I’m 70 in December 2020.
My husband ( quite confidently) says I’m in my 70th year now and that this is the norm. ?
I say I’m not as I’m in my 69th .
I agree I will be in my 70th year this December - God willing . I’m not touchy about age btw .
He’s 74 now and will be 75 in November and thinks he’s in his 75 th year presumably . I’ve had to drop the subject as it’s so petty . Any guidance O wise sybils of Gransnet ? He won’t argue with you .

You are in your 70th year! Hope you will be celebrating in style.

I could be wrong, but I think I heard once that the Greeks even take into account the 9 months before birth when talking about age.

Romola Mon 16-Mar-20 12:07:36

Be French! I'm 74 but in French that's sixty-fourteen. So I'm still in my sixties - aren't I?

nipsmum Mon 16-Mar-20 12:07:43

I had an Italian friend who would have insisted that your husband was correct. In 2 weeks I will be in my 80th year.

Your DH is right. When born you are in your 1st year. Confusingly we wait until lst birthday until declaring you are one.

Pussycat2012 Mon 16-Mar-20 12:17:44

Well put Oopsadaisy3, I agree totally. Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear amberdogxK9.?

My Mum was 29 for years until it dawned on us that it wasn’t possible. Age really is just a number. Some people are old at 50 and one man used to bounce into the surgery and enjoyed giving his date of birth as ‘98 - meaning 1898 but it did have us foxed initially!

Kerenhappuch Mon 16-Mar-20 12:30:33

Your first birthday marks the END of your first year, and so it goes on.

Esspee Mon 16-Mar-20 12:39:29

I guess this discussion arose due to the intention to quarantine the elderly. I say if it is to your advantage you are in your 70th year, if it is not to your advantage then you are 69. The best of both worlds. ?

POGS Mon 16-Mar-20 12:45:34

Right here goes again. Definately bored ?

Why don't we call a new born baby 1 years old and when said baby reaches 12 months we call it 2 years old.

Because we use weeks and months prior to it's 1st birthday.

Still thinking both are right.

rowanflower0 Mon 16-Mar-20 13:25:06

Between being born and your first birthday you are IN YOUR FIRST YEAR. but you are NOT YET ONE.

YOU ARE IN YOUR 70TH YEAR, but you are not yet 70 !!!!

00mam00 Mon 16-Mar-20 14:53:34

No, no, no, a 6 month old baby isn’t one year old until it’s reached 12 months old.

It’s the difference between how old you are and which year you are in.

SirChenjin Mon 16-Mar-20 15:13:06

A baby is in its first year of life up until its first birthday - therefore you’re in your 70th year of life until your 70th birthday smile

GeorgyGirl Mon 16-Mar-20 15:13:13

Yes, when you have had your 69th Birthday, you are then entering into your 70th year at the end of which you celebrate on your 70th Birthday having reached it.

starbird Mon 16-Mar-20 15:59:53

A toddler of say six months is said to be in its 1st year and it goes on from there.

My father wanted to live to 80 years but died at 79 - we put “in his 80th year” on the gravestone. ?

trisher Mon 16-Mar-20 16:04:46

You are in your 70th year and in some cultures you would already be 70 as they count a baby as 1 from its birth. So you do have something to be thankful for.

Madmaggie Mon 16-Mar-20 16:06:19

Yes, he's right (on this occasion) blush

wolfie1 Mon 16-Mar-20 16:11:51

I was going to say exactly the same

LuckyFour Mon 16-Mar-20 18:51:35

Your age is 69 but you are in your 70th year. When you are born you will be in your 1st year until you turn one year old. The day after your first birthday you will be in your second year.

BlueBelle Mon 16-Mar-20 19:13:48

Husband definitely right you are in your 70 year and explained well by luckyfour

GabriellaG54 Tue 17-Mar-20 09:56:00

You are still enjoying your 69th year until you are 70.
At uni you are in your second year the day after the first one ends and in it for the following 364 days ??

annodomini Tue 17-Mar-20 10:10:18

Nonsense, Gabriella. As I thought I had explained up-thread : OP was in her first year before she was a year old so it follows that she was in her second year before she was two and so on until now she is in her 70th year while she is 69.

annodomini Tue 17-Mar-20 10:38:48

Apologies, Luckyfour. I got so irritated by G54's ignorant post that I didn't look back on your post saying the same as mine.

SirChenjin Tue 17-Mar-20 12:51:29

No Gabs - you’re in your first year of life until you turn 1, then you’re in your 2nd year of life until your turn 2. Count up the way until you get to 69 and then substitute the numbers and it becomes clear - once you turn 69 you’re in your 70th year up until you turn 70.

Lancslass1 Tue 17-Mar-20 16:24:19

Well I reckon you know the answer by now Amberdog
Like Belladonna(I presume-sorry if that is not correct-since I was born in October 1940,I am in my 80th year.
