Vanity (personalised) license plates

Following on from the prat tabs/designer labels thread.

IMO' vanity license plates are the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!'

They make me shudder.

I wouldn't buy one myself and in any case my surname begins with a letter which is not normally found on number plates. I know someone who likes quilting and part of hers reads SEW which is all right.
I had to make an anagram of mine in order to remember it.

I’m not vain or vulgar or a social climber. Far too old for that. My plate was bought years and years ago. It’s useful when I have to put it in the hospital or other ANPR car park machines. My last car was 11 years old and if it had still worked I would have still had it, with my initials on. My friends find it useful to spot where I am out and about as I have health issues and they know if they see it around I’m ok. If they don’t see it outside the village shop, church, doctors cars park, they come to check.
My plate cost me £45. Apparently they are worth more now. It is unreasonable to label people.

Isn't this sort of thread a bit dog in the manger? Really, what does it matter what any of us think? Someone has bought and paid for them which still, so I believe, is our right to do.

If you buy them early enough you only ever have one set to learn. I wish I had known that when I was younger.

I have a cherished plate of my initials, wasn’t expensive so I don’t feel I’m a social climber or snob just personalising a long awaited mini I dreamed of owning one day. I also personalised it with mirror covers and rear view, I don’t like following the crowd either

Wow Gagajo - “ the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!' “
Well thank you for your opinion...
I’m must definitely disagree, I have one, my DH gave me for my 60th and I bought his for his 70th. We have worked hard all our lives and my DH’s first new car purchased when he retired was a treat, as were these number plates - gifts to reward to each other for all the careful management of our finances over the years. No we’re not social climbers or vulgar and we certainly don’t have money to waste!
I must admit I really don’t mind how other people spend their money, and find it odd that someone should feel so aggressive and angry about it.

Mealybug Wed 19-Feb-20 13:53:39

What does it matter what people spend their own money on, how much wine do you drink, how much do you spend on clothes, holidays etc. I'm far from vulgar or vain and I have my own number plate which ends in Coo from when I had racing pigeons. Get on with your own life and spend your money how you like without being bothered by anyone else's spending.

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 19-Feb-20 13:53:24

Icanhandthemback why would you have to have it transferred every 3 years?

granbabies123 Wed 19-Feb-20 13:50:54

I bought my husband one for his 60th birthday. It has his initials, his occupation (abr) and 60. It was meant to be.

icanhandthemback Wed 19-Feb-20 13:35:40

I wouldn't waste my money on one because I couldn't bear the thought that every 3 years I'd have to pay through the nose to have it transferred. I guess if I am honest, I do have a preconceived "more money than sense" thought when I see one but it wouldn't make me think they were social climbers or vulgar.

MaryXYX Wed 19-Feb-20 13:26:13

I think the most extreme one I've seen was "X3 OXF" on the X3 bus to Oxford!

Opal Wed 19-Feb-20 13:08:39

Wow GagaJo, you sound very bitter and jealous. Have you never spent money on anything just a little bit frivolous? Or is your post just an excuse to have a go at those of us who actually enjoy our lives and our hard-earned money. How sad.

Nannieannietilly Wed 19-Feb-20 13:01:21

What a snobby thing to say GagaJo. Each to their own, and a number plate is hardly something to shudder over. What on earth are you like when something important offends you?

anxiousgran Wed 19-Feb-20 12:59:13

I quite like them, though I wouldn’t have one myself.
I know a head and neck surgeon who has B16 EAR. ?Also my previous dentist had J4 WDR . ?

Buttonjugs Wed 19-Feb-20 12:57:54

The only person I have ever known to have personalised number plates - on three different vehicles at the same time, was an arrogant ex boyfriend. I have always thought they were an ego thing and a little bit embarrassing.

PernillaVanilla Wed 19-Feb-20 12:48:07

The purchase does not indicate someone has "money to burn" in general terms a personal number plate should be a good investment. I worked for a company that bought them for the company cars and then had them valued when the car was sold, always an increase in value. A really good one - common initials and a low number is already expensive but should produce a better return than the paltry amounts the banks and building societies pay.

EllanVannin Wed 19-Feb-20 12:40:38

The best I ever saw was on a very old car ( old registration ) FFS ! then the number. I think the car w.as an old Jaguar

May7 Wed 19-Feb-20 12:40:31

I must admit to finding them show offy and in the same category as designer labels. Personally I wouldn't waste MY money on them but each to his own.
My GC Love to spot them and ponder on who the owners are ......and it's good fun on a car journey.

Maybe my DC will buy me one when I cant remember my number plate on my car. Think that may be coming soon confused

Kalu Wed 19-Feb-20 12:36:48

Yes, you are BVVU.

Really GagaJo? two days on the trot with your dérision and insults regarding anyone’s choice of expenditure!

Your lack of good manners in fact shows a perfect example of vulgarity.

GagaJo Wed 19-Feb-20 12:26:52

As the Victorians said, 'conspicuous consumption'. No different to wearing designer labels, which is equally naff.

Whatever happened to quiet good taste?

Grannyhall29 Wed 19-Feb-20 12:22:14

I don't mind them, you could look at it another way, by having a personalised number plate they could be hiding the fact that they have a really old car and don't want anyone to know they've got an old banger

SalsaQueen Wed 19-Feb-20 12:19:10

My husband has got one, with his initials, on his (very old) Mercedes. He's the least vulgar person you could imagine, and he's never been a social climber. He had a bit of money left to him, an that's what he wanted.

Witzend Wed 19-Feb-20 12:17:23

I saw 6 KNB the other day.
Who on earth would choose that? Assuming he did choose it, of course.

Generally I dislike them as show-offy, look-at-me, but will admit I was once very amused by a very flash Mercedes visiting a neighbour - plate read HOT 69 X .

Neighbour told me it was her boyfriend who she’d picked up at a petrol station - and yes, he was something to do with the porn business or strip clubs, forget the details.

rosenoir Wed 19-Feb-20 12:17:01

I would rather not stand out so would not want one. I think they say look at me which is fine if thats how you feel.

Willow10 Wed 19-Feb-20 12:15:17

My son's number plate came with the car - not personalised. However, it makes me cringe every time I see it. FKU .......

amazonia Wed 19-Feb-20 11:59:53

My husband absolutely loves his. I refuse to have one - prefer to drive more anonymously!
He works very very hard for his money and he's not a social climber - he just loves his cars and number plates.
Each to their own.
