I am confused........

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???

I see that the usual suspects are out and about on a thread which mentions the Platinum Jubilee...
No point in offering an opinion here, there's no true sense of debate.

Your comment - Sorry love is just so condescending ?

As this appeared right after my posts I'll assume you mean me. If you want to debate things, this is where to do it.

If you want to chat about how lovely everything is, there's the "enjoying the Jubilee" thread, which republicans et al seem to be avoiding so you can all have a lovely time there. Because we have manners, unlike the rampant royalists who will brook no disagreement with their opinions.

Aye.

And telling us to give up on equality is not?

Modompodom Thu 02-Jun-22 15:17:21

I live in one of the most deprived areas of London, and looking at the queues of shoppers with their trollies piled high with food and booze, I don't see much belt-tightening here. We are having a very low-key family Jubilee celebration in the garden tomorrow. No bah humbug here.

Bridgeit Thu 02-Jun-22 15:18:09

No equality anywhere in the world

Ach, we'll just give up then.

I wonder how much the jubilee will cost the tax payer? Care to hazard a guess anyone?

betts Thu 02-Jun-22 16:13:00

From where I sit it looks like an excuse for a dress-up party. They are always fun.

red1 Thu 02-Jun-22 16:19:54

i like the queen, but in principal not a royalist. They are the biggest dole dodgers with property/ land everwhere. we have all been and continue to be duped.

grannygranby Thu 02-Jun-22 16:26:15

I totally agree. They have chosen the day and month of the coronation 69 years ago. And as you say she took on the responsibility when her father died on 6 feb . And they keep saying it is 70 years since she was crowned.just irritating do they think we can’t count?

No humbug here either.
But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat, are celebrating the life of a woman who owns a million pound hat, a £25 million pound chair and 30 Palaces and a £16 billion jewel collection.

Bread and circuses come to mind.

Abso-blooming-lutely,,, and I am being as polite as I can.

The BBC are not even showing the 'celebrations' the parades etc... and yet we had a full day coverage of Diana's funeral? What is the BBC doing? they can pay Zoe Ball £1.13 million!! a year and not put the celebrations on TV for the majority of people who can't get there and are royalists ... I am not a royalist but this is insulting to the majority that are.

I haven't read all the thread, my blood pressure won't let me!

Long live the queen.

Long live the revolution!

I just heard Andrew has tested positive for covid. How convenient terrible.

^do wonder how many on here making their trifle and putting out the bunting etc. were amongst those howling for her blood back at the time of the death of Diane!!!!^

What an odd thing to wonder. Perhaps you could take a headcount.

I’ll start. So far I’ve got one flag on a stick stuck in a plant pot in my front yard, and I might yet have a go at that trifle if I can find some unseasonal mixed peel, but I have never in my life howled for anyone’s blood. Or for anything else, for that matter.

What’s the AIBU, by the way?

I don't think its an odd thing to wonder at all!

What I do wonder is why you would want mixed peel in a trifle?

grin

What I do wonder is why you would want mixed peel in a trifle?

For the jewelled chocolate bark
50g/1¾oz mixed peel
1 tbsp caster sugar (optional)
200g/7oz white chocolate, broken into pieces

Good grief! what's wrong with Birds custard and a few hundreds and thousands!! ?? grin

So. HM has lived 96 Years. She has never had to go hungry, worry about money, been homeless, do housework, cope with wartime rations,. She has doctors on hand instead of waiting months for an operation.
All these celebrations are to distract the population from the state this country is in.

My son tells me that his village had £2000 grant to stage a park picnic. They didn’t need it!

Keffie12 Thu 02-Jun-22 17:39:31

I've no interest either. Though I never thought I would say this, I'm glad of the break in the news with it as I can't take anymore of the Depp V Heard trial and the aftermath.

That circus isn't over yet either as Amber is appealing. So the Royals are a welcome relief even though I believe the monarchy should go after the Queen. I only read the news online so I can be choosy about what I read.

I do have a favourite royal though and that is Harry ? No surprise there anyone who knows me would say being a free spirit too ?

Glacé cherries and flaked almonds (if no-one has a nut allergy)
And readymade vanilla custard!

The KISS method
(Keep it simple, stupid)
I'm not calling you stupid, someone taught me that route to success in entertaining ?

MaddyB Thu 02-Jun-22 18:07:20

What a miserable lot! Ok the Queen is rich but she GIVES so much. And NEVER complains. And this weekend of celebrations is giving so many people a chance to party with friends and neighbours. We lost all that with Covid. And so may people whingeing about Boris. He got us through Covid, working silly hours. He deserved a drink!!!

maddyone Thu 02-Jun-22 18:27:01

No Maddy, you’ve got that wrong. The Queen doesn’t GIVE anything, we GIVE a great deal of money to her, millions every year in fact!

mar76 Thu 02-Jun-22 20:26:43

No Maddy
You are wrong.
Johnson didn't get us through Covid. It was the SCIENTISTS.

maddyone Thu 02-Jun-22 21:29:47

I didn’t mention either BJ or Covid!

maddyone Thu 02-Jun-22 21:30:22

Weird!
