Vanity (personalised) license plates

Following on from the prat tabs/designer labels thread.

IMO' vanity license plates are the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!'

They make me shudder.

They're definitely not a waste of money mine cost £250 which wasn't a lot and is now worth over 2k sounds like a sensible investment to me. Plus it's really easy to remember one letter one number and 3 letters and it makes people smile and chat to me, so where's the harm?

Kalu Thu 20-Feb-20 15:06:55

annepl. Why should anyone ever have to justify to you or others whatever they decide to purchase.

Obviously the reasons are a personal choice and up to each individual.

I have never understood why others get so het up and spout their disapproval so rudely should anyone mention what they have purchased......It’s NOT your money and none of your business.

Marydoll, I was trying to inject some humour into this thread. You most certainly don’t fit the profile of a hedonist. ?

annep1 Thu 20-Feb-20 14:39:56

My sons 4 family members all have matching number plates. I know it's up to the individual but we are being asked what we think.
Personally why would you get excited over having one. I don't get it at all. Its only a number plate. How does it add to your life/happiness?

F10NA plus extra letters was an awful driver the other day ?

Marydoll Thu 20-Feb-20 11:30:30

It's a bit of a show off thing, attention seeking

etheltbags1, you know nothing about my motives nor anyone else's either, so why make such an unpleasant judgement.

Also, I don't care if the general public know what it means, it means something to ME, as I have said before, it's no-one else's business how I spend MY money.

curvygran950 Thu 20-Feb-20 11:10:07

Couldn’t have put it better myself,GracesGran .
A bit more tolerance and goodwill goes a long way and is sadly in short supply .

Do you not realise how incredibly judgemental and intolerant this sort of post comes over? Why are people of this mindset? What, in their life experience, made them believe they were better than other people? Please, someone, explain.

etheltbags1 Wed 19-Feb-20 22:32:20

I don't know what the fuss is about. It's a bit of a show off thing, attention seeking but it doesn't bother me.

Flygirl Wed 19-Feb-20 22:23:12

I always think that most personalised plates are a bit of a waste of money, as most are obscure. Only the driver/family/friends know their relevance/what they stand for, so it's meaning is actually lost on the wider public.

In the late 70s, my husband bought a fresh, not new, car, and when I saw it, I said "that number plate was made for us!" It was DSC 869 L. DS were his initials, the C stood for car, and the L was my initial.

I love personal plates and the little bit of individuality they add to vehicles . They frequently make me smile as there are plenty where I live .

They can also be a good investment .

GracesGranMK3 - Agree with all you say !

Kalu Wed 19-Feb-20 20:35:23

Oh you know you want to GrannyGravy? and why not if this is something which would please you both? And, a snap to boot?

Kalu Wed 19-Feb-20 20:32:18

Oh I thought you were a dead cert the minute I saw you Marydoll. It takes one to know one ? but something we can muse over when you pop in for cocktails in my drawing room.

GracesGranMK3 it is indeed a strange mindset. I have no idea why such people feel this need.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-Feb-20 20:23:02

GGMK3 totally agree with your post......I can be cantankerous at times, hence I have just been looking on the internet and found number plates for GrandpaGravy and myself for under £500 for both. I am tempted............

Mamma66 Wed 19-Feb-20 20:20:42

Ooh sorry, who made you the arbiter of good taste? I have one, it’s my initials and year of birth, I had hung my nose over it but couldn’t justify it and then was delighted when he bought it for me as a gift. I am not a social climber and what’s the difference between buying a private registration plate or designer handbag? I think it’s a bit mean to be so ‘sniffy’ about it. What’s wrong with ‘live and let live’?

Marydoll Wed 19-Feb-20 20:15:57

You would never know by looking at me Kalu, would you? wink

GracesGranMK3, summed it up perfectly!

Kalu Wed 19-Feb-20 20:15:13

Huge question mark amiss ?

Kalu Wed 19-Feb-20 20:13:55

Who knew some Gnetters were secret hedonists.

I’m shocked I tell you, shocked ???

GracesGranMK3 Wed 19-Feb-20 20:12:20

FlexibleFriend I have a feeling there are just some people in this world who enjoy offending others with their gross generalisations and a few of them come on here. I have no idea why they do it. If they are like are like that in real heaven help their friends and family. I know it's a simple fact of life that we all have opinions but do they have to be given voice when it's simply to take a swipe at a group of people the don't know, who are spending their own money in the way they choose and for motives they have absolutely no reason or need to share with us. Is it insecurity, inverted snobbery or what? One of the problems of the internet is we can read what people say but we have no way of knowing their motive for saying it.

curvygran950 Wed 19-Feb-20 20:03:16

Lovely post , annifrance !

JuliaM Wed 19-Feb-20 19:57:57

I would never have a car with personalised number plates by choice, and turned the offer down when my elderly Dad offered to buy me one for my 50th Birthday, l could think of plenty of other things that would be far more useful to me than one of those!
My late step mother had private number plates on her little old car, her initials where very similar to Soft Butter Stork Margarine, needless to say she got a bit of ridicule and teasing from those who spotted it!

annifrance Wed 19-Feb-20 19:48:45

Some years ago we had a little rescue dog called Hugo. Soon after my husband bought a new van, it's numberplate was HGO. He was the only dog in the village with his own personalised numberplate.

Tangerine Wed 19-Feb-20 19:35:35

I think it's up to the individual.

Personalised number plates aren't something I crave but I know people who love them.

grannyJillyT Wed 19-Feb-20 19:29:17

My late husband bought mine for me for a valentines gift, he’s dead but I’ve still got the number plates to remind me of him smile
