AIBU - putting dishclothes into the dishwasher

This is completely off the subject but all the talk of sterilising cloths reminded me of the time I had an issue with a face cloth. I use muslin cloth to wipe off my make up. I woke early one morning and pushed open the bathroom door to find my naked husband standing by the sink with my muslin cloth in hand full of soap washing his bum.

I'm afraid I put the cats' bowls in the dishwasher as well! Can't see the problem. The vegetable brush goes in as well, as do flower vases.

Doesn’t anyone use disposable dishcloths, I buy a roll of j cloth( cheaper version) from a bargain shop and dispose of it daily, it’s a sort of breakable paper so doesn’t harm the environment I also use one of those sponges with a scourer on it daily which are also cheap and disposable.

dunno why I clicked on this one. Dishwashers are such pointless, time wasting, energy wasting pointless kitchen items. I've never owned one.

I have never owned a dishwasher, and don’t want one. Dishes are washed, then left to air dry. Dishcloths are washed out in hot soapy water, then left to dry spread over the dish drainer. Everything, including towels, is washed at 30 degrees.
I don’t understand why people feel the need to boil, bleach or
sterilise everything.
I was a little fussier when my children were small, but after six months, when they start crawling around, I never saw the point of it. All five are extremely healthy.
At the age of 80 I can honestly say that I never get ill, apart from a cold maybe once or twice a year. My immune system is obviously excellent, probably because of what a lot of you would call ‘bad hygiene’

Bowl not bowm the wash with bio detergent but convinced the microwave is better.

Learned about the dishwasher trick a few years ago but don't use it. I usually microwave for a couple of minutes. Boy are they hot when they are finished. Otherwise a little bleach with water in a washing up bown

I'm the dishwasher in our house. The cat bowls go in the bowl last then rinsed under the tap.

I put mine in a white wash.

I put the dish clothes on a hot wash in the washing machine but put the washing up brushes in the dish washer

I don't have a dishwasher...

My friend puts the cats’ dishes in with the human dishes. Yuk!!! To me that’s as bad as putting a toilet brush in.

Dishcloths are probably the most germ ridden thing in a kitchen. Most dishwasher settings are NOT hot enough sterilise them and as they are not agitated they will not even be washed properly. If you are worried about hygiene use Milton or over baby bottle steriliser to soak the cloths.

No not extreme at all. I keep a little bucket and put used face cloths and all
Sort of white bits and bobs in a little Milton, then like you put in a quick wash n spin when my bucket is full ( 2-3 days usually)

Thanks for this thread Hurdy Gurdy ! I picked up a lot of great tips for cleaning which tbh I’m a bit hopeless at. I chuck my dish clothes in the washing machine at 95 but a bit of bleach would be more eco and economical. ?

You'd put them above the rotor arm or well away from it though?
My dishwasher has a kind of lift-up shelf (with holes in, of course) above where the cups go. Usually I would put long utensils or knives there.

I just use J-cloths and chuck 'em. But if you're the sort who uses dish cloths, it seems reasonable to clean them in the dishwasher, surely? Though I'd imagine they'd need to be in something otherwise wouldn't there be a risk they'd wrap themselves round the rotor arm?

I live alone an have not had a dishwasher since my husband died. He always did the dishes! So no need for a machine.
I just put the dishcloth and green scouring pad in bleach overnight.
When I was a child washing up was done in hot soda water. All we had for cleaning was a bar of Sunlight soap and tub of Vim.
Everyone is obsessed with hygiene nowadays so much so that they have no immunity.

Another here who can’t be doing with revolting toilet brushes, I only use cleaning products and bleach ( not together) i I see the need.

I can remember buying a galvanised bucket to boil the nappies in, that was in 1976 when we went on stand-pipes because it didn't rain all summer!

I’m with you on that. I used to boil the pail on the stove for an hour or so and then just put the cloths in the machine to rinse and spin, but my OH thought it caused a problem with the gas hob! (It didn’t , but for a quiet life I now put them on a hot wash)

HurdyGurdy......I just read your post to my DH. He gave your DH a resounding thumbs up! Says he will do the same next time I ask him to load the dishwasher......

I too used to put bits and stirrup irons in dishwasher. Not at the time as other stuff though! Numnahs and some horse rugs used to fit in washing machine but then was left with sludge and horse hair everywhere which really was not nice.
