I went to our local post office to return a parcel and was the only one there wearing a mask.
Its a tiny shop and can only accommodate 3 people at a time and everyone was standing 6ft apart, but I felt a bit foolish in my mask. In fact I stood there feeling a real plonker.
Was I right in continuing to wear it, or should I have followed the others and defied the virus? What would you have done?
(I am 81 but in good health)

The UK has a very poor success rate in controlling this virus.
I follow the countries who have good success rates and wearing masks everywhere is compulsory.

I wear a mask I don’t want to breath in any ones else’s germs thank you. Don’t worry about what other people are thinking. I feel better for wearing it that’s all that matters.

Always social distance. If I have to go into PO or local shop I always wear mask and gloves. Couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks. Safety first in my book wink

I don’t think people are surprised to see anyone wearing a mask . I do when I go into a shop . It’s about what’s safe for you

I don’t know if people realise. Wearing a mask protects other people from you. It does not protect you from other people.
So if you cough behind your mask then the spray from the cough is contained .

I’m certain we are past thinking that anyone wearing a mask looks strange or out of place. You are thoughtful and it can only help. I haven’t been out to any shops as yet but plan to next week. I feel nervous to get the first time shopping out of the way and am thankful to people like you who plan ahead. Take care all x

You did right don’t defy the virus, you can never be too careful

I wear mine all the time. Inlocal shops and out walking as the path I walk is communal and the runners are always huffing and puffing past and I don’t think a lot of people try and move to side either. My daughter lived in Japan for 16 years and kids had to wear them at school at first sign of sniffing, so with all my visits, got used to them.

I wear my mask in any enclosed space. The last thing I am going to worry about is what others are doing.
If I was lying in a hospital bed I wouldn’t be giving others one of my precious thoughts.
Man up, ( or Woman up) At 81 I would know who was more important to me, than me, and it’s ME. Life is short.

Supermarkets, markets, public transport and shopping malls require everyone to wear a mask here in Versailles. Make your own material one or those the local town hall gives out, which can be washed or disposable ones. They don’t stop you catching the the virus but helps to contain it if you an unaware carrier. Medical ones can be given free of charge with a certificate which help to stop the virus entering your body. Sadly those under 35 seem not to wear any in the street, as the are not worried, therefore older people like me have to cross the road to avoid them Under 11s do not wear them to school but older ones do. We are Also asked to use the gel provided at each shop / market entrance. Of course you would not wear any if there were no people nearby

I haven't been anywhere since February but have disposable masks for emergencies and today have ordered some washable cotton masks for when we start travelling around.
I think it makes sense to protect yourself even if others don't.

I bought some masks online EXD but I can never seem to remember to take them with me! I certainly wouldn't feel awkward wearing one if I could remember to take them!

I had an appointment at SpecSavers and thought...must remember to take mask! Which I did, but then lost it somewhere between car and shop!!! I apologised but they said no worries WE have all got masks on!

Maybe IF it becomes compulsory for all to wear masks we will get used to it? Other than that I think you are doing just right.

I can't stop wearing a mask now. I have only just perfected my three layers, nose clip and filter pocket pattern. ?

rubysong Tue 09-Jun-20 18:31:08

I wouldn't wear one in the open but I do in shops, even though I am usually the only one.

grandMattie I just discovered a hijab only covers the face-not even the mouth - the all in one things are called something else - so I rather think you'd better reconsider ...... shock

Alexa Tue 09-Jun-20 17:43:44

Long live the "real plonkers" who do the right thing especially when nobody else is doing the right thing!

grandMattie Tue 09-Jun-20 17:35:37

I’ve no idea, but it appeals to me. Might be naked under it for all one knows... ?

Kalu Tue 09-Jun-20 17:02:38

The few times I have been in a shop I have always worn a mask and disposable gloves. Anything that stops the spread of the virus must be a no brainer surely?

annodomini Tue 09-Jun-20 16:55:19

won-way ? one-way, of course.

annodomini Tue 09-Jun-20 16:54:32

I usually wear it for shopping though last week there wasn't anyone else wearing one. Today I didn't have it with me but popped into the nearby Co-op which has a very good won-way system and 6ft gaps measured out at the checkouts. The checkouts have perspex shields. It's efficient and convenient.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 09-Jun-20 16:46:02

I wear a mask, there seem to be a few of us doing so. Don't feel silly, if you feel it's the right thing to do that's all there is to it. Perhaps next week when people are supposed to wear them on public transport you won't feel like the odd one out.

bikergran Tue 09-Jun-20 16:40:01

The supermarket where I work ,less and less people seem to be wearing masks.

Went in local superstore Tesco and again very few wearing masks, one of the staff who was directing people to the checkouts had a face visor on.

ExD Tue 09-Jun-20 16:29:22

Never tried a hijab - are they really airy? I must say I found the mask uncomfortable.

grandMattie Tue 09-Jun-20 16:06:18

I’m going to get a hijab. Easier to wear and airier than a mask... ?

Marmight Tue 09-Jun-20 15:50:50

Wear it!
I wore a mask when delivering my car for its service. I waited outside while the work was done. All the mechanics wore masks & ‘sanitized’ the car when finished. On the way home I went into Aldi, first shop visit for 11 weeks. I was the only person there wearing a mask which rather surprised me. Wearing one doesn't bother me - in fact I think they’ll soon become the the latest fashion must-wear. Hiding behind one has that strange allure and as a bonus hides some of the wrinkles grin.
Seriously, it’s been recommended that we should wear a mask. I shall continue to do so when in busy public areas for the foreseeable future. Don’t worry about feeling a plonker.
