To think the school has not dealt with this well?

Hello- my dgd (11) came home from World Book Day very upset. The boy she sits next to had tied her up and put a mask on her. She said she asked him to stop but he said it was just a joke and anyway she was enjoying it really. When he finally untied her she told the teacher but the teacher just said to count herself lucky that he hadn't dressed up as a series killer or James Bond because then she might have had something to really tell tales about. The teacher then said that there was also a useful lesson in post- feminist irony to be learnt here and that next week the class would explore the concept of irony through Jane Austens novels. When my dd rang up to complain about the tying up, the teacher explained about how it was all jolly good fun and that WBD had proved its worth yet again as the class were now to be introduced to the work of Jane Austen . The teacher said last year WBD had also been useful as someone dressed up as a character from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and that had led onto the class reading the James Bond novels. AIBU to think that the school has not dealt with this well?

Maybe it's because I know my Jane Austen pretty well, that I was able to detect the irony of the OP. grin

As I seem to be the only person who has admitted to reading one and a half books, I will answer your question.
I thought, that though she found it all rather weird, it was consensual and at no time did I think she was being raped.
This from a person who loathed Wolf Hall, far too much violence in my opinion.

blush Sorry!

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 07-Mar-15 09:54:41

I'm almost starting to wish I'd read this book now. Almost.

Was all the stuff in it consensual?

Yes he was Anya. DD was furious when GD came home and explained she deserved being punched because she (because the deputy Head said so) interfered (stood up for her friend). What sort of message does that give a young girl? My SIL said the deputy ended up apologising to GD, after SIL took time off work and spoke to him the very next day.

If two people are having a S & M session is the masochist a victim though?

I don't think he or she is.

Would you consider men who like to employ the services of a dominatrix victims?

Anya Sat 07-Mar-15 07:26:08

I did read the first few chapters too Ginny but gave up. I'm not a fan of anything that portrays women as victims.

I haven't seen the film Anya but I did try to read the book. I'm not sure Culture comes into it !

Anya Fri 06-Mar-15 22:26:15

Yes Ginny some of us CBA to read threads about 50 shades, or the book so we're at a cultural disadvantage.

Anya Fri 06-Mar-15 22:22:33

Faye being punched in the stomach is assault and that Deputy HT was completely in the wrong to make her apologise.

ginny Fri 06-Mar-15 22:21:45

Not having read the other thread that has been referred to , I didn't realise for a while that the op was supposed to be a spoof. Now I'm confused as I don't know if I should be amused or not. confused

Anya Fri 06-Mar-15 22:16:28

Petra that was my point exactly. No one would have got as far as tying up either of my GDs. Can i remind G2 thst she said in her OP that Her GD 'asked him to stop'....well my GDs would have shouted it from the rooftops and probably kicked him in the goolies for good measure.

petallus Fri 06-Mar-15 21:41:53

This thread isn't funny.

ninathenana Fri 06-Mar-15 21:22:05

rosequartz see grannytwice post at 18.15

I certainly took the OP as a spoof. There were no replies when I first read it but I didn't know how to respond.

loopylou Fri 06-Mar-15 20:04:26

I clearly seem to have a total lack of sense of humour if it was to be viewed as a joke confused & sad

Faye Fri 06-Mar-15 19:55:46

The book I happen to be reading now is Mansfield Park. It's lovely to be able to just click on a link and there are all of Jane Austen books to read for free.

rosequartz Fri 06-Mar-15 19:45:27

Twerly.

Off to do my Old Granny Knitting.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Mar-15 19:42:38

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Mar-15 19:41:27

Myt grandson's on the Famous Five at the moment. He could have gone in ordinary clothes. (I hope his mum thought of that)

rosequartz Fri 06-Mar-15 19:41:01

It was a joke, wasn't it?
Irony and all that?

If not, sorry for being flippant!

Off to read Sense and Sensibility grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Mar-15 19:40:01

Surely not aggie! shock

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Mar-15 19:39:32

I totally agree with you.

GrannyTwice, is she ok now?

aggie Fri 06-Mar-15 19:39:19

Oh dear I read the post as a joke about the Christian Grey episode hmm

petra Fri 06-Mar-15 19:38:26

I pity any boy (or girl) who ever attempts to do anything like that to my DGD. They certainly wouldn't do it again.
