Just had my hair cut

I came back from the hairdressers yesterday in tears after it was pointed out to me that my hair was thinning badly on the top. Told it was aging although only 65 . I asked whether it might be because I have been ill over last few months having been in hospital twice. No was the stern reply it's age.
To add a further insult I was charged more than usual because she is a senior stylist !

I'm glad I'm not the only one not enjoying going to the hairdresser. It's not a pleasant experience. Before I moved house I had finally found a hairdresser I felt comfortable with but now have a new one and she has glary lighted mirrors so I have to keep my eyes shut to avoid migraine. She is also a very OTT personality. Pre pandemic, she wanted to hug everyone and I don't like hugging acquaintances.

My grandson only trusts one barber so while with him one day I asked the man if he did womens hair, too?
He was surprised but said he could, and he did cut mine, and it took a lot less time and hassle than at the hairdressers and he asked how I'd like it and did it just right!! For a helluva lot less, too!

It's taken me a very long time to become 'huggable' and then only to certain people, close friends and family know why!
If you're uncomfortable hugging or being hugged, do let people know, just tell them straight that you'd rather they just greet you as they'd greet a postman or binman with a simple 'hi', for example!
Hunni, never be pressured into physical contact if it's not your thing but don't feel guilty about it either, as we're not all lovey-dovey, physical hugging care bears!!
Go forth and do not hug.

I love going to my hairdresser my next appointment is this Saturday the 3rd I am off to my DDs 50th birthday celebrations and I just know she will help me feel my best.

I love going. Not that bothered about the washing and cutting bit but once she starts the blowdrying and final tweaking with little scissors, I could fall asleep, I'm so relaxed.

I hate it - I would rather go to the dentist. They don't listen, they are scissor happy and I seldom get what I ask for even though I am very articulate and use a lot of hand signals. I have even taken photos in and they still get it wrong. I am so traumatised by the end of it all that when she asks if it's OK I just say 'yes' so I can make a quick exit.

I hate it too. I have a lovely man who used to work the cruise ships do it now and it is less of a trauma

he also just talks about how tired he is rather than asking me about myself which helps

How rude and tactless Jaffacake. My hair is thinning. When I point it out my hairdresser tells me I look fine.

Thanks Aveline. I did wonder. I use a little - it helps to keep it in place but I prefer a natural look. I don't let the hairdresser style it too much.

Well don't go back to that stylist! I lost a lot of hair when I had a hysterectomy and again when a had a lung problem which required vast amounts of antibiotic. Your stylist was talking hurtful nonsense.

I get a lovely cut from the young woman who does my hair so I keep going. However, the owner brings her dog to work. The dog barks at passers by which is annoying because I like to be peaceful & enjoy the experience.
I love dogs but I wish my local salon could be more relaxing.

Having to have a backwards wash has left me with a sore neck 10 days on and I received a rather heavy unasked for head massage. I just wish there was an option for a forwards wash, particularly for older people and of course I can ask not to be massaged again. To add to the problems the hairdresser just loved my now flowing locks and only cut off a very small amount, because of the blow dry I didn't realise how little had gone until I wash it myself.

Jaffacake that was very unkind. Your health can affect your hair and she should have recommended styles and perhaps treatments to help disguise the fact it is thinning. Perhaps a course of vitamins and minerals may help - there are several makes which do a Skin, Hair and Nails formula.

It’s likely that your hairdresser has a FB page. Make your feelings known there. What have you got to loose? It’s not as if your going back there is it.

I hate it,i can`t stand looking in mirrors at the best of times,but to sit there for a good twenty minutes does my head in.

jaffacake So sorry to hear how you were treated. No excuse. I am losing hair badly since a 4 month period of stress last year, not Covid-related, but Covid certainly added to it.

Stress plays a large part in hair loss.

lulu I have had to ask for a forwards wash for years since a bad car accident gave me a neck injury. I kneel on the chair or stand, whichever feels most comfortable, and lean forwards with a towel over my face. It's perfectly possible.

I see a different hairdresser now and wash my hair myself in the shower and drive a very short drive with wet hair. No problems.

I just have a dry cut (they wet it a bit) and then beat a hasty retreat to wash it myself at home. It’s probably the shortest possible time in the hairdresser’s, but even that is unpleasant. It’s a relief to see that so many others hate the experience.

The only hairdressers I liked going to was a Chinese hairdresser in Shanghai, who was admittedly British trained. He was a real craftsman and his goal was for me to be happy with my cut. He would cut and recut until I was happy. The hairwash area was darkened and after the hairwash, a head massage. I once had to wait at the hairwash station and had such an amazing massage I was nearly asleep.

Other than that, I hate it. The only good hairdresser I've found in my area works alone but juggles customers so every visit takes 2 or 3 hours.

I hate the chat, the mirrors, the way they dry it and I frequently hate the end result too. AND it costs a fortune.

I hate the hairdressers as I have thin hair and feel embarrassed.

I have found a good mobile hairdresser but this time he has gone mad. I always wear it short, but he has given me a short back and sides. I could scream and it will be weeks before it is passable again.

There must surely be a market out there for a hairdressers for gransnetters. Somewhere more peaceful, where you can talk if you want...or not. Where you can say, look, don't bother with all the chemicals/rear view mirrors/blowdrying milarky.

Somewhere with comfy wash basins and a foot stool so you can put your feet up.

Hairdressers who understand that being over 50 doesn't mean everyone wants to look like Mary Berry....much as I love Mary Berry and like her look, I want to look like me. Me with better hair.

Can we please have gardening magazines.

Where they understand that when you're not able to wear your glasses you can't see in the mirror anyway. Oh, and sometimes the lack of glasses makes your hearing not work (or is that just me).

Used to love the glamour of the hair dressers. Now it's such a bore I do it myself.

I enjoy a visit to my hairdresser. The apprentice who shampoos my hair does a lovely scalp massage - only wish it could last longer!

My hairdresser retired recently and I was devastated. I didn’t think anyone would cut my hair quite as well again. Then my niece introduced me to her hairdresser who has a salon in our village that I never knew was there. She is the same age as my DD but my goodness she knows her stuff and is very friendly and professional. Not cheap but I certainly get what I pay for. She gives up a day of her week to do free hairdressing at a local hospice too, I’m told. The worst experience I had at a hairdressers was in Jermyn Street in the sixties where I went because my regular hairdresser, who had run a small branch of the same salon, had transferred there. He was always lovely, but what an awful, stuck up, condescending shower the other staff were. I couldn’t wait to get out of there and I never went back.
