Bad language

Nowadays I have to watch this sort of programme with another person because I keep having to ask , ‘ What did he say ? ‘ and even when I do hear it I stop the recording and ask the other half if he understands the same as me. Sometimes - often - neither of us understands ! But having watched the first episode twice it became much clearer. Maybe this is the answer .

Well after saying I enjoyed it, I really thought it showed promise how wrong can I be, episode two had me so confused that I lost the plot I actually thought I must have nodded off as it made so little sense to me, however I didn’t think I had nodded off but presumed I must have, and then my daughter texted me, asked if I was watching and said she understand it When I went to work today I asked my colleague she hadn’t a clue either so when I spoke to my close friend on the phone tonight, knowing we usually watch the same things I asked her, she said she gave up as she didn’t ‘get it’

I did give it another shot and this time I didn’t do anything else so I could follow the plot. I thought it was really good and the bad language was only by that detective who called it ‘craic’ . ( is that how you spell it ? ) I still found him abnoxious and I like to think the police are more ‘professional’ for want of a better word but I might be naive.

I gave up watching Peaky Blinders because of their use of the "f" word - not so much because it was swearing, but because it wasn't the swear word of choice in those days - men, and it was mostly men, used " b....r" and "bl...y". I worked in a male environment and most men didn't swear in front of women.

Bad language and the evil use of words are part of ACTIONS - war, child abuse, animal cruelty, famine, poverty, the list is endless.. You cannot separate them.

I rarely watch television, only when I am ill or doing the ironing

I just wish I knew what the flip it is all about. Too confusing.

I admit I didn't notice any swearing but I did read the book a year or more ago.
To me the part you have quoted expresses frustration and anger. I am not offended.
I just do not want to be sworn at.

I remember being shocked at the start of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” as it was all f f f . That was about 1993, and it was considered hilarious. I must be a prude I know, but still don’t like to hear it.

I'm more bothered about what people do , than bad language

'Obscene' words from an old lady would upset more people than same words from a 'builder' . It's funny as I am what is generally called an atheist but I feel taken aback by blasphemy, although the French have been saying it forever. Excreta doesn't bother me although I inhibit my exclamations in polite company.

glad i dont have tv .but even dvds that i watch. i read the intro think ahh that sounds good .what the the first words in the first sentence the f word twice, and a b*******d in the next scene. although it sounded a good story .no way was i going to listen to the rest ,quite spoilt my evening in..there is no need to swear.

I quite enjoyed the programme.

If you want to watch a drama that displays a degree of accuracy then I think you have to expect a level of accuracy in looking at the behaviours and language of those depicted and having worked in criminal justice for many year's, that language is heard every day!

I’ve never read one of her books, but have ordered one today

Remember when the Sex Pistols shocked us all by using the F word on TV for the first time with Bill Grundy? It made headlines! It's been downhill ever since. We never used to have bad language on TV so why is it necessary now? I was brought up in a non-swearing home so I’m not comfortable with gratuitous bad language, although there are some exceptions. ‘This Country’ is one where I’m prepared to laugh it off because the characters are supposed to make you cringe!

Love the programme, but must admit I find it a bit confusing at times but look forward to the next bit.

There’s lots of swearing in the books! Including this example twenty odd pages into the first one.

“In a month’s time,” he said, enunciating clearly for me, “the f***ing government is going to bulldoze this whole site and build a f***ing motorway over it. They graciously agreed to leave a f***ing traffic island for the keep, so they can w**k off about how much they’ve done to preserve our heritage.”

I just don’t like it, I work with a lot of tradespeople, so it’s certainly not like I don’t hear it, and people think nothing of giving you a mouthful of obscenities over the phone, I have a colleague who deletes any email containing bad language, he doesn’t see why he should have to reply to it, and I agree!

Mostly it washes over me, apart from the word that would probably upset most people, as I massively resent being reduced to my sexual parts. I also think we can tell a lot about the position of women in our society when a word for women's sexual parts is considered to be the worst thing one can call someone.

Other than that, the word I dislike most is probably 'sh**'. It's just so lazy. 'It was sh**.' What does that mean? 'It was a bit of excrement', 'it wasn't very good', 'it was dreadful', 'I didn't like the look of it', 'I didn't have a good time' etc etc

On TV, or in a book, if that turn of phrase suits a character, then fine. But in real life, it makes me a bit judgey, I'm afraid.

I am only just beginning to realise, and regret, that quite respectable, intelligent women can and do use obscenities in every day conversation.

Speaking to some smart, well-educated and well-regarded university lecturers this last week, almost all effed and blinded in a way that appalled me.

It's probably the fact that they hear it on TV which has made it 'normal'.
I don't think it will ever be normal to me. There is, after all, a good reason why it is called 'foul language'.

My Mum, god bless her, used to say, 'If you wouldn't use that language in front of the Queen, don't use it in front of me.' !!

This was to my sister who was always a 'potty mouth'.

I refrained from pointing out that Princess Margaret was well known for her bad language.

I was finishing off my knitting so I didn’t realise the inspector scene was a flashback until the OH enlightened me. That’s after we had a mini row ( as opposed to our proper ones ) about how I ought to be more broadminded . (I’d like to say that afterwards we had great sex like they do in the movies but ...) The flashback does explain things a bit. I don’t object to swearing per se . (I have been known....... )
I agree with the others who say that there isn’t this same language in the books . I might give the episode another shot when my eyes grow tired of the subtitles in Spiral .

I thoroughly enjoyed it and must admit I didn't particularly notice the bad language, but then it is used a lot more freely these days. As you said, you didn't have to watch it, you did what was best for you and that's fine, but if TV is meant to be displaying life as it is then I think we have to get used to bad language being used, just as it is in much of the real world.

I was a bit surprised by the conduct of the (was it inspector?) in the office but hadn't realised at first it’s set in 2006. I think in 2019 things have changed a lot and that behaviour would be deemed totally unacceptable.

Nah. Most of the rudest most unpleasant people I have ever met were sticklers for grammar and "manners".

Have met some brilliant swearey people.

Think there is an inverse relationship between the two
