Everyone I know has been having a go at me for daring to say this. But I can't cope with this weather much longer. It is relentless and although we have fans the heat has built up over the last weeks to the point where they are just blowing hot air around. I can't sleep and I am sweaty all the time and I am praying for rain

Jools1953 Sun 22-Jul-18 12:27:29

I really don't like it when the temperature climbs over 24C. I'm perfectly happy up to that, but then I just can't bear it! I have taken to sleeping with the fan on all night, which is actually quite a soothing noise, and it drowns out the sound of my snoring, lol. grin

MissAdventure Sun 22-Jul-18 12:28:00

But given the title, you are under no obligation to read this thread.

Nannan2 Sun 22-Jul-18 12:30:35

Maybe a move to cheshire then miss adventure?where its drizzling?wink

Wendy Sun 22-Jul-18 12:31:34

I am finding it too hot. I prefer cooler weather. I always think you can put more on to keep warm but there is only so much you can take off !!

MissAdventure Sun 22-Jul-18 12:31:46

Yes, it would be nice to be able to move.
Unfortunately I'm not in a position to, for various reasons.
I think I'd be better off in Iceland!

Nannan2 Sun 22-Jul-18 12:39:53

All those who dont like the heat and cannot move somewhere colder- please buy a overhead fan like the previous poster who found it a great help- and make cold drinks, eat salads, wear 100% cotton and leave the sun lovers in peace as weathers on the change already (as kids schools have broken up for hols) and im sure it wont be long till our 'normal' rotten depressing british weather will be resumed.(and note to water companies- its a bit late to give hosepipe ban- bit like locking stable door etc etc..)grin

Nannan2 Sun 22-Jul-18 12:41:12

Ooh! Those cold sprays you can buy are good too.boots do their own one for 2.99!

MissAdventure Sun 22-Jul-18 12:42:59

We are leaving you in peace. You don't have to read any comments here, and I'm sure they make no difference to your enjoyment of the weather.
Opinions vary, that's all.

Anniebach Sun 22-Jul-18 12:45:13

Not everyone can afford an overhead fan and I think we have the sense to drink cold drinks etc

Perhaps sunlovers should leave us to chat about our dislike of very hot weather , O/P ? And have a ‘ I love this heat ‘ thread ?

Jaycee5 Sun 22-Jul-18 12:54:19

Nannan2 You accuse us of moaning (even though most of us have freely admitted that that is what we are doing) but aren't you here moaning about us moaning? We can't do much about the heat - but you can do something about reading a thread that clearly irritates you and that you were aware would from the beginning.
I am not quite clear what you are getting from this interaction.

muddynails Sun 22-Jul-18 13:25:16

Think how much you are saving on heating the water as it isn't freezing cold to start off with, and those chilly evenings when the heating has to go on,
battling down the road against the wind and rain, looking out the window yet again with rain beating against the panes making you feel thoroughly miserable,
wishing there could be some dry weather for a change, now there are pleasant warm evenings where we are able to sit outside chatting, into the late hours,
could go on, hope this weather does.

MissAdventure Sun 22-Jul-18 13:35:55

Those times don't make me thoroughly miserable though. This weather does!

Marieeliz Sun 22-Jul-18 13:41:36

The NW is a bit cooler today because it is cloudy but we have hot weather since late April when my relations came over from Canada. It has been 30's on some days. Grass is now straw and my bedding plants are dead. I am on a water meter. We have had about 1.1/2 days of rain in all those weeks. So it is not only the South of the country, we are suffering here also.

Ellie Anne Sun 22-Jul-18 13:46:26

Being in Scotland we have not had it quite so hot but I was loving the heatwave. It was great to be out in the sun and the grass will recover. Now we are back to cool grey weather though very little rain and my mood has fallen with the temperature. I dread winter.

sharon103 Sun 22-Jul-18 14:00:03

I can't wait until this heatwave ends. According to the weather forecast the week after next should be down to the lower 20's but still no rain. Here in Northamptonshire it has been and still is so hot and humid for too long. I just wish for a lovely cool breeze to get some energy back and get on with jobs I had planned to do. Just a lick and a spit lately!

