Do you wear knickers in bed?

Last night I ended up having a rather heated debate with a friend about whether you should wear knickers in bed. She said absolutely not - you should let your 'bits' air. I said yes - because then you don't have to change your pyjamas every singles day and also because it just feels better. Who is right? (Me obviously but interested to know what others think)

Lucky you, Lupatria, only having to wear a liberty bodice at primary school, I was forced to wear mine for several years at grammar school blush. I suppose I should be grateful that it wasn't one with suspenders dangling from the hem! Luckily I discovered that it was easy to hide in the toilet when changing for Games!
I still won't wear a vest to this day, due to the trauma!

I was also another who was made to wear a roll-on to 'support the abdominal muscles', when I was stick thin. Wore it with very thick ugly tights. Ugh! I hated them!

I was practically traumatised for life just by the mere appearance of one. I was about to start secondary school and was suddenly hauled into Woolies by my mother. Luckily for me, the sales assistant (goodness, they must have still had them!) said that they didn't have one in my size, they didn't have a very big stock because there was no longer much call for them. I looked at the thick ugly garment and was so relieved. We bought two new white vests with little pink bows at the neck instead. Phew.

Forgot to say - does anyone remember Liberty Bodices? I was forced to wear one for years and it wasn't until I was at secondary school that I was allowed to leave it off.

Lovely thread!!! I sometimes just go from page 1 to the last but this time i was rivetted!!!
I don't wear knickers under my nightie - in fact I don't wear knickers!!! Two operations in the "knicker elastic" area means that anything rubs on my scars. One benefit of this is that I never, ever, have a VPL [visible pantie line]. I always wear trousers too owing to scars on my legs so it just means a clean pair of trousers every day [or more often if necessary].
I've never even dreamed of wearing knickers under my nightie - not even in hospital - and never even thought about a fire!
Like one or two others, I would absolutely LOVE to have a bath ............... I used to lie there for hours topping the hot water up when necessary. As I live alone I wasn't interrupted!!! But arthritis in my knees put paid to that - I could get in but not out and I wouldn't want any fireman to get me out of the bath!!! Not a pretty sight.

I was given a roll on for my thirteenth birthday, I think I was under five stone and looked like a tent pole. The reasoning was that it prevented your tummy muscles from getting slack, in truth it was the exact opposite.

Incredible isn't it Alie ! I'm a wee bit older so I bought my own roll on, but like you had to broach the bra thing while I was still at school. I think she thought I didn't need one ! These days I'm thankful to be lightly endowed as not too much to travel south !

AlieOxon Fri 30-Oct-15 12:38:28

My mum was enlightened enough not to get me a roll-on, just two sets of bra and knickers, in the 50s. Mind you it took me a while to alert her to the fact that I needed a bra, since we didn't really talk about those things.
Embarrassing.
She used to get dressed under her nightie, for privacy!

Bellanonna Fri 30-Oct-15 12:25:10

Roll ons in the fifties Jess? Over of course. I mean, I imagine so. Not that I'd know wink

Drummerman Fri 30-Oct-15 12:06:53

Only on my head :-D

Ana Fri 30-Oct-15 11:25:45

I think my Granny struggled with the bra because as she'd never worn one her boobs actually did hang down to around her waist. It must have been tricky to hoik them up and into a bra while wearing a vest.

(Shell pink? More like salmon pink in my memory - vest, bloomers and corset all matching!)

JessM Fri 30-Oct-15 11:14:13

Well the vest went in the wash at the end of the week, obviously, Bellanonna smile
Yes, they were always a kind of shell pink weren't they. I think she had a new one every few years. I don't think other grandmother wore one.
And my mother wore a roll on in the 50s, which was a more washable affair but not sure whether under or over knickers.

Bellanonna Fri 30-Oct-15 08:33:53

You may have kept the bra clean, but what about the vest ? If I were to wear vests they would definitely go on after bra. I remember those huge corsets with suspenders ( my mother's I mean !).

JessM Fri 30-Oct-15 08:09:45

Nothing wrong with wearing bras on the top of vests. My Nan used to put on her vest and big knickers first and then her corset and bra on top. In this way you keep the corset and bra clean. I think corsets never did get washed. You only had one unless you were rather rich. They were made to fit by a company called Spirella I think.

I can cast caution to the wind and throw knickers, bra,and any other item of clothing and worry no tabout carried out in the nude by a hunky fireman, however having worn glasses all my life they are the first things on and last things off,I have trouble hearing when I dont have them on,and in case of fire would be the first thing I would grab,I want to see my hunky fireman, and hear him when he says to me DOWNTOEARTH you are the most ravishing 11.5 stone of grannyhood I have ever met run away with me ...grin

loopylou Fri 30-Oct-15 08:08:22

My mum used to wear her bra over her vest and wears her tights like Rubysong too. Trying to get her 'panty girdle' on when she was coming home from hospital was an experience in itself. She wouldn't countenance not wearing the damn thing!
Were I to be wearing a nightie (or hospital gown) in hospital then I would wear knickers.

Indinana Thu 29-Oct-15 22:35:56

Very true Bella, silly to feel embarrassed, but I did!

Bellanonna Thu 29-Oct-15 22:29:42

Nothing he hadn't seen before though, Indinana smile

Indinana Thu 29-Oct-15 22:09:29

I've worn my knicks in bed ever since the doc was called out to me in an emergency some years ago and, while he sat at my bedside, I very suddenly and urgently needed to get to the loo. It was only after I threw back the bedclothes that I realised my nightie had ridden up round my waist blush

Bellanonna Thu 29-Oct-15 21:57:36

This has been a really laugh aloud thread.

Ana Thu 29-Oct-15 21:21:51

Certainly not! Can't abide gin...thlshock

rosesarered Thu 29-Oct-15 21:14:07

Are We all awash with gin and tonic?

rosesarered Thu 29-Oct-15 21:09:38

This is a gloriously mad thread.grin

NanaRayna Thu 29-Oct-15 21:07:37

I cast off my knickers with the same glee as I fling away my bra at the end of the day; when comfort can finally be put before decorum!
wink

Ana Thu 29-Oct-15 20:52:05

It sounds crazy to me to wear them over tights! thlgrin

Lona, my lovely Granny was persuaded to buy her very first bra at the age of about 70 by my Auntie. She said she couldn't get on with it, and admitted eventually that she'd been trying to wear it over her vest...bless 'er smile

tanith Thu 29-Oct-15 20:49:22

of course I meant knickers over tights not the other way round.. sorry.
