is much MORE work. Even with an excellent cut it still requires blow drying or straighteners every day. You also have to factor in the six weekly hairdressers, time and money consuming, visit. Finally, I miss the versatility of being able to tie it back quickly for gardening, pleat it neatly for 'business' or sweep it up on top for an occasion.

Although the family and my same age friends insist that the cut takes years off me and is very smart I do feel as if I have lost a bit of 'me'. And no, it is not easy to let it grow long again, as you have to spend months with the neither one thing nor t'other length which looks so unkempt.

You could always get extensions, Granny23, while you grow your hair again. Think of the variety of styles you could have!

More discussion's over lunch to-day re my possible restyle my DGD came up with the idea of trying out some wig's to see if I feel comfortable with shorter hair ?

I have just had my hair cut short after growing it to all one length over a couple of years. I have always had to have a perm to give it some lift as my hair is thick and lies flat.
I do find having it short hard work and have to use a ton of products to lift it...I can see a perm coming before long.
My daughter is my hairdresser and persuaded me to have it short.
I love a bouncy, wavy bob best !

grumpyoldwoman I have thought of having a cut up to maybe my shoulder's and having a soft perm, but yrs ago I had a perm and it seemed to take age's to grow out,in fact I'm sure it grew through curly for some reasonhmm

I wear my hair short now, but used to have shoulder length hair for years in various styles.

I think it is down to the cut you have as to how much you need to do to it, it takes me 10mins to dry it and thats it for the day. Only down side is going every 5 weeks to have a trim.

glamma there are sites on the internet where you can down load your photograph and try different hair styles and colours, might be worth having a go it will give you an idea what to expect and what will/wont suit you.

My hair is short now and it has got more wavy as I got older. As a teenager it was dead straight, as a "young mum" is was below shoulder length and usually tied up in bunches or a plait. But it's been short for years now and I like it that way. Like glass it takes no time at all, a quick wash in the shower, towel dry and brush through. Don't even need to blow dry unless it's a chilly day (I'm outside as soon as I'm dressed these days). I'm lucky in that I go to a retired hairdressers house every 6 weeks for a wet cut and she only charges me £10.
You could always go shorter in stages and see how you feel with each stage.

I've heard of those site's glass think I may have a go to-morrow and see what I come up with,I alway's have a good cut every 2/3mths all the end's etc and my hairdresser blunt cuts the ends so it doesn't look tatty with it being so long,I think I am just feeling ready for a change and DD saying you don't see many 60ish women with such long hair may have hit at the wrong time as I don't feel anywhere near 60ish in my mind, maybe just at a low ebb with me being ill all week ignore the moan girl's.

glassortwo Sun 16-Oct-11 23:30:49

glamma if you like your hair as it is tell DD go and jump your happy as you are grin grin

yogagran Sun 16-Oct-11 23:31:59

Feel free to moan - we all need to do that sometimes and we're a willing crowd to listen. If you like your hair long, then leave it long until you're sure. How about treating yourself to a facial, pedicure or something like that - just for you. As the advert says "because you're worth it"

glassortwo Sun 16-Oct-11 23:32:39

Are you feeling any better glamma

glammanana Sun 16-Oct-11 23:45:53

All bunged up with cold not eaten very much all week drank loads of juice so running for a wee all the time so not very happy,I think my DD say's thing's before she put's her brain into gear sometime's,and the boy's wouldn't notice if I did a No1 all over, but at least my hair products bill would be less.

glassortwo Sun 16-Oct-11 23:53:31

They all seem to have a problem speaking before they think, my DD is the same,You could get one of those mohican (sp) wigs and see if they notice grin grin

Have a hot toddy before you go to bed, my OG usually makes me one if I am full of cold, dont know what he puts in it but I sleep like a top.

glassortwo Sun 16-Oct-11 23:54:46

Or maybe should be a log confused

glassortwo Sun 16-Oct-11 23:55:35

Well I am off to bed, hope you feel better in the morning, night.

About 20 years ago when I was in my early forties I decided to grow my short hair a little longer. The comment from my sister was that when women get older they should wear their hair short. I have remembered the comment. I did grow my hair into a just above the sholulder bob. Totally impractical for my lifestlye and requires a visit to the hairdressers every five weeks but I love it. I refuse to conform to someone elses stereotype of how an older woman should wear her hair.

Wear your hair in a style you like glammanana

nanachrissy Mon 17-Oct-11 16:12:33

Glamma, my hair is short for a while, then I grow it long and it drives me mad, then short again........ the answer is, do what you feel like and you can always change it. Sometimes a complete change does you good wink

Ariadne Mon 17-Oct-11 17:19:40

When my hair came back after chemo, and it grew a little, I, and my female friends, loved it. It was so Judy Dench; a tiny bit curly and absolute bliss to maintain. It was also very grey, which I soon dealt with, but I would have kept it that short for ever. BUT DH, who isn't given to commenting much about my appearance, hated it, (think it might be that he linked it with the cancer) as did my sons, so I let it grow a bit. But I did like it....

NannaAnna Mon 17-Oct-11 17:36:04

I've just started growing mine again as I feel now that I'm older a short style looks too butch on me!
I'm also contemplating letting the 'natural' grey grow through. I've been colouring my hair since I was 35 (last daughter turned me grey ;)
I've been admiring a work colleague who has long grey hair, and it looks fab!
And there is a gorgeous older model with long, grey, flowing locks too - looks beautiful.
Do whatever makes you feel good and ignore well-meaning 'advice'
Your life - your hair - your decision! smile

Thanks girls have just had a wash and shampoo and condition and must admit I do prefer my hair longer even though it takes over an hour to dry it,the weather here to-day has confirmed my opinion too as it has been very wet and windy and with my hair in a big plait it at least stayed tidy when out at the shops.thanks

jogginggirl Mon 17-Oct-11 19:19:12

Good for you glammanana ............my sis-i-l tells me all the time that women shouldn't grow their hair after they hit 40.........yes....you've guessed it, mine is shoulder-length and platinum blonde (turned out it was my natural colour after years of colouring) hmm
Hope you are feeling better x

nanachrissy Mon 17-Oct-11 19:39:55

Sometimes just making the decision makes you feel better! grin
