Wrong and utterly stupid pronunciations...

I recently heard a news-re3ader refer to someone who may have committed a crime as "a susPECT"

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he was going deaf.

I'm not sure how I didn't explode today. We went to Wisley, and overheard as a young boy asked his grandfather 'What is cyanide?'.

It's not difficult to say 'fifth' either, but 'fith' seems to have become the norm...

Or instead of height, they say heighth, adding a th on the end. Have heard this a lot. But it's not good manners to correct people is it? So how do you handle it? Do you then just say 'height' without emphasising it? It is so tempting to correct people, but not a nice thing to do.

People who say ' sickth' instead of sixth. It's really not difficult to say sixth.

Back in the year 2000 my mum insisted on calling the the new 'me nelly um' instead of millennium. Agghhhh!

Annoyingly, some people who should know better that they are pronouncing the 'cc' in words like access as if they were 'ss' - assess. I have even heard 'assidental'. How on earth does this come about?

My dear mother use to say 'vitamims', and 'ruband', for 'ribbon'. That last might have had some historicity - she had worked in a drapery shop as a girl, selling lace.

Asparagus?? Don't you mean Sparrow Grass??

I daren't say St Pancras without mentally checking first that I've got the right word, as St Pancreas is just as likely to come out of my mouth!

DGS (age 3) says he likes chicken con carne.

In our family we all now pronounce asparagus with the stress on the second 'a' because that's how our son's Russian partner used to say it.

The one that most bugs me (out of a big list, because I'm a grumpy old thing !!!): pronounciation instead of pronunciation.
