Boris Johnson using the term "kids"

Every time I hear Boris Johnson referring to children as "kids" I scream at the radio. They are not baby goats! My husband says Boris is trying to appeal to the masses but it just annoys me.

I say ‘kids’ frequently, and I am quite fussy about speech and the use of words. It’s acceptable as a colloquial, informal term.

I use the term 'kids' myself. In the bigger picture, does it matter?

Oopsminty, it’s interesting that you say you don’t like hearing people call the PM Boris. It made me think, I can only recall two PMs called by their first names regularly, and those are Maggie and Boris. Are there any others? I can’t think of any.

Doesn’t bother me, it’s not meant to be derogatory.

I call him Johnson.
It sounds more like someone who should be an adult dealing responsibly with the job of prime minister, which he clearly isn't.

MissAdventure Mon 02-Nov-20 21:20:23

Ah! I get what you mean now.
The cogs are grinding slowly today.

Doodledog Mon 02-Nov-20 21:17:46

Neither am I, funnily enough grin. I'm not bothered that he might be upset by so much over-familiarity, but it's the 'man of the people' connotations that irritate me, when he so clearly isn't anything of the sort.

MissAdventure Mon 02-Nov-20 20:30:32

I don't mind.
I'm not one of his friends. smile

Oopsminty Mon 02-Nov-20 19:57:38

People calling him 'Boris' makes me cringe, though.

He's not very keen on it either

None of his friends call him Boris

Honestly, in the total mess we are in- that is the least of my worries.

This is how I feel, too.

I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to being irrationally irritated by certain words, but 'kids' is so widespread, and in any case, in a speech by Johnson there are likely to be far more worrying things.

People calling him 'Boris' makes me cringe, though.

It doesn’t bother me one way or the other, there are more important to be upset about.

I'm quite happy to use 'kids', but if I was speaking formally in public I would say 'children' for under-16s and 'young people' for older teens or 20s. Surely if the Prime Minister is speaking in public, that is formal? As other posters have said, he should use formal language rather than slang, and get his hair sorted if he wants to be taken seriously. Maybe he doesn't...

We call our AC the kids if we are talking to someone about them, and certainly don’t see anything wrong with it, never thought of them as goats

Witzend Mon 22-Jun-20 22:05:49

I don’t mind ‘kids’, but I hate ‘grandkids’.
Utterly illogical, I know.

My Mum and MIL disliked the term kids. Interesting that my GSs use it quite often. It’s only a word FHS!

sarahh1968 Mon 22-Jun-20 15:53:39

Yes I cringe everytime too!!

PetitFromage Mon 22-Jun-20 15:36:27

The real question is how many does Boris have?

Bibbity Fri 19-Jun-20 00:20:47
