I’m 70 in December 2020.
My husband ( quite confidently) says I’m in my 70th year now and that this is the norm. ?
I say I’m not as I’m in my 69th .
I agree I will be in my 70th year this December - God willing . I’m not touchy about age btw .
He’s 74 now and will be 75 in November and thinks he’s in his 75 th year presumably . I’ve had to drop the subject as it’s so petty . Any guidance O wise sybils of Gransnet ? He won’t argue with you .

Oh bugger you have, all got me thinking. ?

Maggiemaybe Sun 15-Mar-20 17:02:21

So I’m 65, but in my 66th year. That’s cheered me up - it somehow sounds as if I’m so much nearer to getting my pension. smile

When you were in your first year, you were a year old at the end of it. Now you are in your 70th year, and 70 years old at the end of it?.

Daisymae Sun 15-Mar-20 17:12:58

I used to have this discussion with my mum. Frequently. When you are born you are in your first year. So yes, your DH is correct you are in your 70th year.

Daisydoes Sun 15-Mar-20 17:25:12

He may well be technically right...... But I would still be in my 69th year if I were you!
may explain why I am still 59 ??

SirChenjin Sun 15-Mar-20 17:58:31

I’m with the others who say your husband’s right - sorry!

annodomini Sun 15-Mar-20 18:02:02

He is right. The year you were born (0 - 1) is your first. Take it from there and 69 - 70 is your 70th. I am in my 80th year now.

Callistemon Sun 15-Mar-20 18:05:59

You're in your 70th year and he is in his 75th year.

However, tell him as you are only 69 you'll be allowed out and he will have to go into isolation.

Callistemon Sun 15-Mar-20 18:07:06

Ps he won't argue with us all because he's right, sorry amber
wink

We had a rather eccentric History teacher who never used to keep it simple, but would say, for example:

"Elizabeth I was a young woman of some 23 Summers."

Ruddy annoying when you were frantically scribbling down notes.

POGS Sun 15-Mar-20 20:12:15

Right, here goes, I carried on thinking and that was dangerous.

'Think about a baby: when it reaches its first birthday it has lived for one year already. On its first birthday it enters its second year which comes to an end on its second birthday.'
----

'2) When you were a baby of a few months, were you in your first year until you reached your birthday?

3) When you were one and a half, were you still in your first year or halfway through your second?'
--

When I was a baby I was referred to in weeks / months and I was 1 year old 12 months after being born and hence I was 1 year old only from that date. I had lived for a year by then so I was in my 2 nd year.

Is this a case of no right and no wrong.?

I am a very simple soul obviously ?

Also I must be very, very bored ?

What about ' NEXT ' Thursday and ' THIS ' Thursday. They are both the same aren't they but I fall out with my hubby over that.

Oh hell amberdog, look what you've done to me.

Age can be complicated. I had to look up the East Asian system when enrolling students. Their given en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_age_reckoningage and date of birth was rejected by our college computer!

Hetty58 Sun 15-Mar-20 20:20:02

(given age)

CherryCezzy Sun 15-Mar-20 20:46:30

Either way Amberdog you're not in your 70s yet.
Elengran what do you do if you have two bathrooms and only two toilet rolls? In these surreal times it would appear that everyone has lots of bathrooms.

Hetty58 Sun 15-Mar-20 20:54:12

Yes, funny that! I do have a choice of three - but even I'm very well aware that the average home may only have one!

sukie Sun 15-Mar-20 21:24:37

I agree with your husband. My mom celebrated her 99th birthday in January. She will occasionally mention in conversation that she is now in her 100th year. And she is.

Tangerine Sun 15-Mar-20 23:08:55

Yes, you are in your 70th year.

welbeck Mon 16-Mar-20 00:20:35

dear sukie, any talk of over 70s self isolating across the pond ?

sukie Mon 16-Mar-20 03:45:08

welbeck, I've not heard any talk of it at all over here as far as specific age groups though there are constant reminders that the older population is more at risk. But generally speaking, everyone is being encouraged to stay home.

sukie Mon 16-Mar-20 04:14:56

welbeck, shortly after writing the above, I saw that California's governor is calling for seniors and anyone with a chronic health condition to self isolate. In this news release, seniors are referred to as 65 and older:

BlueSky Mon 16-Mar-20 09:02:49

I was hoping I wouldn't be included in the 70+ self isolation yet. I will be 71 in December.confused

grannypiper Mon 16-Mar-20 09:43:29

You have completed 69 years and are now working on your 70th year

PernillaVanilla Mon 16-Mar-20 09:50:12

DH's grandfather wanted people to think he was old, he regarded this as a badge of honour, after each birthday he would describe his age in the terms "next year I will be entering my x th year" so when he was 78 he was saying that next year he would be entering his 80th year. Not a trait i will be adopting!

henetha Mon 16-Mar-20 09:57:57

On your 70th birthday you will have lived for 70 years, so from the day after that you are then in your 71st year.
So, I'm sorry, but he is right....

Moggycuddler Mon 16-Mar-20 11:57:09

You are in your 70th year between your 69th birthday and your 70th. Between your 70th and 71st birthdays, you are in your 71st year. You are alive for 1 year upto your 1st birthday. That is your 1st year. After you turn 1, you enter your 2nd year of life. It's not hard to figure.
