Billboard advert - what do you think?

I'm wondering how others feel about this billboard advert in our local supermarket car park please? Am I over-reacting because I don't like the example it sets to our grandchildren?

Why it doesn't float over your head, even if you think it does.

Alegrias I'm sure they know better than I do, and I am very sure that all of us are influenced by at least some ads at some point, but I think that ads are more likely to influence people who are already engaged with a particular product - if you already drink fizzy drinks you might try a new one you see in an ad, or a new hair product that appears to be better than the one you already use. The fact that people remember jingles is neither here nor there. I can remember countless Coca Cola ads but have never drunk Coke. The ad for Smash with the giggling aliens used to crack me up but I never ate Smash (that I know of).

I was having dinner with friends the other evening, and one of the guests made a familiar statement. "I am not influenced by advertising," she said.

Why it doesn't float over your head, even if you think it does. smile

Witzend, I agree with you. As for it fulfilling its purpose, I might remember the picture and wording, but the name of the business would float right over my head, as does most advertising.
Like you, bad grammar annoys me much more. A local car sales company regularly posts "car's and van's" for sale, on our local Facebook page, and it irritates intensely. I have to resist the urge to send them a message about it, and grit my teeth.

A joke it may be but very childish and not even a good pun!

yggdrasil Sat 29-Jan-22 13:31:30

If your grandchildren don't get the joke, no harm done. If they do, you are too late to worry aout it :-)

Coastpath Sat 29-Jan-22 10:51:12

Well that poster is not as shocking as learning that Roger Lloyd Pack was a porn star!

Witzend Sat 29-Jan-22 10:46:19

I can’t say it particularly bothers me. I will admit to getting more wound up over printed signs or notices with spelling mistakes, or apostrophes either missing or misused.
But then I’m a grumpy old pedant who can safely be ignored. ?

Alegrias1 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:39:11

What are they trying to sell?

Beer? Yarn? Pompoms?

harrigran Sat 29-Jan-22 10:10:30

Yes we are talking about the words but I don't have a clue what they are trying to sell. Brain switched off after seeing flock.
Absolute rubbish like memes and Tik Tok.

GeorgyGirl Sat 29-Jan-22 10:03:53

It is in very bad taste, another sign of the times.

Mollygo Sat 29-Jan-22 09:57:24

I don’t like it, but I’d certainly employ their publicity people. It got 86 posters just on GN talking about it, and that’s what publicity is about.

Georgesgran Sat 29-Jan-22 09:18:02

I suppose any publicity, good or bad means the Ad has done it’s job. I’m sure the KFC ad says ‘what the cluck’ - along similar lines, but I’m not keen on ‘almost’ swear words used to attract attention.

Yogamum Fri 28-Jan-22 23:28:29

Very crass. Not the sort of company I’d like to do business with. I’m sure they could do something else to tie in to lambs if they really wanted to. But this is just so unprofessional. Does not inspire me to use their services.

Frangipan Fri 28-Jan-22 22:54:46

I had the same reaction as you! I actually think it is disgusting and a blatant lowering of moral standards.
Is it meant to be funny or something????

Cherrytree59 Fri 28-Jan-22 19:43:29

I think the advertising team have fulfilled their brief. ?

They or the company in question, don't care if you like or hate it (Marmite).

They just need you to remember it.
If in the future, you or someone you know requires this type of service then Lamb and their ad will probably spring to mind.

Then it's just a matter of a quick Google and voila!
Job done as they say.

It is being discussed here on Social media
So win win for the company.

TheOtherCatsMother Fri 28-Jan-22 19:12:17

Sorry I think that is funny.

But then I don't have to try and answer any awkward questions.

SachaMac Fri 28-Jan-22 19:01:32

The ad is a bit lacking in imagination, I don’t like the play on the ‘f’ word but I suppose it’s got people talking as it did for French Connection, that all seems a bit tired & dated now. I hate to hear that or even worse the ‘c’ word being thrown into conversation just for the Hell of it as it seems to be more and more now.
FannyI know the Cock Inn well, had some nice meals there, lovely garden too smile

Pudding123 Fri 28-Jan-22 17:27:48

Hate it...I would complain.

JdotJ Fri 28-Jan-22 17:07:44

Common

sandelf Fri 28-Jan-22 16:50:52

Just don't like the advert - would not make me choose them.

Musicgirl Fri 28-Jan-22 16:50:34

I don’t like it or find it funny at all, simply childish in the way a six year old might shout out “knickers,” thinking it hilarious. It reminds me of the French Connection UK initials. They have ceased trading, thankfully. I detest swearing in any form and find the seemingly ubiquitous use of the f word and even the c word in far too many tv programmes or books offensive. We are told that this is the way people speak nowadays. Well, I don’t and nor do most people l know.

Applegran Fri 28-Jan-22 16:06:57

If you don't like this advertisement - and I can see why you don't - how about complaining to head office of the supermarket? And getting a few friends to complain too? when I don't like something or feel strongly about something, I find it is easy to talk (or on a bad day to rant) about it to other people, and am working on the idea that I can instead pick some issues and do something, however small, about them.

montymops Fri 28-Jan-22 14:58:05

Can’t say it bothers me - there are also quite a few pubs called The Cock - we have a very good one Near here with excellent food- never really thought about the name. It certainly wouldn’t bother my grandchildren - the teenagers might snigger but probably not - the younger ones wouldn’t give it a second look.

Rosina Fri 28-Jan-22 14:44:54

FannyCornforth I agree about 'FCUK'; I stood in a shop with another woman of about my age and we were both looking at T shirts, as it turned out for our Grandsons. She said much as she liked the T shirt she wasn't prepared to buy something with that logo, and neither was I. The ad is pretty silly too - doesn't bother me too much but not necessary - also just another example of aggressive 'in your face' shouty type advertising.

FannyCornforth Fri 28-Jan-22 14:39:15

I still think that my slogan is better! smile
