I know a number of people who learned in their 60s - usually when they were moving away from a big city with good public transport.
Your phrase 'I've always regretted...' is telling, and implies that you do want to drive. I m very sympathetic to those who don't like driving, but it seems that you wan t to give it a go.
I would ask around for recommendations and expect a sympathetic instructor; they are used to lots of similar requests. Discuss with them whether to head for an automatic. I have known people for whom it has made all the difference.
