Do we still grow British apples.

I do my grocery shopping in all the usual places, but can’t seem to find British Apples. I think it is preposterous that I can buy apples from Brazil, Chile, South Africa and other countries but not at my local stores. I am mainly thinking of the air miles and it saddens me because I am refusing to buy foreign apples or for that matter any fruit with the possible exception of bananas because they usually come on large cargo ships.

AIBU, or am I not seeing something obvious that more business savvy people would know. ?

Well let’s face! She’s mad! We should be producing and consuming more of our own produce. I have said so for years long before Brexit or Covid, we should be more self reliant.

I agree. I can’t imagine why should we need to import so much salad stuff from the Netherlands - a small country with virtually the same climate. It’s not the same as ditto from rather warmer Spain.
I do wonder whether potential NIMBY objections to miles of polytunnels are one reason. Even parts of southern Spain have huge swathes of these.

There are miles of polytunnels in Herefordshire Witzend!

Oh yes and can’t wait for my visit to East Sussex to buy them fresh.

Have you visited East Sussex or parts of Kent, Thanet in particular, you will see miles of polytunnels.

If the Netherlands can produce salad products cheaper than us why not buy them? We have products they need that we can grow better than they can, Field crops like wheat and barley.

We were exporting grain to Europe in the Roman period (and hunting dogs and cloaks). Although I think the last two do not feature very highly in international trade these days.

Made a compote with pears from the garden today, so lovely, fragranced, unlike shop bought ones that have no flavour or fragrance. Sadly our apples and quinces haven’t given a good yield this year. I like nothing more than a cox or a russet.
We bought some on a car boot sale recently where a stall holder was obvs selling fruit and veg from his garden or allotment, also had cooking apples so I made a crumble.
Feeling hungry now.

Well, yes, of course we do. Just look at the number of cider farms we have ?

I was going to say - we have plenty of cider apples around!

No apples on our trees this year. ☹

My trees were loaded with apples this year. I had so many I was giving them away to all and sundry, including my Sainsburys delivery driver.
I offered some for free on Facebook but had no takers.
Such a shame as they were delicious.
I had a mixture of Discovery, Gala and Howgate Wonder, some of the latter being the size of cannonballs.

Liz Truss was very excited about the possibility of selling British apples to India - anyone else think that’s mad?

No more ridiculous than us buying their fruit surely. Do they even grow apples.

LadyGracie Sat 26-Oct-24 08:57:21

Plenty of British apples available here in S Wales, they don't taste like they used too.

Can you send some to north Scotland? Really miss nice apples

Norah Sat 26-Oct-24 14:24:26

Yes, British apples are still grown.

Our apple trees are doing well.

We've a refrigerator in my husbands shop, full of our apples.

I bought some this morning grown in Kent. Not a variety I know, but they are lovely. My father liked Russet apples. I haven’t seen any for ages. The estate I live on is built partly on an old farm and part of the orchard was incorporated into the landscaping. One of the old varieties that has been identified is Pitmaston Pineapple. Lovely mellow flesh but I’m not sure where the pineapple comes in. Another is a variety not unlike a Jonathan but the flesh is red. They are all free for the taking - if you can reach them, or hope for windfalls!

We have never managed to grow apples in our garden despite it was originally an orchard. We think the previous owners poisoned the soil in some way as the NDNs on either side grow beautiful apples.

The local organic greengrocers sometimes has some of the less well known varieties.

Tesco have British apples on offer at the moment for 99p a bag minimum of 5, I bought some yesterday they are did grown in Herefordshire.by J.Cox.
I can see the original post is from 2021,I know with everything going on at that time, they were have problems with recruiting pickers.

I've just picked apples in our garden and they are delicious. I don't even remember the name if them because we planted the tree years ago.And the harvest varies from year to year. But it makes me realise how tasteless a lot of supermarket apples are.And I wish they sold more English apples of different varieties.

How many of these are you familiar with?
Apologies, I've no source (apple?🤭) for this poster.

JamesandJon33 Sat 26-Oct-24 19:22:53

We had a farm near our school. 6d and they would fill your bike basket with Worcester apples.
