A cosy retreat that ISN'T about Christmas?

whenim64 Wed 05-Dec-12 10:59:31

Not at all unreasonable Alie. Do you want something that is warm and cosy from the winter weather, or a summer retreat that could be away from this time of year, with Pimms and lemonade, the sound of children splashing around in the pool outside, and a holiday book to read whilst you put your feet up.....or something else? smile

AlieOxon Wed 05-Dec-12 11:03:07

Some place warm, soft and cosy, with good conversation and get away from the commercialism and hype!
Darkish with a log fire and soft lighting?

I wouldn't mind getting snowed in there....

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 11:05:34

I'm snowed in and my flat is warm and cosy, but my only conversation is by phone or on the net. I am very happy with my mountain retreat.

Why don't we have a virtual cosy retreat round at Greatnan's then (is it ok if we invite ourselves round for lunch Greatnan?) What about a separate thread? Would a log fire be ok in your mountain retreat? grin

Somewhere in Suffolk? Time has bye-passed many places there. smile

jO5 Wed 05-Dec-12 11:13:38

Leave your laptop at home.

jO5 Wed 05-Dec-12 11:14:14

Some nice old inns for conversation and company.

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 11:29:44

All welcome, when, even though it might get a bit crowded! I have just made a very large pan of chicken broth, packed with vegetables - very good in this weather. Bring your luges and you can slide down the hill behind the flat.

whenim64 Wed 05-Dec-12 11:44:28

What an image - Gransnetters sliding down mountains! Where do you want these logs? Shall I put them on your balcony? Here's some home-made crusty bread to go with that chicken broth. Where do you keep the glasses Greatnan? I've got some brandy off a passing St Bernard dog. grin

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 11:47:50

One thing I have got plenty of - glasses of all shapes and sizes. I bought the flat fully furnished and equipped and they obviously liked a tipple or two!
Wonder how the neighbours would feel if we lit a fire on the balcony?

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 12:19:43

AlieOxon...I peeked around the door and thought to myself, yes, I like it here. Thank goodness! Hello, you lot grin

whenim64 Wed 05-Dec-12 12:21:23

Wouldn't walked you locked up for arson Greatnan! Does this thread need to park itself next to the Gransnet Grotto, so everyone can pop in and out as they choose, depending on whether they've had enough of Christmas cheer or want some relief from it smile

whenim64 Wed 05-Dec-12 12:22:03

...walked??? want, that should say!

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 12:23:57

I hope the ban on Christmas cheer does not extend to a glass or two of Buck's Fizz - I enjoy that all the year round! We just won't mention the C word.

AlieOxon Wed 05-Dec-12 12:50:20

Actually I haven't managed to get there yet....Stuck on the road somewhere in Suffolk - jO, can I stop at your inn tonight? I don't like driving in snow....

- if some of us can meet here, we can all carry on together. Get to Greatnan's eventually!

Hey, I remember Buck's Fizz.

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 12:53:08

Just head from Geneva towards Mont Blanc! I will have the champagne chilling. What kind of music shall we have - I have most kinds except rap, grunge and heavy metal! (I don't know what they are!)

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 13:11:13

Something by the Inkspots, perhaps? Andy Williams? Nat King Cole? Sarah Vaughn? Billie Epstein?

Greatnan Wed 05-Dec-12 13:14:13

Definitely Andy Williams. Neil Diamond? John Denver? Some Country and Western? Brass Bands? Male voice choir? Gregorian Plain Chant? Great Hits of the 50's, 60's and 70s? And for me, 'Now you has jazz'.

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 13:23:58

Danny Williams? Abba? Johnny Cash? Edith Piaf? grin

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 13:26:52

Hang on...where are my dancing shoes...the black ballerinas with sparkly things on...

feetlebaum Wed 05-Dec-12 13:29:13

Jacques Brel, Mel Tormé, Rosemary Clooney, Jonathan & Darlene Edwards... (perhaps not) Duke Ellington, Spike Jones... The Singers Unlimited.. oh, I could go on...and on...

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 13:31:34

please do, feetlebaum the party is ongoing. grin

jO5 Wed 05-Dec-12 13:34:22

I thought you really wanted ideas AlieOxon!

soop Wed 05-Dec-12 13:34:31

I'm already beginning to enjoy myself. Shall we have some mulled wine with our afternoon "fancy" [that's a wee cake, I believe.] Someone can put me right if they wish...
