Any words or phrases that you can't stand?

An early phrase that I loathe is "can I get" but a more recent one is the word curate which is used in place of collect, or select etc. Recent examples:

The Guardian" the BBC's failure to curate some news event responsibly"

A description of someone's collection of china pig money boxes (once given away free) as being "carefully curated"

A delicatessen which provides "a perfectly curated picnic"

To my mind the misuse of the word devalues the work of museum and gallery curators.

I agree with most of these, especially the use of myself instead of me and 'fed up of'. Most irritating lately is the verbalisation of nouns, used so frequently in tv adverts now.

Back in the day drives me mad!

"the present moment". "Hun". "Furbaby" and "Furchildren". "Turned round and said" "She went" (instead of "she said") and - oh yes, people saying or writing "a chest of draws" instead of drawers.

Most of the above. Most recently, “bad boys” referring to items of food. People using “I” rather than “me” - e.g. “He said to my husband and I” etc.

I love 'the elephant in the room' jaylucy. It's so apt, as long as it's used correctly and not overused.

Phloembundle Tue 11-Feb-20 10:29:17

I'm fed up with fed up of.

NotSpaghetti Tue 11-Feb-20 10:27:46

Naty, are you in The US?

I also hate DH, DS, DGD etc.
... and (usually on the phone) ”bear me a minute”
... and “can you confirm your address” - ?? ?

Ahead of instead of saying before. Why not just say before? It annoys me every time I hear it. BBC reporters use it a lot.

maddyone Tue 11-Feb-20 10:24:15

He/she was sat.......nooo, it’s he/she was sitting. Drives me mad!

jaylucy Tue 11-Feb-20 10:19:43

pce612 Tue 11-Feb-20 10:17:50

'See you later' from checkout operators etc that I don't know.

Olive53 Tue 11-Feb-20 10:17:42

Saying Hey instead of Hello, happens all the time now on TV. And starting every sentence with so..............

polnan Tue 11-Feb-20 10:17:34

the only words that I can`t stand are the words I don`t understand what is meant!grin

lizzypopbottle Tue 11-Feb-20 10:15:26

Suddenly we have 'people that'. It's people who and things that!
Yes, 'can I get?' is seriously irritating. I've heard that occasionally the person who is being asked replies along the lines of, 'Customers aren't allowed in the kitchen but don't worry. I'll get it for you!' Even if that's an urban myth, it's a good one!

I try always to order with, 'I'd like...' ?

Phoebes Tue 11-Feb-20 10:11:02

Never heard: ”my bad” - what does it mean?
As a language teacher, there are many turns of phrase which I really can’t stand. For example:
Starting a sentence with “so”
Hubby
The wife
You guys
Could of, should of, would of
Aah bless - we took the cat to the vets once and every other word was “Aaah bless!”
Myself and yourself in the wrong context
Pronouncing H as haitch.
I could go on for ever........

CrazyGranny60 Tue 11-Feb-20 10:08:28

At the end of the day....winds me up something rotten! I always but in and say, "It's night".

Nortsat46 Tue 11-Feb-20 09:59:47

I had forgotten about ‘my bad’, which is a ludicrous phrase and seems to be creeping into television dramas!

quizqueen Tue 11-Feb-20 09:58:17

'bin' instead of 'been'
'gonna' instead of 'going to'

Patsytaylor Tue 11-Feb-20 09:52:57

Absolutely!
Ahh bless

sue01 Tue 11-Feb-20 09:50:19

Wrap up warm. Aaaargh... even the BBC say it now !
It's an adverb !!!!

And this hideous new habit of starting every reply with ..so.

Hun... is ghastly too !

shysal Tue 11-Feb-20 09:36:22

Most of the above.
The proof is in the pudding (should be the proof of the pudding is in the eating).
Pronouncing an H which should be silent.
I have just woke up.
I text him. (surely should be texted).
Being 'woke' as in aware.
