Please please separate the games from discussion, am I the only one?

I think this may have come up before but I’m having a go anyway!

I know some of you love the games but I really think they should be in their own section.

13 this morning.

Am I alone?

Doodledog

*I think a like/dislike would be a lazy option to not join in the conversation? Mind you I can see the appeal as some prefer to read threads and not post.*

I agree. We already get so many comments from people who say that they never join in certain threads because people might disagree with them. This inevitably leads to 'the same voices' being heard on such threads, which is a shame, as a broader range of views would be more interesting for all concerned. A 'like/agree' button would make it worse, I think, as it would appear to give a voice to those who aren't prepared to contribute to the thread. Discussion needs contributions or it dies.

I don't think having an up or down arrow would stop people contributing to the thread. If they have something to say they will say it. But sometimes you just want to say 'I agree' or 'I don't agree' without adding anything further.

I don't know what has happened but at 15.08 there is only one games thread. I use the last hour facility and am pleased to say there are now lots of different threads.

Sago Wed 26-May-21 15:39:26

OP Here Thanks for all your input.
Some good suggestions.
My beef really is that on the format I use there are a large percentage of games threads and a lot of interesting topics are hidden away.
I think there are enough games and players to have a dedicated section.
Perhaps HQ will take note.

felice Wed 26-May-21 15:54:37

pleeeese, too much in one thread, when you are at the end of the your tether with important 'stuff', games are what you do not need.

welbeck Wed 26-May-21 16:06:41

i only select threads to read from the active list.
as the evening gets later, it gets filled with games.
having to think of section headings and go backwards and forwards to see if there have been any recent posts would be labourious.
and it excludes some people, as Manhatten has explained so well.
i think it would also benefit games fans to have a dedicated area.
Manhatten, could you offer to do it for GNHQ, they use volunteers i believe ?

BlueBelle Wed 26-May-21 16:21:15

They are a total pain
I ve got nothing against the games at all and for those that like them ....great....BUT they do need to be separated,, as the day goes by they increase and increased and by afternoon my newsfeed is suffocated with games threads
They take a whole plethora of moves to get rid of them (if you’re on the mobile site) and then they are back the next time someone makes
For those that say scroll on by if you have to scroll past twenty or more games and the number is growing through the day it is boring annoying and unnecessary

I ve been on here about six or seven years and HQ have never done anything asked for even when they start a thread asking what we would like changed !!!! So dont hold your breathe folks

grannyrebel7 Wed 26-May-21 16:22:13

Agree 100% Sago smile

Blinko Wed 26-May-21 16:25:05

This is a perennial gripe. GNHQ take absolutely no notice. I can only think it's an IT task they don't want to spend more money on, as a money making concern. So nothing happens. I think we'd all like a separate section for Games.

FannyCornforth Wed 26-May-21 16:25:48

welbeck re volunteers.
Although MN uses volunteers overnight to 'hide' troll posts; they have to be very careful as there was a serious data protection breech due to a work experience chap a while ago.

Newquay Wed 26-May-21 16:26:49

I don’t come on very often but when I don’t want to others news-not games! There are so many!

FannyCornforth Wed 26-May-21 16:27:35

Absolutely nothing will happen.
We actually have to be very grateful that we actually have Gransnet at all.

FannyCornforth Wed 26-May-21 16:28:18

Sorry - too many actuallies

kathsue Wed 26-May-21 16:33:38

Just counted up ... there are 13 games threads and 28 others. I'd like them separated.

ixion Wed 26-May-21 16:42:44

Is that on your Active list, Kathsue?
Currently I have 50 threads listed here and not one Games thread.
There are, for me, currently 23 threads in the Last Hour - again, not one is a Games thread?‍♀️

Callistemon Wed 26-May-21 16:50:47

14 Games threads have appeared on the Last Hour page since I last looked, when there were two.

ixion Wed 26-May-21 16:51:54

And again, - sorry about this - I have 106 threads on the Last Day list and zero Games.

I am happy to put up with one or maybe two Games Threads on my Last Hour/Day list, any others I hide. But nothing has appeared for me to action for a few days...

Callistemon Wed 26-May-21 16:53:24

19 Games threads on the Active list.

How did you manage that, Ixion, can you hide them?

ixion Wed 26-May-21 17:02:08

I'd like to think, Callistemon, that I am working with an intuitive site, which preempts my preferences in the light of previous actions?

At the risk of being an anorak, I will see how many I now get until, say, 9.00 tomorrow and post my results.
There again, if I'm not getting them, 'I don't know what I don't know'.
All I do is go to the mobile set up, find the offending thread and click on the arrow for 'hide this discussion' as previously taught. Perhaps this frightens its friends off.

Callistemon Wed 26-May-21 19:20:36

I did go on a Games thread not long ago
Perhaps that was a mistake!

Or I should try the mobile site (which I don't like) and try that.

BlueBelle Wed 26-May-21 19:29:17

Well I have 15 games threads on my active news feed so no idea how you get none ixion
I hope you can tell us what to do

Kim19 Wed 26-May-21 19:49:47

I love to dip into any games site which presents itself when the going gets rough or heated on any topic being debated here. Find it a decided bit of light relief and a welcome distraction.

ixion Wed 26-May-21 19:50:12

I'm sorry BlueBelle that you have all these.
As a relative newbie to this forum, I have just developed my own routine.
I use the desktop version, and go to the Last Hour, or Last Day, page and scroll quickly through the lot looking for any Games threads first, and 'clean up' before opening up topics that interest me.
As I said earlier, I switch to the mobile site, find the selfsame Games and follow the arrow and 'Hide'.
I then revert (through choice) to the desktop site, where they are no more.

I rarely, if ever, get more than one or two popping up?‍♀️

toscalily Wed 26-May-21 19:54:52

I agree Sago, it really is tedious having to scroll through so many games threads. I know you can hide them by going on the mobile site but it takes forever to delete them all and I prefer the desktop. Considering how many times this has come up you would think that GNHQ would be prepared and able to give the option of a sub-forum for games. As some else pointed out, even when they have asked for feedback on what would improve the site, nothing seems to change.

FannyCornforth Wed 26-May-21 19:58:21

It's not 'a site' - it's a thread Kim!
Sorry for telling you off, but the use of incorrect terminology doesn't help in these circumstances

BlueBelle Wed 26-May-21 20:09:44

I do all that ixion but in reverse order as I use the mobile site
And have to change to desktop hide the discussion then back to the mobile but then the next morning they are all back again??
