Eating at the cinema

I was at the cinema last night and the young man beside me was eating crisps non stop for the first hour or so. The smell was awful not to mention the noise.

I've no objection to people quietly eating some sweets or chocolate or whatever but aibu to find this constant munching and guzzling and bringing in smelly nachos, hot dogs etc really annoying.

He and his girlfriend had bought the crisps somewhere outside the cinema and brought them in in their rucksack as they don't sell crisps at the ticket desk.

Newer cinema seats dont just jave cupholders but also built in side trays for your food.

They are literally made for eating.

We have one small cinema that doesnt offer much food and snacks. It is not financially viable on ticket sales alone, it gets by on heritage grants and charity status.

In normal cinemas: no snackers = no cinema!

So youre welcome!

Eating is part of the enjoyment, for me.
I try not to rustle or slurp though.

Beswitched Sun 09-Feb-20 18:52:33

Sorry, well not we'll.

Beswitched Sun 09-Feb-20 18:51:55

To all the people say 'move seats', seating is assigned in m y cinema.

And the attitude that the cinema makesits of money out of me buying buckets of popcorn and trays of nachos so me and my family are just going to make ourselves comfy and to hell with anyone who actually wants to watch the film, we'll 'ignorant' is the first word that springs to mind.

Nah a meal out is more formal. Different kinda evening.

Cinema is half way between going out and staying in. And cinemas ARE for eating in these days, they dont offer all those food and drink options for people to not buy and enjoy them!

Maybe they should show films in restaurants then notanan2 they are for eating and cinemas for watching films.

Just voicing our opinions Christingle as are you.

MawB Sun 09-Feb-20 18:07:10

I like the Errol Flynn Filmhouse at Northampton where I usually settle back with a glass of Merlot!

Christingle Sun 09-Feb-20 17:56:41

What a lot of moaners! Move seats if it’s that bad or just live and let live. Your all showing your age!

Because we go there TO eat Ethel

I think probably food at the cinema should be banned when the film is on. Unless it's a children's film. Fair enough before the film starts or during the adverts. It drives my husband crazy when people eat during the film though. Me less so but his stress about it rubs off on me. And to be fair it is very annoying to hear rustling sweet wrappers and munching. I'm not sure why people have an urge to eat to be honest most films are only a couple of hours they won't starve if they wait!

I am not expecting 1917 to do that well at the Oscars tonight. It's a British made film with a totally British story and Hollywood usually looks after it's own.

Anyway, we certainly will not be watching as neither of us can stand the all the red carpet creeping, totally false tears, political speeches and long everlasting lists thanking Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

Patsy70 Sun 09-Feb-20 17:13:57

We enjoy going to the cinema when there are good films showing, but only in the Winter or if the weather is bad, as I hate being indoors if it's warm and sunny. I get so annoyed if someone is rustling constantly whilst eating crisps, sweets etc. or talking/fidgeting so that the back of my seat is knocked. We choose to sit in the back seats wink so there is no-one behind to irritate us (we're not really miserable old b.....s!)

glammagran Sun 09-Feb-20 17:12:27

I haven’t been to a cinema for about 10 years now for all the reasons others have said. I really disagree with the comments made by Maxblank. No, I did not behave like that when I was young (70’s) and I fail to see what household income has to do with decent manners.

Greeneyedgirl Sun 09-Feb-20 17:06:36

Another thing "seniors" have been spotted doing is unwrapping sweets with crackly wrappers, and as others have said, constantly chattering.
Youngsters eat smelly food and can't leave phones alone.........perhaps we should all be barred!
Am I the only one not to rave about 1917? Think there are other better films, but blockbusters always win the Oscars.

Greciangirl Sun 09-Feb-20 16:27:46

I usually wait to see films when they come around on the Senior Screen mornings.
Usually, we are all seniors and I have never experienced anyone behaving badly or eating noisily.
Also, it’s cheaper. £3 with free tea or coffee.
Well worth the wait.

I think 1917 really deserves a big screen. We wish we’d opted to see it at the IMAX. I jumped out of my seat twice, much to DH’s amusement - I don’t think I’d have been so engrossed in my own front room.

It’ll be interesting to see what wins at the Oscars tonight. I’d pick 1917, but thought Joker was brilliant (and very unsettling).

pengwen Sun 09-Feb-20 16:15:19

Once we were the only people watching a film, no noise, inconsiderate people or smelly food!
Good film too.

Greeneyedgirl Sun 09-Feb-20 16:02:20

Eating in the cinema is one of my pet hates too and our local "popcorn palace" sells so much junk food you'd think it was a fast food restaurant. I love going to see a film with friends and discussing it in the pub afterwards, but the smells and sounds of eating puts me off.

We have an alternative small converted film house with cafe and you can take wine in to the film. This isn't without its problems as (predominantly older) people take in a big glass of wine, fall asleep, and snore through remainder of film. Seriously, it happens grin

sarahellenwhitney Sun 09-Feb-20 16:01:09

TerriBull
I imagine you were not too popular. I certainly wouldn't have been sitting in front of not one but two 'scrunching ' away at your shared bag of Maltesers.
At least have the courtesy to suck grin not scrunch.
Myself quite partial to sucking a maltezer.

curvygran950 Sun 09-Feb-20 15:44:54

1917 absolutely worth seeing on a bigger screen than a home tv . Nobody in the audience at our small arts centre talked, ate or drank through the showing . And we were a very varied mix of ages, not only old ‘fuddy duddies’ .

AGAA4 Sun 09-Feb-20 15:36:54

Had a similar experience Dilly with a woman in the row behind joining in the songs and it was a live performance and she was badly off key! After several glares from others she kept quiet.

DillytheGardener Sun 09-Feb-20 15:24:10

I went to see Motown and the elderly couple next to DH and I sang through the whole the whole thing. Drove me nuts, I was seething. I paid to see the performers sing not the out of tune seat neighbours warblings.

Oopsminty Sun 09-Feb-20 15:23:02

I'm going to wait for the DVD to be released in future, my daughter said 1917 was fantastic.

April 2020

Not long to wait at all

Definitely a film worth watching

Grandad1943 Sun 09-Feb-20 15:14:28

It could be a long while before the film 1917 is released on DVD I believe Shandy57. When it does eventually end screening in the cinemas all the streaming services such as Netflix, Google Play Movies, Now TV and Amazon Video will be competing to have it to rent or buy on their home channels.

Not until it's run its time on those services will it be released on DVD in all probability.
