I'm not a football fan but am annoyed and confused that 2 of the England team have to isolate for 10 days as they've been in contact with one Scotland player who has tested positive for Covid, but the rest of the Scotland team are allowed to play.

Everyone is confused I think grin

There was video footage of the two hugging and kissing the covid chap but they were all touching each other, just like covid didn't even exist, especially not if you play footerball

Seems even Gareth Southgate doesn’t know the answer to that!

Public Health England have said just the 2 England players should self-isolate!!?? It may be me but I thought that goes against the rules that Boris and the scientists have been drumming into us and why Freedom Day was postponed. The 3 players concerned all play for Chelsea but that did not give them carte blanche to hug their team mate Gilmour as he is in a different team bubble to them at the Euros. My 2 youngest GD's will take part in their School Sports with no spectators next week. It will be held in the open air and the year group bubbles will compete between themselves. Their parents who live with them and take them to school and back 10 times a week cannot watch. Have a look at Wembley tonight and see how social distancing is being observed. angry

No idea!
Yes, the two England players hugged their team mate ( who happened to be playing for Scotland) but Gilmour also hugged his own manager and other players on the Scottish side afterwards.Either the two English players and all the Scottish players he hugged and stood close to, including his manager, should self isolate, or none of them.

Rosalyn69 Tue 22-Jun-21 14:49:04

Why not the Scottish team as well?

Callistemon Tue 22-Jun-21 14:56:40

I did think hugging might be a thing of the past, apart from hugging family.

And no elbow bumping either, thank you very much.

Callistemon Tue 22-Jun-21 14:57:44

In answer to the question, perhaps Public Health England have different rules Smileless

According to Public Health England, the reason the English players have to isolate as well as Gilmore is because the three of them had extended contact chatting for half an hour in the tunnel after the match. Hugs etc on the field are classed as brief outdoor contact. Players on the same team are in a bubble so contact between Scottish players on the pitch, while supposedly not encouraged, is not a concern.

I think each team is staying in a bubble for the whole of the tournament ie staying in a hotel away from any external contact and also being tested on match day before being allowed to play.

I’m not saying I agree with professional sport having so many special arrangements to enable them to compete but I guess school sports cannot be as controlled if spectators were there - lots of opportunities from transmission between families?

The Scottish team has travelled together on coaches though. Couldn’t they have picked up Covid from their teammate during that?

I would have thought so! Also they are staying in the same hotel, eating together, socialising etc in one bubble.

There must be some explanation but I doubt we will ever get the true facts behind the decision.

aren't there also a great number of uefa officials coming here without the usual restrictions ?

Yes apparently 2,500 FIFA, UEFA and other VIPs are coming to the Final at Wembley.

?

Gwyneth Tue 22-Jun-21 19:04:26

Why on earth do footballers have to hug each other anyway? If they behaved more like rugby teams this probably wouldn’t have happened. On an aside here I really think they ought to introduce the ‘sin bin’ for dissent. Behaviour towards referees and officials is disgraceful and a terrible example to young football players.

Isnt the rugby scrum one big hug????confused

Gwyneth Tue 22-Jun-21 19:55:37

Good point May7 but possibly less facial contact!!!

Well, perhaps you could describe it as a group hug grin ?

grandma60 Tue 22-Jun-21 20:29:08

My grandson aged 12 has to isolate as someone in his school bubble has covid. There are 28 in the bubble and he doesn't know this person.

I’m fed up with sports and all the exceptions they get angry

sodapop Wed 23-Jun-21 08:24:14

There seem to be lots of exceptions made for football, it's officials and fans. It's a travesty when parents are not allowed to attend a school sports day.
The government excuse about extra fans allowed at Wembley because its a test is a joke.

Sparklefizz Wed 23-Jun-21 08:29:58

Yes, I just heard that reason given on BBC Breakfast. ("The government excuse about extra fans allowed at Wembley because its a test is a joke.")

Have they taken the contact details of every single fan at Wembley in order to follow up for their test??? I think not.

Lin52 Wed 23-Jun-21 08:43:51

Think you’ll find the blackmail used by UEFA, to strip UK of Euro 2020 final unless 2500 foreign vips are spared quarantine, had a lot to do with it, well I think the Gov, should have said no, but huge amounts of money involved, and can you image the spoilt fans outraged at being denied this. Football at this level has too much power, which is abused by the governing bodies of it.

How do you think the fans got their tickets? Online!

They have contact details for every group.

Smileless2012 Wed 23-Jun-21 11:01:26

That could be the reason Callistemon. Doesn't make sense to me but that said a lot of the rules and regulations when it comes to Covid don't make sense either.
