Yorskshires served to whoever wants them in mine, even us deviant vegetarians with their nut roasts. As does my local pub.

I'm sorry you were disappointed but as others have said you really should have complained ,and to the manager. How will they improve their service if people aren't honest..

Forgot to add - tried a Toby carvery once ……… admittedly it is cheap but ….. soggy frozen veg, overcooked meat etc etc and the wine is pretty grim - sorry that was my experience

I love going out to eat but recently majority of restaurants are overpriced, understaffed, limited menus and badly cooked. Yes you should have complained. I had to send £28 dish back the other day - think they got carried away with the seasoning- you couldn’t taste the fish. They gave me a different meal and deducted the service charge ? That’s a weird one! If you only want a hamburger or pizza your probably ok but the quality generally has deteriorated.

You may think a silly suggestion but are there any nice hotels near you where you could find out prices for a good roast lunch? They may have a special day for pensioners. It is worth asking.

I made a decision years ago to only order food in a restaurant that I couldn't cook, better and cheaper at home.
My husband made amazing pasta sauce from scratch then would complain bitterly when served a pasta dish in a restaurant.
I couldn't convince him not to bother.

I usually find a quiet comment about things which were unsatisfactory works well. You are right to be aggrieved with what you had to pay extra for vs what you didn't get. At the risk of a roasting (sorry!), i can't believe the number of people recommending a Toby carvery, yuk. Cheap food, cheaply served. We opened the door of the one closest to us with a view to having lunch there; all we saw was masses of greedy people with their plates over loaded with food, it was noisy and my idea of hell. I was going to make a further comment but would be accused of being a snob, or as my late DM called it, having standards

I would certainly have said something (quietly) at the time. I’d have thought any good restaurant would bend over backwards to attend to any genuine complaint.

I don’t really understand adults objecting to a quiet, politely worded genuine complaint - making an obtrusive scene would obviously be a different matter!

Having said that, I do remember a dd absolutely begging me not to complain when I was served a gammon ‘steak’ so thin, it resembled a rasher of bacon. But I still did - I wasn’t going to let them get away with it! She was only 10 or 11 at the time, though.

One of my rules to live by is never to have a roast "with all the trimmings" in a pub.

'we paid and didn’t say anything' - that's where you went wrong, I'd say. I'll query anything, even if it's only 50p - as it's the principle that counts, that feeling of being short changed or ripped off. I doubt you'll return, so they've lost a customer now. I'm sure that they'd rather you left happy.

I love Toby Carvery - there’s one just down the road - cheap and cheerful, although they never or very rarely have lamb, my favourite meat ..

Didn't they ask you "is everything all right for you?" That's the moment to say no it is not.
A review on Google or trip advisor would be better than nothing.

I agree about Toby Carvery. I'm a vegetarian but you can help yourself to anything from the servery and there are veggie options.

Last time I asked for Dijon mustard in a pub the waitress, after some thought, said ‘We have French mustard’. Needless to say it was the old Colman’s French mustard.

We ate at a well known gastro pub a couple of weeks ago, it was also Sunday lunch.

The food was only OK.

I have a major gripe though, the menu had beef, lamb and pork, I insisted all the condiments were on the table before the mains arrived ( you really shouldn’t need to request this!) the staff didn’t comply so we were left with food going cold whilst staff went back to the kitchen, eventually someone returned and stated there was no redcurrant and no Dijon mustard.
How does a professional kitchen not check before the menu goes out?
In the time it took to sort all this out I could have nipped to the COOP across the road and bought the bloody condiments.

Regarding the crackling, my husband has a theory, he’s convinced the kitchen staff eat it!

I feel that a lot of these establishments are struggling massively due to rising utilities and lack of staff.
It’s such a shame because they will lose their good reputations.

I would have expected to get a Yorkshire pudding with pork, but I would expect to be given one if I asked for it. They cost next to nothing, do they? Maybe if you'd gone in minutes before close of service and they would run out for the beef eaters it would be reasonable to refuse, but not unless.

I would certainly have complained about missing items from my meal. Leave an honest review. Things won't change for new diners unless feedback is given to the restaurant

I would put something on their website. They need to know they are not up to scratch and will lose customers. Though we only have Yorkshire pudding with beef a lot of Sunday roasts what ever meat comes with them in pubs.

I had a complaint about a meal my son and I went for last week, it was a valid complaint dealt very well with by the restaurant and they did send me a £15 voucher…

That seems like a lot of money for a carvery meal Sasta but I may be a bit out of touch with UK prices. It is beyond the pale to charge £1 for a Yorkshire pudding I think. The whole experience leaves a lot to be desired. Like BlueBelle I would have registered my displeasure at the time but understand why you didn't. Leave your feedback ( no pun intended) on their website or Trip Advisor.

I’m also thinking of what I could have served up for the price of both meals, £42 without drinks. Plus it would have been delicious with crispy roasties, not sad new spuds pretending to be roasties which were soggy. Plenty of leftovers for another day…… I’m not doing very well with my new aim at not moaning about things that do not matter am I? My husband doesn’t like me complaining when we’re out, though he often agrees with the sentiment, he just says we won’t go back. But they don’t learn then and do they care anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️. I may be suffering from old fa*t syndrome when I know I could do so much better. But all that washing up and cleaning if you make it at home 😳.

I understand. I hate eating away from home, especially that ridiculous price would make me moan. Do have a moan!
