Is a Brit entitled to an opinion ...

(220 Posts)

Imagine a Brit who goes to live abroad, lets say, France, as a teenager on a short work placement. And then stays for much longer, getting married to a local, becoming fluent in the language, getting local qualifications, having children and working locally. Gets completely integrated and accepted. Then after retirement, goes back to UK to help with elderly parents, but retains a property and spends a lot of time back in France, as their main family is there, and friends- their whole life actually, in so many ways- and having gained French nationality over 50 years ago.

Now does that Brit give up any right to have an opinion about what is happening in France, where they have spent all their adult life- because they have temporarily returned to Britain- and that because they are so disappointed to see things changing for the worse back in wherever they so admired and loved- actually more than the UK in so many ways.

A simple open question.

The point of this thread is OP having a dig.

Not at all. Some of you have been having a dig at me for
y e a r s.

A simple explanation here.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 04-Mar-22 13:16:53

So what exactly is the point, given the criticism you have received for the negative views you have repeatedly voiced about the UK?

Mamie Fri 04-Mar-22 13:18:16

I think Kali2 that I would say that it is easier to get your point across if you present it calmly and avoid showing too much anger and emotion in your writing. I don't claim to get this right all the time by any means, but I do try.

That’s not true. If she voices an opinion it’s because she loves this country and loved the values it used to have pre brexit. As do I.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 04-Mar-22 13:35:42

I know you’re a fan Maybee but I have to disagree with your analysis. It’s certainly not the way the comments come across to me. I don’t like seeing my country criticised by someone who has chosen to live elsewhere, nor do I like being called a Brit.

Mamie Fri 04-Mar-22 13:43:49

So just out of interest Germanshephersmum is it only British people living abroad who can't criticise or is nobody allowed to criticise a country in which they do not live? That might stop quite a lot of Gransnet threads?

My dd has lived very happily in Europe for over 15 years with no intention to return. Since Brexit, which none of us voted fir, she began to be quite critical of the UK. I agree with a lot she says, yet somehow resent her criticism too. It can be quite awkward sometimes.

As a matter of fact I don’t ? I was looking for someone else and there it was.
The problem that some posters have go back a long way.
Report if you wish. Not bothered, I’m used to it now ?

Some posts are so rude they stick in your mind.

Or, if you have been driven off Gransnet by a personal battering from a poster then it does tend to stay in the memory.
I was innocent and naive then.

No, you're just fine Mamie

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 04-Mar-22 14:12:24

No, of course the country can be criticised, as can any other, but the amount of criticism by this particular poster grates.

That was a coincidence.

You going to pick a fight with Prof Currie?

Context is all. He thinks we're lazy, too.

I’m not a Brit. It’s derogatory in the same was that calling folks Frogs, Gerries , Ities, chinks and more is

I’m puzzled that kali2 remains determined to remain centre stage, drawing endless attention to her life experience. It’s rather self absorbed especially when presenting self as a victim

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 04-Mar-22 14:16:58

And telling us how she’s off to go foraging in the mountains with her many ‘young friends’.

Not the kindest of opening posts !

Interesting that you should find that, Meryl in view of the fact that a ew years later some people were rushing to defend our high covid death rate by blaming it on the UK's 'obesity problem'. Same problem, just more politely named.

Callistemon21 Fri 04-Mar-22 14:25:50

It would be funny if it wasn't so rude and, quite frankly, ironic.

Absolutely and totally, I agree. However, this has become very difficult, as a small group here have attacked me every single time. Similar opinions have been posted by others, and strong discussion ensued. But I do believe, and I honestly thing I am correct here- that I am the only poster who has been personally attacked for not 'being a proper British citizen' and for not having a right to said views on what is happening. currently to the UK. Being constantly attacked, and each and every post turning to 'ah but what about your country' - with people digging the internet to find anything negative to say about it, despite knowing very little about it, bar visiting for a holiday once, or studying there for a short time yonks ago- makes it difficult to keep a low and calm tone. I am sure you can understand this.

My goodness, so ComeonEileen comes from the blue, from nowhere at all to post this she dug up from years and years ago. This was of course a quote from a newspaper article- and not my words at all. Just incredible.

Oh dear, how hilarious. Why shouldn't I go foraging- and why should I have no young friends? How low can you get Germansheperdsmum? Really. I mean this is actually hilarious. Blimey!

I'm British living in France and have found things to criticise and praise in both countries. Maybe ' comment on ' would be better than criticise. I think we are entitled to express our thoughts on here.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 04-Mar-22 14:38:18

Glad you find my comment hilarious. I find your comments on my country anything but.
