Well deserved IMO, we need more & more people to get on board with this.

I for one am not as aware & as active as I should be with regard to what I buy & what I throw away , recycle etc ,etc

Listening to her speeches & efforts helps me to remind me that I could to do better.

Utterly ridiculous. Having heard her at an unscripted interview she is almost totally clueless. She is being used by her handlers to push the fake climate crisis. Climate is governed by our position around the Sun and will never be prevented by Man. The Late David Bellamy had it right.

In conjunction with this thread I was thinking about the world's most powerful international women .... Angela Merkel (degree in Physics, Leipzig and Berlin), Maggie Thatcher (degree in Chemistry, Oxford), Christine Lagarde, degree in Law (Paris) ... and it occurred to me that it wasn't until these women had gained outstanding qualifications, mental maturity, worldly knowledge and awareness etc. that they were able to change the world, (for better or worse.) Maybe we should allow GT more time to prove herself before we praise her to the skies or attack her very being.
Don't be amazed at what she is achieving now at 16, let's look at her in 15 years time and then be impressed or disappointed.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:56:40

No! I am happy to "praise her to the skies" right now.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:59:29

Leyburn you can't expect her to be completely au fait with the science. Not at this stage in her schooling. What she is doing is calling attention to the science, and raising awareness.

The rest of your post is hogwash.

Just what IS it about climate change that always invokes such anger towards those who might question how much of a part humans have played in its development?

The response is always the same.

If we understand that change has happened many times over many thousands of years, isn’t it logical to be sceptical about how large a part we have played in its development this time?

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 17:10:30

No.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 17:11:22

Go to any city centre in the rush hour.

Good onegrin

What about the young Dutch lad who has developed a way of clearing plastic from the sea. It is easy to point out what is wrong a lot harder to find a solution. No one seems to speak about him.

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 17:20:32

Yes, we spoke about him earlier in the thread and GrannyGravy posted something about him Keeper

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 17:23:58

Well, he might save some sea-life but he won't save the planet.

He is, of course, admirable.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 17:25:46

You can, of course, get GretaT's* books on kindle.

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 17:35:53

The oceans are warming. Fact.

The oceans are polluted with plastic which are oil based.
Creating plastic produces greenhouse gases
Incinerating waste plastic produces greenhouse gases
Sunlight on plastic polluting the oceans produces greenhouse gases as the plastic breaks down

This all creates heat which breaks down the plastic more quickly creating a vicious circle.

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 17:38:07

Surely saving sea life is of vital importance.
We shouldn't just be concerned about ourselves, more and more species are becoming extinct every year.

It's not just about humans.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 17:52:20

Yeah, but maybe not as vital as saving people? (Think floods and fires)

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 17:56:54

Leyburn - another “scientist”. What an expert lot you are. Greta’s appeal is that she highlights the science, she does not make it her opinion. All power to her stirring things up. If she does nothing else for the rest of her life she has been a catalyst and a force for good.

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 17:58:05

hmm
If we're causing all this we should be concerned about the animal world who are at our mercy.

Yes, I was right next to some of the fires

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 18:01:29

People are more important. That's my stance. But we can try to look after both! smile

Phloembundle Thu 12-Dec-19 18:26:32

The aim has been achieved regardless of anyone's suspicions about her, because more people are talking about climate change.

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 18:31:40

Phloembundle (that is quite a handle!) you are so right!

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 18:51:52

marjgran, no you don`t know my qualifications. Would geophysics and oceanography do?

ExperiencedNotOld Thu 12-Dec-19 18:54:12

I feel pity for the child. Pushed out seemingly as the puppet of others, without any apparent chaperone or mentor. It’ll end badly, I fear, with a mental health crisis.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 18:57:43

marjgran, time for some teaching from a scientist perhaps? would you like to know a bit about maunder minimum and sunspots?

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 19:02:26

There are a very very very few dissenting scientists but the overwhelming majority see human activity as causing or exacerbating climate change.

Bridgeit Thu 12-Dec-19 19:04:28

She would be more likely to suffer & be stressed if she could not pursue her passion.
