Do you go along your road asking people if it is ok when you mow your garden?
I do not like radios in other peoples gardens but accept that they do.
Good Morning Thursday 14th May 2026
Angela Rayner cleared by HMRC. What a coincidence!
AIBU on the lovely bank holiday afternoon sitting in the garden with my locked in family. The neighbours decided to mow and strim their lawn even though they could hear we were in the garden. I was very upset and feel that they should not have been doing this on a special afternoon when the sun was shining. Arn't we allowed any time any more when we can relax and enjoy our gardens without constant noise.

Isnt mowing the lawn on a (sunny) bank holiday a british tradition anyway
@MawB well said it sounds like this Caramel person feels like he/she is one of the `entitled` few, as I've said before, I am Blind and so, therefore, must use the computer with the aid of specialised audible software but I will NEVER allow my disabilities to overcome my abilities. Who on earth does Caramel think she is? Being Blind my other senses are more alert so my hearing is extra sensitive so I can hear folk all the time BUT I UNDERSTAND OTHER PEOPLE ESPECIALLY KIDS WANT TO MAKE A NOISE AND HAVE FUN.
Sorry but folk like him/her get `right up my nose` I bet he/she laid in bed wondering what can I whinge about today.
Every day does feel like a sunday- and i thought the bank holiday went largely unnoticed as it was just same as others! In fact every day feels so much like a sunday ive stopped making special sunday roast dinners as i just do usual easier every day meals now, cause every days the same anyway!
Not being mean but I enjoy the hum of a lawn mower, and surely, if your gardens are small, it shouldn't have take long, and if your gardens are large, then you should have a spot where the noise doesn't bother you!
I feel for my daughter, living in a lovely neighborhood, well, it was until all police station was shut down, and now the teens all sit behind her garden where there is a footpath that used to be pretty flowers and lead onto a field, now the teens use it to smoke their 'zoot' (going by what the daughter overhears lol) have their music playing on their phones and portable speakers, and have even taken chairs there, and as my daughters garden is tiny, all the smoke goes into her home.
Of course by the time anyone can come if she reports it, they are long gone.
We are having to adjust, its hard, but if your only problem right now is the sound of a mower, then do please count those blessings & stay safe. xxx
At one time we had a small garden with children on one side who whined and screamed from the moment they got home from school in the afternoon until bedtime. This was then followed by the large dog on the other side who barked continuously from the time his owner went out in the evening until well past midnight. We had to move in the end. Believe me a mower and strimmer for a few hours are nothing compared to continuous noise from 3.30 until midnight.
I have to admit that the thump, thump, thump of footballs really gets to me. Especially when they are kicked into our decked area which is heavy with potted plants. The footballs are not returned until they come to ask for them, then they are thrown back over the fence. We have large gardens but the kids play very near to the house, bushy, oh why can’t they play further back. Mowing/strimming doesn’t bother me But footballs and loud music- NO.
What is bushy, where did that come from.
Here by common consent we don't mow lawns or use things like hedge cutters on Sundays, but other than that no-one would dream of complaining because a neighbour is using a mower or even a circular saw.
May I ask, when you would prefer them to do their gardening?
I sympathise with the OP. I live in a rural area where I have a couple of neighbours who seem to spend every minute of any sunny day chainsawing, strimming, mowing, angle-grinding. Sundays, bank holidays, summer evenings... it drives me mad. I can't listen to music quietly, read a book, hear the birdsong and end up indoors with the windows shut listening to music or audio books via noise cancelling earphones to drown out the noise.
It would be fantastic if there was just one day a week where all power tools and loud noise was banned. I believe this is the case in Germany? How lovely to know that you you could be guaranteed one day a week when you you sit outside with a book, or friends having a lovely chat in peace.
Oh dear...….stop complaining ! You are alive....your family are alive....the sun is shining ! be kind....
Totally unreasonable - people choose to mow their lawns when it suits THEM, not other people! Just think yourself lucky you actually have neighbours who you can see, hear, wave to & speak to at this time. We live in the middle of our farm, half a mile away from a small country road with no neighbours closer than half a mile. Don't get me wrong, it's an idyllic place to live and in many ways we are extremely blessed but it's very lonely at the moment with just the 2 of us here. I'd love to have a close neighbour doing his lawn!!
My neighbours keep several horses that smell in their 4 acres They have 3 dogs, two that bark for Britain. Occasionally the totally mad pets get into our Garden and try and menace us.
They have travelled miles away, to cover their Rottweiler bitch, when we are in lockdown.
