Vanity (personalised) license plates

Following on from the prat tabs/designer labels thread.

IMO' vanity license plates are the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!'

They make me shudder.

We had one in the 80s when they were all the rage ,we sold the car with thhe number plate on it as the buyer had the same initials .Its nobody's business what we spent our hard end cash on and its not a chavvy thing to do

Nannan2 Wed 19-Feb-20 10:37:09

Oh Dillonsgranma, that made me smilesmile theres a car that parks near us and its so obviously as close as they can get to bonjovi its hilariousgrin (im a bonjovi fan but i woudnt go that far)grin

I wouldn't bother with a personal plate but I don't care what people spend their money on and there's plenty more in the world that really does merit a shudder. I guess keeping the same number plate over the years does mean you don't have to trawl your brains when you have to remember your own.

One that amused me years ago was a car owned by the late John Entwistle who I used occasionally to see driving his RR when I was on the school run - the number was PEN1S.

Shudder away. I have had one for 20 years and I love it. If I can remember my name I will know my registration number. That’s me, the vane, social climber. ?

Menopauselbitch Wed 19-Feb-20 10:31:06

Oopsadaisy3
Are they Volkswagen beetles? I remember seeing that plate in Chelsea over 30 years ago so they would,nt have been so expensive then. I thought they were brilliant

Strange the things that wind people up. Live and let live.

henetha Wed 19-Feb-20 10:27:07

They seem pretty harmless to me. Each to his own. We all have our own little vanities and unless they harm others then there's no problem.

Nannan2 Wed 19-Feb-20 10:26:39

Ive thought of getting my son one just initials maybe,as he says he can never get anything with his name on.but id not get him anything embarressing.hmm

I spotted the potential to have my maiden surname on a plate five years before they’d be released. On the day of release I was on line at 8am and bought it for £600 but didn’t buy a new car to put it on until the following year.

When I drove up to see my dad it put the biggest smile on his face and still does to this day and has been worth every penny for that alone. Plus, none of my brothers had the nous to spot it!

On a side note, I have been offered £10,000 for it since by a wealthy businessman who spotted it parked at Manchester Airport and left his details on my windscreen!

I won’t sell it while my dad is alive - it would break his heart!

I like the funny ones..A friend of my son 'inherited' his complete with car when his grandad passed away,as they share same name,so not always just young 'uns with more money than sense or showing off,but a nice way to remember his grandad bysmile

I also have one - a rare indulgence bought after receiving a windfall and not cheap.

I agree that a lot of flashy people have them but anyone who sees me emerging from my car will know straight away that I am not one of them.

chrissyh Wed 19-Feb-20 10:14:56

Our current car came with the last 3 letters 0AP, not personalised by us but very apt. At least it's easy to remember if you have to give your registration number anywhere.

jaylucy Wed 19-Feb-20 10:11:04

They can be fun - just depends on what car they are attached to! Some can be pretty naff!

Shelmiss Wed 19-Feb-20 10:10:47

I have one and my husband has one. Nothing vulgar about it at all.

Dillonsgranma Wed 19-Feb-20 10:10:16

I had one on a car I bought . A POO. It tickled me so I kept it on the next car. Plus a picture of Winnie the Pooh! On back bumper . Raised smiles everywhere ??

Beanie654321 Wed 19-Feb-20 10:09:52

Hi. My husband has "vanity" car reg plates and I think it is upto the individual. He works hard for his money as did I so I say why not. I'm sorry if you dont agree, let's agree to disagree.

Mollygo Wed 19-Feb-20 10:07:29

I like them. Some of the more pretentious ones are really funny. We have one with letters and the last 4 digits of Mum’s phone number on it.
Like craftergran we like to play games with the number plates when I drive GC to school, though I nearly choked at my GD‘a comment on a plate that started PN15.

I gave an elderly gentleman a lift who was feeling a bit unwell,I reversed into another car while pulling away ?hence unsightly damage.Covered it with a sticker that says “ On an adventure before dementia”.Ironically a short time after my husband was diagnosed with dementia ?.

Operalover Wed 19-Feb-20 09:58:53

I bought one last year for my husbands birthday. A great gift for the man who has everything and is hard to buy for. Don’t have money to burn but it’s my choice what I spend my money on.

Davidhs Wed 19-Feb-20 09:56:20

Reverse snobbery to say it’s vulgar

You pay your money you take your choice, just like expensive jewelry or a fancy kitchen or a sporty car it’s all vanity and most of us do it. A few take delight in sackcloth, ashes and austerity so that they feel better than others, that’s their choice as well

Bellasnana Wed 19-Feb-20 09:38:31

They are not unusual in Malta as you can choose your number plate, as long as nobody else has the same one. Mine is the first three letters of my name and the day and month of my birth date. It cost €30 fifteen years ago and I have transferred it to my new car.

I resent being called vulgar and a social climber, although I have been called it before on GN for having artificial grass.grin

J52 Wed 19-Feb-20 09:15:46

I have one on my car that is no longer produced and is fast becoming a classic. It defines the car.
My money, my choice. I can’t see why anyone should ‘shudder’. Strange.
I don’t smoke, so maybe I’ve saved money over the years.

craftergran Wed 19-Feb-20 08:58:33

If they are very easy to read and remember they might cause issues. Say for example, you inadvertantly cut someone up and they later saw your plate. I just don't think they are a good idea.

Also it spoils our car game smile on long journeys we try to make the longest word out of the number plate. SSG could be sausagemeat.

TerriBull Wed 19-Feb-20 08:52:48

My husband had one briefly, I might add his business partner got it for him as a gift. It was his initials plus the age he was at the time. Hated, hated, hated it! particularly when I had to drive that car. I really don't like drawing attention to myself in "a look at me, look what I've got kind of way" In the end I got him to sell it.

Result! [smile}

Lilypops Wed 19-Feb-20 08:30:14

If I had a personalised number plate , it would have to be PMT,, I think drivers would give me a wide berth, they wouldn't want to mess with me !!!