Daisyboots Sun 22-Jul-18 14:03:25

Oh dear my previous post seems to have disappeared into the ether.
I am loving the lower temperatures in Portugal we are enjoying while the UK has our hot weather. Only downside is it is usually more humid in the UK than here. Our weather forecasts are giving an unsettled summer with lower temperatues than usual so looks like the UK will continue to have high temperatures over the next month. Plenty of moaning about the weather here but in reverse. But not from me.

Worthingpatchworker Sun 22-Jul-18 14:10:59

A cold wet flannel on the back of the neck is soothing. Also ccasionally wiping limbs with it can soothe or get a water spray and spritz yourself.

I sympathise with anyone going through the menopause in this heat.....I think if I'd had to nudge that I would have slept in a cool bath.

grannypauline Sun 22-Jul-18 14:35:19

For the record: my late cousin loved the heat. She was at her happiest on a visit to Luxor - temp 40+. My sister loves the heat too. I don't. I get heatstroke and dehydrated fairly quickly so hot is not ideal for me. We are all different. So some of us can rejoice while others declare discomfort and take advice on how to cope.

As regards some of the comments: itchy skin is possibly a minor infection. I use witch hazel as first response and if that doesn't work, a fungicidal.

Lots of good advice here and I will add: place half a small bottle of water in the freezer and another small bottle in the fridge. When frozen top the half bottle up with the cold water. It will stay cold for hours.

Also, keep all windows and curtain drawn shut until the temperature outside drops below that inside. Close when opposite.

pollyperkins Sun 22-Jul-18 14:52:14

You don't need to buy an overhead fan. We have two small portable ones (not expensive) which get moved from room to room as required. Makes a lot of difference. Stored in wardrobe for most of the year!

Esspee Sun 22-Jul-18 14:52:46

I have been amazed at how badly my neighbours deal with the heat.
We have the windows and doors open when the outside temperature is cooler than inside, and closed with blinds and curtains drawn when it is hotter outside.
Neighbours have their windows open in the heat of the day. Our Hive system has emailed us saying that the temperature in our home is degrees cooler than other homes in our area. (In the winter we are always a couple of degrees warmer than neighbours.

MissAdventure Sun 22-Jul-18 15:01:13

I have to say, every suggestion given has been put into practice for a good few years now.
They help with the overwhelming heat, but I still can't wait for it to end!
P.S apart from the hot water bottle suggestion, which I did last night. Lovely!

Fennel Sun 22-Jul-18 15:13:09

The main thing is to keep well hydrated. ie drink water regularly, not huge amounts at once, but regularly.

Brigidsdaughter Sun 22-Jul-18 15:13:58

I've had more than enough. I love to see the sun and normally take 20 mins without Sun team to boost my Vit D but can't take this humidity so not getting it much. Trying to remind myself of long winter waiting for it though. I have Hashimoto's and am 2/3 degrees out from norm. Hot most of time...

HillyN Sun 22-Jul-18 15:17:45

I hated hot weather when I was teaching but loved it in the holidays and am really enjoying it since I retired. However I do feel sorry for those people whose health is affected badly by it.
I am surprised that more sufferers don't have air coolers or a portable air-con unit if it makes them feel so ill. I know they are expensive but we picked up a second-hand air-con unit for £80 to take down to S.E. France in the summer and our fan unit has a drawer at the bottom for ice. Both worked well when it was HOT there, i.e. touching 40 degrees, last summer.
For many years we have had a ceiling fan above our bed at home which has enabled us to sleep well in this hot weather. I don't think it was very expensive.
I have a condition called hyperhidrosis which means I sweat excessively all the time so being wringing with sweat doesn't bother me particularly- it's the norm. On the other hand I have also had a thyroidectomy so I feel the cold terribly and hibernate under the duvet in winter!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 22-Jul-18 15:25:20

Hate, hate, hate the heat. It makes me feel so tired and sluggish. I can't be bothered to do any housework so do just the minimum early mornings, then laze about. If it rains I think I'll go out and dance in it.
