Boris Johnson using the term "kids"

Every time I hear Boris Johnson referring to children as "kids" I scream at the radio. They are not baby goats! My husband says Boris is trying to appeal to the masses but it just annoys me.

FarNorth Wed 17-Jun-20 13:39:21

There are a lot of more important things than that to dislike about Johnson.

Ellianne Wed 17-Jun-20 13:42:00

Kid is a very old world for a child. It comes from the Germanic "Kind". Quite acceptable.

EllanVannin Wed 17-Jun-20 13:42:43

Really and truthfully, is there anyone who could do his job any better ? Names on a postage stamp, please.

Pantglas2 Wed 17-Jun-20 13:45:08

As FarNorth says, it’s the least of our worries!

Mal44 Wed 17-Jun-20 13:46:44

Mr Johnson always refers to children and young people as kids and it really grates with me too crossstitchgill.

MissAdventure Wed 17-Jun-20 13:48:41

I don't care much what terms others use, or how they speak.
As long as we all communicate, that's all that matters.

Johnson has communicated his feelings for the public very well by his actions in the last few weeks.

Hetty58 Wed 17-Jun-20 13:52:16

Yes, MissAdventure, actions speak louder than words!

MissAdventure Wed 17-Jun-20 13:55:10

S'right, innit bruh? wink

Wheniwasyourage Wed 17-Jun-20 14:25:17

It may be the least of our worries, but I too find it very irritating.

Lucca Wed 17-Jun-20 14:41:32

I’d swap his use of “kids” for him brushing his hair like a grownup

AGAA4 Wed 17-Jun-20 15:33:29

As PM I think he should use the word "children" not kids but it is a trivial thing.

yggdrasil Wed 17-Jun-20 16:28:55

The word 'kids' is used a lot in other parts of the world that are English speaking, and so has become usual here. It covers all ages, your kids can be babies, children, teenagers, or adults.

Evoha16 Wed 17-Jun-20 16:36:59

Odd that Yggdrasil we have babies toddlers teenagers in our Family and not one has four legs ?

WOODMOUSE49 Wed 17-Jun-20 17:04:59

Talking of 'kids', which isn't a term I like, I remember in briefing last week being told plans for summer schools would be announced mid week (today?).

MawB Wed 17-Jun-20 17:09:04

For Ellianne

lemongrove Wed 17-Jun-20 17:13:44

It seems a very trivial thing to moan about ( calling them kids)
But then moaning knows no bounds on GN lately.

FarNorth Wed 17-Jun-20 17:16:54

Since you asked, crossstitchgill, yes YABU.

Ellianne Wed 17-Jun-20 17:19:36

Nice MawB. Süße Kinder!

Something also tells me the Jewish language has a similar word to kids when talking about children?

MayBee70 Wed 17-Jun-20 17:27:35

Whoever is doing the daily briefing today is also calling children kids and, yes, it does grate on me too.

Inclined to agree. (Is that a first ??!!). That’s why I responded in kind with the hair thing.

Smileless2012 Wed 17-Jun-20 17:52:46

TBH when I hear anyone refer to children as kids, it grates and so many people do nowadays.

Lucca Wed 17-Jun-20 17:54:16

The more I think about the less important it becomes..... its just another aspect of language

phoenix Wed 17-Jun-20 17:55:25

I agree with the OP, his use of the word "kids" grated on me, but I also agree with other posters who say there are more important things to get upset about with regard to Boris.

Now, if someone could just help me to get these splinters out of my bottom............

Nightsky2 Wed 17-Jun-20 17:58:18

Doesn’t bother me, everyone in my family uses the word kids. Nothing wrong with it at all. Some people say children and others say kids. ?‍♀️
