As a younger member of this community I want to take great care not to offend any of the other Gransnetters. I would be grateful for you input into how best to address you as a community. Would the term 'Senior user' be considered to be defamatory when talking about your use of the internet or would you rather the more colloquial 'Silver Surfer'.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Adam

(And I can spell "postage" it's just that my dinner was burning)

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 25-Mar-14 20:27:32

Galen grin

Galen Tue 25-Mar-14 20:23:31

Well said Cari
I resent being a GP (guinea pig) not medical sort unless I'm paid for it!
In fact my late husband was a founder member of the Institute of data processing managers, as well as a Bsc (eng) M. Tech. C Eng, MIDPM.
That's why I never wrote to him! Took too long to address the envelope.

Btw, Adam. My hair is silver.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 25-Mar-14 20:13:28

Right...

1) No post will be removed for the use of the word senior (even though it is clearly not the descriptive word of choice

2) No one gets to do research for ANYTHING on Gransnet unless it is through the correct channels. That's absolutely not what the general forums are for. But hey, you all know this (hence the number of reports!)

3) There are no mysteries on Gransnet (other than who finished the cake when I wasn't looking)

4) We quite like being called "mods" (even though some of us are rockers)

5) What gransnetters don't know about the internet, tablets, smart phones etc etc (I need to make sure my dinner doesn't burn so keeping it short - suspicious smells from oven) could be written on a posatge stamp.

Hopefully that clarifies everything for everyone grin

Well, this thread's generated 71 posts since 5.30-ish so it's served some purpose! grin

Poor Adam, I don't think GN is quite what he was expecting! Or perhaps it is and we have fallen into the trap . . . . .

Mamie Tue 25-Mar-14 19:58:50

I think Adam, that you need to think about exactly what you want to know and why. Then work on developing targeted, specific questions that will give answers to what you are trying to find out and enable you to process, analyse, synthesise and use the data.
As others have said, many people on here have been using computers and developing systems and applications for over forty years. There is a lot of expertise, but you won't draw it out unless you ask the right questions.
I hope this helps.

Ana Tue 25-Mar-14 19:49:42

Which direction do you want pointing in, Adam?

Elegran Tue 25-Mar-14 19:48:41

Just thought - do you need to address us as a community at all? If you have anything to say, just say it.

Queen Victoria detested Gladstone because he always "addressed me as if I were a public meeting".

afieldio Tue 25-Mar-14 19:45:54

Elegran if you could point me in the right direction then I will leave you all in peace.

Thank you.

Elegran Tue 25-Mar-14 19:45:03

I think you have cracked it, Adam. Gransnetters are a scary lot.

afieldio Tue 25-Mar-14 19:42:35

thatsbags - I am trying to comply with the law of Gransnet but it's like the wild west in this place.

jingl Clearly the cake did not contain anything unconventional. I must say that this thread has certainly livened up my morning. Must go and eat and eat some breakfast, but not cake.

Ana Tue 25-Mar-14 19:33:01

You could try bleach, rosequartz! grin

Ana Tue 25-Mar-14 19:32:20

He posted one on Ask a Gran and one on Ask a Grandad.

rosequartz Tue 25-Mar-14 19:30:53

Damn! How do I get the red pen off my tablet?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 25-Mar-14 19:23:21

Pardon Absent? confused

I am only wondering why the thread this morning was deleted. hmm

Elegran Tue 25-Mar-14 19:22:45

If you read through the forum subjects, I think you will find quite a few relevant comments to your questions.

Riverwalk Tue 25-Mar-14 19:20:51

I think you're floggin' a dead horse here Adam grin

Ariadne Tue 25-Mar-14 19:19:27

If it is just a discussion topic, I will stop offering advice. If it is research, then you need to sharpen up the way in which you express yourself, your grammar and your spelling.

Please note the "if"!

Elegran Tue 25-Mar-14 19:18:41

So the consensus is, exactly what you call us doesn't matter, but whatever you choose, it will not be relevant (or acceptable) to everyone.

And whatever image you have of the interests, ability and attitude of a person of an older generation using a computer, there will probably be more who do not fit that generalisation than do fit it. There are as many variations as there are varieties of younger person online. There is not a magic transformation as 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90 are reached.

Vive la difference.

thatbags Tue 25-Mar-14 19:17:30

That is not a rephrasing of your original post. It's something else entirely.