They wanted us to build and pay for a new fence, to keep their animals in. They don’t talk, they screech a lot. The partner ( not married) drinks and will squeeze me and any female in the vicinity.
They arrived in our beautiful village, as one of their Parents ( now dead) had shops. The two incumbents hate each other. They were bus drivers and are rough diamonds, They are Intellectually challenged, but know everything about everything.
When it’s a lovely day, you would think they are being murdered by a tractor.
They make me laugh and we get along with them as they are daft.
My husband does a imitation of a machine gun behind the hedge, when their yelling, dogs barking, and the smell of horse poo, gets too much.
They would do anything for you, but you wouldn’t want them to.
I really can’t see any problem at all. Lawns have to be mowed and it’s better than neighbours who don’t bother at all and then the garden becomes an eyesore of a jungle.
I’m rather pleased that you are no neighbour of mine.
I find the sound of grass mowing quite relaxing and it can only be done on a dry day so yes you are being unreasonable.
What it is not relaxing is a large paved area being pressure washed, the noise of the motor is annoying and the whole job seems to take a long time.
Mowing the lawn is a normal thing to do in good weather. I used have someone who whinged when I did the garden on a Sunday. I was doing overtime all Saturday and 5 nights a week. I think mowing the lawn and strimming is fine. It's not as if they have a young lad who revs his motorbike up and down. Now that is annoying. I don't see how someone mowing the lawn or strimming their hedge is a problem!
One of my neighbours uses an old fashioned roller mower. The noise rather irritates me. I wouldn't dream of complaining about it.
I was rather annoyed about the binmen having a loud conversation outside my window at 6am yesterday morning though, very thoughtless ?.
You are very lucky to have a garden that is for your personal use. I have a communal garden. I'm isolating. I haven't used the garden apart from hanging washing on the odd occasion.
There are worse things you're neighbours could be doing. My next door neighbour likes to abuse his wife. That is not pleasant, I can tell you!!!
Yes you are being very unreasonable, when else are people supposed to be the garden than at the weekend
I’m new to Gransnet and am frustrated about the constant use of initials! I understand DB and DS etc but what is AIBU?
Could you use a “board of clues” please?
Can’t remember the word I am looking for, so unlikely to be able to translate this ‘language’
Hi JennyCee , AIBU is just 'am I being unreasonable' . There is a list of acronyms that you can access at the bottom of the page.
Seems that after this long in lockdown every little thing is causing irritation , I have neighbours with a very small garden that they took 60 minutes to mow .. no idea why but it did. They put the trampoline for the kids right next to the fence , so I get to see them and hear them having a fabulous time. My other neighbours dog barks like a lunatic every time a lawnmower gets started .. which is fun.
I’m pretty sure the lyrics of the song were not ‘ don’t worry about a thing , coz every little things gonna cause a fight ‘
At least now you can go out for the day when they mow.
Generally it's not too bad where I live however there is one family who live on the next street that backs on to our garden. They're about 3 houses along. Just about every day they have music playing, kids kicking football against the fence, trampolining, etc. They ebbing having BBQs too, and parties usually. Sadly she is very loud, as are her friends when they go round to party (luckily only once during lockdown but usually at least twice a month). We've known them be shrieking and mucking about until 3 and 4 in the morning. A new neighbour immediately behind decided to blast heavy metal the other day and we shouted to ask him to turn it down which he did after a while.
On the other hand we have an old man on our street who sits and gossips all day when it's not raining, our the front of his house. We call him clattergobs. It's usually rubbish and sometimes is horrible, but we can all hear him with the windows and doors shut and his voice also carries into the back garden.
I wonder if I'm just being picky, but when I have visitors, they say the noise is terrible.
I know I should contact the council but just wish it wasn't always me who has to do something for the benefit of everyone else. Why can other neighbours not just report it instead of waiting for me to? They complain to me.
I love to hear the children joyfully screaming and playing, particularly in these most difficult times. It makes me feel alive. As for mowing a lawn, for heavens sake why not.
Am I missing something? Tuesday? Bank Holiday? And actually, yes I do think you ABU, they can hardly cut the grass when it's raining! During this pandemic we should be grateful that we can actually sit outside and enjoy the sunshine rather than working in the hospitals, occupying a bed in ITU or worse still, laying in a slab in the mortuary!!!!! Get a grip!
Yes you ABU as it may have been the only time they could do it. Give them a break...am sure there may be things that annoy them.
You need to learn to be mote tolerant and it probably didn't last long eithrr
