Colourful chalk on brick walls

I am seeing photos everywhere of people’s houses where they have been busy colouring in the bricks with chalk as a sign of support for the NHS.
Whilst it looks lovely and colourful at the moment am I the only one thinking about how they will have a dreadful time trying to clean it off in the future and will look absolutely awful.

My garden path is covered in chalk drawings done by the child who lives across the road. Before anyone leaps on me I wasn't outside with her when she did it but she had permission. It makes me smile every time I go outside. She's also decorated the pavement. Her innocent rainbows and "Be Happy" slogans are lovely.

Isn't it interesting how we all see something different! Some of us thankfully very few see a child's chalk drawings as innocent fun and a pleasure to see, whilst others see it as a defacement and something that should be irradiated. Maybe I should feel guilty that I gave my GC a huge tub of chubby chalks last summer and they're still using them now. But I don't! grin

Can’t believe we’re going down this road .... so much to be grateful for when so very many have lost and are losing their lives and loved ones. The number of abused children, hungry families don’t think wash off chalk drawings come quite in the same category . What happened to think of others before ourselves. If some happiness can be brought about then so be it. Stay safe and thank goodness for the likes of Captain Tom ?

Yes,and it makes them sound very mean to be complaining over that when we have bigger worries right nowhmm..if i see any it will make me smile.smile and as most of them are rainbows for NHS & the keyworkers it makes these people sound especially mean.sad and also,if its on a public pavement, then yes,not your own property- so stop moaning please.& be glad youre still here to see the kids drawings. They are a little brightness right nowsmile

RosieRoe maybe you should consider yourself lucky if that is the most significant thing you have to worry about at present?

Marjgran Sat 18-Apr-20 10:44:38

Yes, totally unreasonable. And do you really think it will “all be over”? It may be years. Plenty of time for the scrubbing brush. Unless it is obscene of course!

go kids go!

Acer Sat 18-Apr-20 10:50:39

Never mind the children am thinking of drawing on the pavement just to hopefully brighten someone’s day, looking forward to reality concert later with Elton John , Stones etc, might bring some needed sunshine in our heats ! ?

Jaycee5,ring the council anyway,as broken or smashed windows Should be considered an emergency repair,as its classed as security- give it a try monday.

Nannan2 Sat 18-Apr-20 10:55:42

If i could still stand on one leg to hop(very bad osteoarthritis) iď love to see a hopscotch chalked on the shared pathway outside- (or even my own path) I'd definitely have a go if i could manage it,but i cant.sad

Unbelievable. That anyone could even think that is beyond me. Bet you're fun at parties.

I had a lovely surprise one of the little girls I look after at nursery left one on my doorstep they knocked and went to the bottom of the garden. Made me cry she was missing me. Can’t wait to get back.

Jaycee5 Sat 18-Apr-20 11:03:35

Nannan2 The plastic covering is still there as it was security glass but I did ring because my neighbours downstairs are upset but I only got a recorded message. I also tried to use their email system but it said that only non essential repairs should be reported that way.
I will try again on Monday and I think they probably will come out although I don't like to make them come out. They may only be paid for call outs so they may not be too concerned and it does not mean them having to go into any of our flats.

I cannot believe I am reading this!!!!!!!! Some of us, me in particular, battle depression every day and seeing these chalk drawings really cheers me up. We are battling this horrific virus and some are dying and you moan about a bit of chalk that will be gone in the rain. Get over yourself!

Saggi Sat 18-Apr-20 11:17:24

Here’s a thought .... leave it on the walls and pavements ... maybe it’ll remind us of the real people of this country..... and it isn’t overpaid footballers and big hair, big lipped and big boobed brainless celebrities.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 18-Apr-20 11:18:20

Look on it as a learning curve for the children appreciating the NHS!!

Rosieroe Sat 18-Apr-20 11:19:38

It’s interesting to see how some of you are quick to direct personal abuse at me for expressing concern that chalk covering the complete front of a house may be difficult to remove. I never said I disagree with it being done - only that it may be a problem to take off again. I’m sorry that a lot of you chose to read an expression of concern as an expression of condemnation.

I love to see children, my grandchildren included, motivated into making rainbows and paintings to show their support for front line workers and to see chalking games on footpaths again is wonderful.

No child could cover the whole house, top to bottom, in chalk. It takes at least one adult with a set of ladders.

mrsgreenfingers56 Sat 18-Apr-20 11:19:41

Chalk soon comes off with rain and hey presto just started here so you won't have to worry anymore.

Purplepixie Sat 18-Apr-20 11:25:38

No one is directing personal abuse at you but right now it is the last thing we want to read. There are several houses near me that have chalk on the walls, gates and paths and it makes people smile. If you didn’t want anyone to retaliate then maybe you shouldn’t have put anything.

Grandmamaoftwo Sat 18-Apr-20 11:29:47

I used chalk (the giant stick ones) and left messages of thanks on my garden path for the milkman, the postman and the binmen, we've had rain today and it's now all washed away.
I will repeat it when the path is dry.

Pippa22 Sat 18-Apr-20 11:30:53

Esspee, chalked pavements are so lovely to see when out for a walk and gives children, and fun loving adults something to enjoy and give pleasure whilst outside. The NHS messages and rainbows are moving and hopscotches and line trails are fun. Unfortunately Esspee you don’t sound as if you would appreciate any of this, what a shame as you are missing so much. Try lightening up it might make this awful situation a bit more bearable.

Riggie Sat 18-Apr-20 11:31:26

Given that I have seen pictures of house fronts completely covered in chalk from ground to roof I am guessing its not little kids being sent up ladders to do it. I think its completely mad.

rowyn Sat 18-Apr-20 11:31:41

Lot more to be worried about than a bit of colourful decoration!

granbabies123 Sat 18-Apr-20 11:44:45

I agreeXtgran far more important issues. Friend's mum died of covid last night. So very sad I'm sure she wouldn't have minded abit of colour outside her window.

Laurensnan Sat 18-Apr-20 11:48:00

I've got a rainbow painted directly onto my window. Painted from the inside with children's paints. A I've got a chalked picture on a paving stone outside my house, my garden wall has the stones coloured in. I have 3 grandchildren who I haven't seen since lockdown so I can't blame them. Yes, it was me. I did it!! ?. I'm off with my special pavement chalk to draw smiley pictures in the park today. If I make someone smile I'm happy, but at the end of the day it'll wash off soon! I'm having fun, the 59 year old me is loving being a child .....even in the absence of grandchildren to make an excuse for it ?.
