Colourful chalk on brick walls

I am seeing photos everywhere of people’s houses where they have been busy colouring in the bricks with chalk as a sign of support for the NHS.
Whilst it looks lovely and colourful at the moment am I the only one thinking about how they will have a dreadful time trying to clean it off in the future and will look absolutely awful.

God there are some miserable buggers about. I wouldn't care what people used to grafitti my house as long as its bright, cheery and happy!!
I miss my GC so much, so seeing the kids outside their houses from my window smiling as they bring some much needed colour to a scary world, really warms my heart.
There are a lot of only children near me and they are sad, lonely and don't understand whats going on, and this could go on for a good while yet...
Lighten up, and you might find that you enjoy this precious thing called life a little bit more, in fact, order some chalk from Amazon and do some yourself!! ;-)

Giving the children a chance to be children rather than the mini grown ups that they are usually expected to be!
It will wash off and who cares if it doesn't? different thing if it was aerosol paint!

Rosieroe As I am unable to go out I have not seen this.

It sounds wonderful!

I would encourage people to be creative, to use cheerful colours and devote their creativity as a work of thanks to those dedicated people helping us all so bravely at this time.

How could you be negative about such an uplifting idea?

Xrgran. Exactly! I award the golden hammer for hitting the nail on the head! ? ?? ? (I know - It's silver! sorry we do not have a gold one but please have the medal and fanfare to make up for it)

Yes you are both being absurd Rosieroe&Esspree, let kids live for goodness sake! It's not paint, all you have to worry about is coloured chalk on pavements/walls? People are dying...kids dont understand what's happening to their routines, I think its beautiful to actually see kids outside rather than faces stuck to computers, iPads etc. Of course it washes away with the rain.

grannypiper Sat 18-Apr-20 12:10:04

It.s chalk ! Water washes it away. What a sad state of affairs if children cant chalk on the path or walls.

Tillybelle Sat 18-Apr-20 12:11:12

Tee hee hee jaylucy, good idea, ...... now then, Amazon, aerosol paint... got any neon colours?

Tillybelle Sat 18-Apr-20 12:16:53

I have a lovely area of blank brickwork on the gable end of my house. I'd be happy to find out one day that Banksy had been round overnight! Failing that, if someone wants to chalk a rainbow - why should I spoil their fun?

When I was a kid we used to chalk a hopscotch game on the pavement. It always washed away by the next day if it rained . Or most of it did. There used to be one elderly lady who sometimes told us off . We used to think she was a witch! This was in an era when kids ALL played outside in the streets so it couldn’t have been the noise . Just the chalk . She never complained if we had skipping ropes . 50 or so years on and it’s amazing that her spirit still lives on in some people ! Personally I think it’s great to see the rainbows in windows and it’s good that children have been involved . Chalk on pavements and walls is just another aspect . At least it’s not sprayed on with aerosol cans! It must be a dreadful and worrying time to be a young child at the moment. Anything that brings a bit of sunshine into a child’s life should be welcome don’t you think?

sarahanew Sat 18-Apr-20 13:40:46

The rain will wash it off, no need to worry

oscaro11 Sat 18-Apr-20 13:50:39

If it’s just chalk, it will wash away. It’s keeping kids occupied in an innocent way and there’s nothing wrong with that. If it were paint it’d be a different matter; drawing rainbows on the pavements is innocent fun during dark times. Didn’t we all play hopscotch when we were young?

instagran Sat 18-Apr-20 15:01:16

It's washable, chalk for goodness sake Esspee and Rosieroe. Don't say you were never a little child!

Callistemon Sat 18-Apr-20 15:07:56

I thought I'd order some for the DGC, inspired by this thread but it's out of stock!!

Maggiemaybe Sat 18-Apr-20 15:18:12

Oh. sad I was just going to order some for myself. grin

Granartisan Sat 18-Apr-20 15:19:32

Let's celebrate the children's efforts! We need positivity now not complaints! Some people are only happy when they are moaning!

I think it's lovely. A little girl near us has drawn a beautiful rainbow with stars and unicorns.

Totally harmless and it will all wash away eventually

People have been chalking pavements for years. Here's a few examples

I got a free pattern to crochet a rainbow but it's probably beyond my capabilities as I'd have to follow a pattern!
And I don't have all the colours.

If anyone is interested, it's on the Deramores website.

Callistemon Sat 18-Apr-20 16:10:43

Thanks for reminding us, Oopsminty

I have seen some wonderful pavement art over the years in various towns and cities, it is amazing.

Pussycat2012 Sat 18-Apr-20 16:27:14

I agree with CherryCezzy,as I also drew hopscotch grids on the pavement and more besides and all were washed away by the rain to my annoyance!

Lizbethann55 Sat 18-Apr-20 17:00:58

I am lucky in that my GC li e round the corner. Their daily walk with whichever parent is at home that day invariably comes past our house and we have a secret drop off where we put little treats ( well disinfected and wrapped) for the older one to find (the younger one is still a baby and the walk is usually to get him to sleep in his pushchair). I read this thread and thought " now there's an idea" so I will be straight on to Amazon to try to get some chunky chalk.

Stella14 Sat 18-Apr-20 17:17:54

Yep, you’re being unreasonable!

NfkDumpling Sat 18-Apr-20 18:43:31

Our DGD2 chalked fish and flowers on the pavement, but just outside her own house, and a hopscotch too. Apparently a lot of adults couldn't walk over the hopscotch without hospscotching!

Wheniwasyourage Sat 18-Apr-20 18:55:53

As we don't have any children living within sight of the house, we didn't know that this was happening, and so when we came across a hopscotch and a trail to follow on a pavement this morning on our walk, we were delighted! (And had a go, of course, but it was designed for smaller feet blush.)

A lovely idea, and so is the one about rainbows in the windows.

Chalk Washes away in the first decent rainfall. For heavens sake let the Children show their interest and support, they are going to need the NHS a lot longer than we are, and, if they now believe in it as much as we do, then it’s future is likely to be MORE secure in the future. After all those children ARE the future.,
