Rehousing issue for Grenfell Towers survivors

I don't understand why many of the families are refusing the temporary housing they are being offered. One family was on TV saying how unhappy they were in their hotel but had turned down the offer of a flat. Of course they are still shocked and coming to terms with things but I would have thought it would be easier to move on in a place of your own rather than a hotel.

That's good news isn't it. There has to be culpability and I hope that knowing anyone charged and found guilty being justly dealt with will bring some peace to the victims of this terrible tragedy. Thanks for the link dj.

Yes, it is. At last the DPP has said that there might be prosecutions of individuals.
The buck must stop somewhere.

There has to be culpability if there is culpability......it will come out.
The local council should have addressed concerns by residents over things like piled up rubbish in stairwells and so on, but if as seems likely now, they find that the cladding was used by councils and others up and down the country and that it met with fire safety requirements at the time then I don't see anybody being prosecuted.
Testing being carried out now on cladding is much more stringent.

Staing the bleeding obvious in your first sentence , roses.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 15:50:07

Sorry, stating.

Some people are really sick.

You know, your posts could really do with a few 'socially aware' lessons durhamjen ......then you may find out how to talk to people without giving offence, it seems to be a failing of yours.

Sounds like you are all in agreement for once.

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 17:57:01

How can the DPP say what the sentence will be when 1. There has yet been no charges. 2. A jury would have to return a guilty verdict. 3. The judge will decide the punishment

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 18:00:33

If there will be charges over the cladding on the tower there every council must be charged for using the same cladding.

Even more problems in tower blocks in London.

A woman from the tower block was interviewed this morning, she complained they have fire wardens but they don't speak English

It took Mayhem a long time to see sense about this.

Angry scenes at this meeting.

A compilation of videos about Grenfell Tower and what is or is not happening.

There are some things that are intrinsically bad ideas. Residential tower blocks is one, Building a runway for Heathrow over the M25 is another.
The pressure on housing is horrendous and was one of the reasons for the Brexit vote.

durhamjen Fri 25-Aug-17 12:00:45

How does Brexit affect the pressure on housing?

I am sure I remember the government saying it would help with costs.

I hope this group is looked into in the enquiry.

They don't appear to have been doing their job.

Did anyone else know that Tesco was into housebuilding?

petra Thu 31-Aug-17 11:37:13

durhamjen
Yes, it was on channel 4 news last week.

The planning system is not fit for purpose any more. Developers buy up the sites, clear them, then sit on them for years while they wrangle with the local council about what they are allowed to build.
Once they receive planning permission they go back to the council to renegotiate so that they can reduce the social housing and affordable housing elements claiming that it's not financially viable. This might go on for ten years or even more. Meanwhile they have created an eyesore and have caused planning blight in the vicinity leading to run-down adjacent area, as nobody knows what is going to happen.
It costs the council hundreds of thousands in expensive planning appeals. In the end the council gives in. Or is forced to give in. This happens all the time round here (Gloucestershire) and everywhere else I guess.
Crazy system.
Surely there must be a better way of providing housing.

durhamjen Thu 31-Aug-17 15:15:32

What I noticed is that the developers say they will give the council various forms of planning gain, etc., for a reduction in the number of social housing units.
But they will not need the type of building they say they will give them if they do not have the social housing.
It's just a big con - as is Tesco pretending they are house builders.

durhamjen Thu 31-Aug-17 15:17:04

That's another thing, mostly harmless; the council cannot recoup the full cost of the appeals, so we are the ones who pay for the developers to challenge the councils.
That doesn't seem fair to me.
