Am I the only English-speaking mother and grandmother who objects to the use of the word ‘farting’? It seems that most people find it hilarious.

I was watching ‘Come Dine with Me’ recently and one of the male contestants confessed that his wife does it in front of others- not funny, I thought - and nothing to brag about!

MissAdventure Fri 26-Aug-22 18:45:48

That's what we said, if we must mention it at all.

vampirequeen Fri 26-Aug-22 18:51:06

I have to admit that the word 'fart' makes me cringe. It's probably because it was a word we were never allowed to use. My mam hates it. We had to use the word 'trump' which, having seen the last US president, seems somewhat apt.

That said, I am a bit partial to a spot of toilet humour and so am much more tolerant of the odd fart than my mam.

I don’t like the word - I find it childish and vulgar. We certainly were not allowed to use it a children and l did not let my own children use it either. I think if it had to be mentioned at all, we would have used the word trump or loud report. If we did lapse in this direction we were expected to say “pardon me.” While there are far worse words, its seeming ubiquity among some of the population is yet another part of the coarsening of society in general.

I don't particularly like the word fart, but I really don't class it as 'bad language'.

When my daughter was small she used to say oops my bum did a burp ! ??

sodapop Fri 26-Aug-22 19:48:35

rafichagran Fri 26-Aug-22 19:57:02

Not bothered by the word at all.

Blossoming Fri 26-Aug-22 20:01:48

Well I did tell you all I’m common in another thread! grin

Being the youngest of 5, I learned lots of words from my big brothers…

lemsip Fri 26-Aug-22 20:04:06

when we were children and visited my old aunts they used to say 'you'd better be popping off now' when they had enough of us, we used to splutter with giggles which they had no idea why!

Jane71 Fri 26-Aug-22 20:09:07

Nothing wrong with the word, but I find toilet humour rather childish.

Serendipity22 Fri 26-Aug-22 20:32:28

I loath it, its weird because all my working life I have been a carer and so it was a daily occurrence but it never once bothered me, but to talk about it, joke about it or find it necessary to it infront of other, I find it beyond disgusting.

angry

So, not only do I have a disgusting bearded husband but I use disgusting language and I sometimes do disgusting acts in front of others, courtesy of bowel cancer and surgery. Thanks Serendipity grin

Blondiescot Fri 26-Aug-22 20:41:27

Well, as someone who has a chronic bowel condition which means sometimes I just can't help but FART, I'm quite happy to join you in the 'disgusting' club, Blossoming!
As my dear old dad used to say 'better out than in'...

Blossoming Fri 26-Aug-22 20:44:09

Everyone farts Blondiescot. Some people just like to pretend that they don’t!

Someone who worked in a retirement home referred to the passing of wind as a 'botty burb'

Ali08 Sat 27-Aug-22 01:20:18

Passing wind, pharping, letting one off, pumping, letting rip....when you next do a smelly one say, "Can you smell popcorn?" And watch everyone take a deep sniff of the air! grin

I was an adult before I even heard the word fart. It was not in common usage when I was a child obviously or not in the co pany I kept.
I was a nurse and the words used at work were passed wind but at home it was letting off.

At risk of lowering the tone, does anyone remember when public toilets had a coin operated slot on each door which required a penny?

I remember going to the cinema in the early 60s with my school friend and her mum. I always regarded her mum as rather prim and proper. Until we all visited the toilet before our bus home. She came out of the cubicle and declared “Here I am broken hearted, paid a penny and only farted!

Aldom Sat 27-Aug-22 09:45:47

I had a childhood friend who referred to passing wind as.... Letting Polly out of prison.

Here I sit, mean and artful,
Paid a penny, did a cart full!

Fart isn't a swear word confused

MissAdventure Sat 27-Aug-22 09:50:48

It's not as nice as a blow off, though.
I'd take a blow off over a fart, anyday! smile

Grannynannywanny Sat 27-Aug-22 09:51:00

That sounds better value MissA ?
