Do you remember when Rodney took Cassandra out cruising in it?
Good Morning Wednesday 13th May 2026
Being asked for an honest opinion
To be really irritated by chefs over praising their own food?
I enjoyed watching the film ‘Grease’ on Sunday afternoon - it brought back memories of a lovely time in my life. I was concerned to find that the following day, according to several newspapers there was a storm of protest on Twitter calling the film misogynistic and all manner of other accusations - ultimately calling for it to be banned from transmission on TV. Is this what we’ve come to ?

I suspect that teens today would watch it for a bit & give up on it or take is as a bit of social history. It does send an horrific message about relationships and stereotypes. But so do many films & musicals that are" of their time"! It is not being a ' fun sponge' to discuss films & TV programmes. That is normal in our fun loving family!
I sometimes squirm when I listen to lyrics of many songs I loved as a teen. My teen DGCs just laugh at them!
As far as I can see they are much more aware of equalities and are quite confident to be who they want.
We took the DGCs to see a local amateur production of Spamalot last night...now that has some " of its time" scenarios!
DGD1 with various piercings, DGS1 with a pearl necklace over his sweatshirt and a bracelet, DGD in her " vintage" i.e. charity shop outfit & DGS2 in his Infant Shool leavers hoodie..( he is nearly 10). They might say that Sandy had been liberated from her repressive family and was at last expressing her true self

I had one in red. A Trotters 3 wheel van, I mean.
As for Grease, it's a great film. I expect every single film/tv programme ever made has something about it which this loony lot would want to criticise.
did you ever tip it?
I looked at some of the comments on twitter and it’s not exactly the storm of protest some of the papers made it out to be, but the overwhelming majority wanted the film, as well as others of its’ ilk, banned forever. I get the feeling that there are a lot of people out there who actually go looking for something to complain about. The cancel culture is really worrying as there doesn’t seem to be any perspective, or even common sense applied.

Incidentally, I don't know how or why, but we have a Trotters 3 wheeler van around here.
One christmas it went flying past with all blow up dolls in the back.

One of the best programmes ever.
Beautifully written.

Blossoming
The Exorcist came out around the same time Callistemon and that seems pretty tame now too!
Does it?
I saw it at Cradley Heath flea pit when I was 14.
It scared me stupid.
There’s no way I could watch it again.
But then I’m a terrible scaredy cat nervous Nelly.
It was Psycho which terrified me
This thread has made me laugh, especially the toxic wokeflakes being a breakfast cereal
As others say, lots of old films were of their time. I don't think they need to be banned either. Apparently only fools and horses is one that gets regular criticism off the world has gone mad toxic wokeflake pc brigade
which is a shame as that was just of its time too
My first thought back in the day was "How old are these students meant to be?" Wholesale miscasting imo. Rizzo has the best storyline regarding misogyny.
One of my favourite films.
? I watched it at the weekend singing along! DH and I have had a few rough weeks and it made us laugh out loud!
“Keep your filthy paws off my silky drawers”!!

I don’t know if you have deliberately chosen to misinterpret my post but either way, you certainly have.
If you read the OP correctly it asks the question is this what we’ve come to
To which I replied: YES IT IS, BUT YOU HAVE TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT IT WHEREVER/WHENEVER YOU CAN
Meaning: I totally 100% agree with the OP.
Can’t stand Grease, apart from Rizzo ♥️
When I was at school in the 80s, we did a production of it! Unbelievable now.
I was supposed to play Rizzo, but I dropped out because the lad playing Danny was a tit and far too fat
Interestingly (to me) Sandy’s makeover is unusual in that her before hair is straight, and her after hair is curly.
It’s usually t’other way round.

Yes, I agree completely
We'll be spending all of our time calling out TV programmes, songs (some of the present ones are horrifically misogynistic!)
Grease didnt exactly show men in the best light, either.

I’m afraid it is. ? But, you have to speak out against it wherever/ whenever you can.
It maybe misogynistic, but it is also fun, enjoyable, romantic and very entertaining, it was also set in the 50's.
Why should it be called out, honestly I think people should lighten up.
I love this film too.
When oldest son worked in a school in Kuwait they put this on as their annual production.
I could never understand how it was accepted. But maybe because they had a lot of American students.
I can think of quite a few movies which are reflections of the times and eras they were produced in or the eras they were intended to reflect - Grease is a perfect example as a movie made in the seventies about life in the fifties. The other one that springs to mind is American Graffiti. They’re a kind of social document which hopefully makes us reflect on the ways in which things have changed for the better. My fear is that we’re in danger of denying future generations the same opportunity for reflection because we’re becoming so obsessed with cancelling anything which might cause offence.

I’d better stop wearing my make up then Blossoming. And I’ve just bought a new eyeliner too!
?
... go for it you tiger (ess)
Anyway, I don’t really think she was tarty, just Super Sexy
Sara although it came out in 1978? it was set in the late 1950s when we all dressed as Sandy did at the start, nice full-skirted dresses, cardigans sometimes even white gloves ? for church.
Anyone who dressed in skin-tight leather leggings would have been thought of as tarty.
It wasn't until we found C and A that we abandoned the nice dresses our mothers chose for us as young teenagers!
Oh I love a good horror film.
