Food deliveries by unmasked drivers

I'm quite cross and concerned. S*****s have been delivering our shopping and mostly they have done a sterling job. On Friday the driver arrived with no mask. On being politely asked to wear one he refused so we declined the delivery. Sainsbury now say they cannot guarantee a masked delivery driver. We are vulnerable ?

Crikey, I have never wiped my groceries down, just put them away, wash my hands and wash down the worktop I stood them on.
I didn’t realise people still called themselves senior citizens either.
I must be out of touch.

Not surprised this is unnecessary I did it once back in 2020 and decided it was a total waste of time

As a Senior citizen I keep several masks on a cabinet near my door. Bring in your groceries, wipe each item down with disinfectant or Lysol wipe and once finished putting everything in place immediately wash your hands with a antibacterial soap, there's only so much we can do.

Do wear a mask yourself if you feel better that way, but drivers have done above and beyond their job all through the pandemic. Even at the beginning when nobody would have ventured out like that, they were there to keep us fed. Let’s make their life a little easier now!

I'm with the vast majority today - why should these poor hard working delivery drivers wear a mask outdoors in the fresh air?And as for refusing an order somebody has gone to the trouble of picking & packing...? What happened next? Did she order from elsewhere & get a signed assurance a mask would be worn in the garden, or maybe she went shopping?! Or just went hungry? Just how did she manage for groceries that week? We need to know...

Some very interesting comments in this thread, I'm waiting & all agog to see what OP has to say about them all. Does she now consider that she may perhaps be being just a tad unreasonable??

How very childish, that is not clever or funny, I thought we left the School playground years ago.
I do not agree at all with OP actions but pathetic insults do not put you in a good light.

Nemo's Mum : Omicron is our friend! By being both very infectious and mild, it has driven out Delta and all previous variants of SARS-CoV-2, and will infect us all, thus immunising us to any possible more serious variants.
I hadn't heard about this in so many words. Can you please refer us to your source? I have heard that the Delta variant is still around and responsible for some of the patients in ICUs.

Ours always wears a mask, they pile it as helpfully as they can, except 1 driver from M……..’s, who stands and plays with his phone

When I was pinged and was self isolating the driver bagged up my items from the trays on the truck and put the bags on the doorstep. Let them know you're self isolating and do this perhaps

Coco51 Tue 25-Jan-22 13:54:06

You can send a message on your order to say that you are CEvulnerable and ask the driver to stand away while you pick up. I fully understand your anxieties. My OH wears a mast and gloves while picking up, but our Ocado and Amazon drivers are wearing masks. We don’t like how fast the restrictions are being lifted so are just working for our own safety. Just heard from my cousin in Australia that they are in full lockdown again, so why is our Govt. so blasé?

I don't see a problem I'm vulnerable , they don't pack my shopping and they don't enter my home they are not obliged to wear a mask outdoors

No it hasn't been over for a while. If you've been behaving as if it has then you have been ignoring official advice and regulations.

Quite a few delivery drivers don’t wear masks but you can still keep yourself safe. When they knock on the door ask them to stand back before opening it. Then ask them to decant in to the bags/ boxes you have left outside and knock when it’s done. Simple.

I am having a delivery from S as I Type. I ticked we were vulnerable, left bags out, driver has come mask less admittedly, put goods in bags, smiled and waved as I watched from the window, and now left. No problem

Crikey! Unless I was physically unable to do so I wouldn’t expect the driver to unload the shopping for me. I really don’t think we should expect that of them.

What has been over for a while? Have I missed something? Last time I looked we were still in a pandemic but trying to be sensible.

I'm seriously at a loss to understand your comment.
Are you actually saying you refused a supermarket delivery because the driver was not wearing a mask?
Do you even want life to return to some sense of normality, or do you prefer to remain utterly terrified, even in your own home
Presumably, you are double jabbed and boosted, and YOU might even have been wearing a mask to accept this delivery.
You may describe yourself as 'vulnerable', but you now also want other people to take steps to protect YOUR health.
Goodness me, you really need to get a grip on this, otherwise, the rest of your life will be so stressful.
Please turn off the TV, don't read the newspapers and try to live, and enjoy the rest of your life, or surely you might as well be dead already.

This is sad really as your anxiety levels must be sky high. Poor delivery driver who is only trying to do his/her job. I would say try some relaxation exercises.

Relaxation exercises aren’t magically going to change the fact that you’re clinically vulnerable.

Quite!

I am CEV and to start with it was anxiety inducing. But as time has progressed, I've become more pragmatic and a little more relaxed, taking precautions where I can and reading up on the scientific and 'technical' details... and then shelving the worries.

I have also been in fairly close contact (in an enclosed space) with someone who tested positive (she didn't wear a mask, I did) - but I didn't catch the virus. I just kept the distance, didn't touch my face and washed my hands after the encounter. This has added to my confidence.

But we're all different. I'm fairly relaxed about it all now - but won't judge people who don't feel the same as me. If you are vulnerable, you have simply got to be more cautious than people who aren't, and I think it's quite unkind to mock them or laugh at their anxiety.

Mine haven’t worn masks for a while. When my delivery came yesterday I remarked I hadn’t seen him for a while and he told me he’d been off with Covid, it transpired he’d not been vaccinated either. As he placed my shopping inside the door I’d opened as he came up the path while I retreated inside, took his photo then retreated at least 2 metres up the path before I came to the door and we had our conversation I’m not in the slightest bit concerned even though I’m clinically extremely vulnerable. Most deliveries can be left on the doorstep if you indicate this on your order. I think we all have responsibility for ourself-I’ll do what I need to do to keep safe and won’t expect others to carry on with measures that will soon be abandoned

Daisend1 Tue 25-Jan-22 12:44:32

My Iceland delivery WAS in Iceland bags.No charge was made for these bags. These bags CAN be recycled.
Instructions can be left for driver where delivery is to be placed. This avoids any personal contact.

My step-father has become overly anxious in his fear of Covid. He leaves a note on the door with instruction to put the groceries in his car boot which he leaves open.
May I suggest you get some crates which you put out for the driver to leave your food in. When he has gone, you can get the stuff indoors without fear of infection. You may be being unreasonable about this issue but you are far from alone.
My son-in-law was a delivery driver and he was forever amazed at how many customers would breathe all over him, handle the crates and then tell him as he went to leave, that they had just had a positive result and were isolating. He has a vulnerable wife and it was really thoughtless of his customers.
