Just saw this over on mumsnet and it did make me laugh. Al Paseeno? My dear old grandfather used to pronounce the z in Chez Fred his local fish and chip shop. Such a funny memory.

Should be "butterflies" not butterfiles!

Ever since they first appeared on the scene, our family has always referred to Bucks Fizz with the first letters reversed!

One child from Surrey rendered the hymn as,"There is a green hill Farnham way".Lovely!

I've just found this thread and thete are some gems here.

One of my favourites is a young child of my acquaintance who solemnly informed me that God's first name is Peter.

Because we say 'Thanks Peter God'.

And, dating from when our son was small, we still stack the pots in the doshwisher.

My mum used to sound her aitches where there aren't any and struggled with the word 'iota'. She would say, 'I couldn't care one high hooter'.

I can remember Gordon Brown in his budget speech saying the price of cigarettes (or something) was going to be increased by one pence.

My honorary Mum always says "what the hair oil's that?" Always makes me smile.

One of my daughters had dyslexic tendencies when little (somehow grew out of it and is now a magazine editor!) and mis-read lots of labels - the family still refer to a certain tinned fish as 'Slid'.....

Our favourite is probably country trees for conservatory from DGS aged 4!

mrsmopp Sun 12-Oct-14 13:34:59

My MiL used to say, 'I'm losing my facilities now I'm getting older'.
Oh, I know that feeling!

Katek Wed 15-Oct-14 12:10:58

Alygran....nice word for a conservatory where I live is a "sitootery"! (Sit-out-ery)

Katek Wed 15-Oct-14 14:02:08

My DGS has always had his own vocabulary and even at 8 still says nooz for use and weeout for without. Some of his early words included ambleeance and binocleers. It hasn't helped having close family from Wick, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Lanarkshire!!

Icyalittle Wed 15-Oct-14 14:49:09

My bugbear is people who say 'pronounciation' - including a Speech Therapist I know....

kalexie Sun 19-Oct-14 11:36:09

Our Daughter, when really young, couldn't get her tongue round "crisps" and used to call them pisses.

Whenever she had a bag she would say "do you want a p*ss?".

annodomini Sun 19-Oct-14 20:10:23

We used to eat 'ambadade' and 'beeannos' when we were kids.

My gs calls planes 'up there' as we point at them and say 'look, up there'.
i had an Uncle Cyril and for years, until I was quite old, thought his name was Squirrel.
A local lady, when recounting a story about the 'naughty boys' school' in our village, told me that the boys 'went on a ravage and decimated their dormobiles' .

Nonu Mon 20-Oct-14 15:40:05

SUE, your post 3/9;1507.
Was reading in the weekend newspaper that they are bringing out a new series of MAPP & LUCIA, I am thrilled, as I used to love it when it was on in the 70"s

My eldest daughter used to call fizzy pop, pissy pop. It used to make my mum laugh so much.

Grannylin Mon 20-Oct-14 17:17:22

DD2 when small, after listening to her sister singing said 'Give her a round of the floors'!
DGS , this weekend after too long in his carseat, reckoned he had 'pins and noodles'

rubysong Tue 21-Oct-14 11:56:54

A giraffe of wine.

MamaCaz Thu 23-Oct-14 10:15:35

I daren't say St Pancras without mentally checking first that I've got the right word, as St Pancreas is just as likely to come out of my mouth!

DGS (age 3) says he likes chicken con carne.

In our family we all now pronounce asparagus with the stress on the second 'a' because that's how our son's Russian partner used to say it.

The one that most bugs me (out of a big list, because I'm a grumpy old thing !!!): pronounciation instead of pronunciation.

mrsmopp Thu 23-Oct-14 10:27:19

Asparagus?? Don't you mean Sparrow Grass??

Ana Thu 23-Oct-14 10:55:16

How else would you pronounce 'asparagus'? confused

(or did you mean the third 'a' MamaCaz?)

feetlebaum Thu 23-Oct-14 11:55:39

@mrsmopp - the boy Blair was also guilty of 'one pence' in Parliament.

@Nonu - I think you'll find that 'Mapp and Lucia' was a 1980s production (1985). How tarsome!

feetlebaum Thu 23-Oct-14 11:57:21

My dear mother use to say 'vitamims', and 'ruband', for 'ribbon'. That last might have had some historicity - she had worked in a drapery shop as a girl, selling lace.
