Feeling Ancient

My husband is five years younger than me and I always thought we looked about the same age because he’s a little bit weathered (but very handsome as people keep telling) and I’m slim and thought I looked a bit younger than my age. He has just been speaking to a new neighbour who said ‘your wife looks a bit older than you, if you don’t mind me saying. Is she still working?’ I’m really upset now as I feel ancient. I was an exercise instructor before the pandemic which I did alongside a professional job and I was going to look for a venue to do classes (we’ve recently moved) but after that remark I have decided not to bother. My DH thinks I’m overreacting because I am a few years older than him and they thought he was in his early fifties (he’s 57) so I should be glad that they think I’m only in my fifties (I’m 62) but I suddenly feel very old! I also think the neighbour (who’s about 40) is really cheeky making such a personal remark. I’ll get over it because it doesn’t really matter, my DH adores me and there isn’t anything wrong with women looking their age but I can’t stop sulking (very juvenile ironically). Would it bother you?

Would it bother me! Nooooo! I would think she was a cheeky f as in the words of mumsnet, my husband is 5 years younger than me too, she was plainly flirting silly woman, my husband would have told me also I don’t see a problem in him telling you he was just explaining what the nosey neighbour said, the same as I would have told my husband if the roles were reversed, I certainly wouldn’t think about stopping looking out to find classes just because a woman had made a remark that to me is just silly! You enjoy doing what you do so why stop.

How upsetting for you. But not as bad as someone who, when I was with my father recently, thought that he was my husband, ie she had added 30 years to my age. Although, of course, perhaps she thought he had married a dolly bird!

Irrelevant what the neighbour thinks

I am really poor at guessing peoples ages so if the sibject comes up I tend to pitch it younger than I suspect to give them a boost. I thought my usual UPS guy was in his 40s and it turns out hes in his 50s! Difficult to tell with a baseball cap on. He WAS pleased.

Mind you I’m 63 and hubby 66 so I’ll keep away from my nosy neighbour just in case!

Me too merylstreep!

How tactless of your neighbour and such a personal comment which is way out of order. Try not to worry about it, 62 is nothing these days.

If someone's inept remark has upset me I always think Is this going to bother me tomorrow? Next week? If the answer is No then I can forget it there and then.

annodomini Sun 11-Jun-23 13:07:04

Take no heed of what was said by an interfering neighbour. It's only a subjective impression and it's quite likely it was said largely to flatter your husband. Why not start up your exercise class again and invite that neighbour to join. Revenge!

It comes to us all, doesn't it, that someone rams our age down our throats, not meaning to be unkind, but it hits us under the belt.

For me, it was hearing a nurse in the gynae surgical ward telling a young mother, "I'll be back in a minute, I've promised to help an old lady downstairs to her taxi."

I had had surgery and wasn't allowed to lift anything and granted the nurse did not intend me to hear her remark, but still - at 69 I did not feel like "an old lady" - still don't two years later. And to cap it all, the nurse was at the most, six years younger than I! Granted the woman she was speaking to would doubtless have called me old too, it was after all her wean who had kept both the maternity ward and the gyneæ one awake around 4.a.m by his strident disapproval of the world he had just arrived in. Nice healthly lungs at any rate and the strength to use them!

Try to not let it worry you. Five years age difference between you and you husband is nothing uncommon. My husband is five years younger than I but due to ill health looks older than I do (on my good days.)

How typical of this day and age that someones first remark should be about looks. Completely ignore this remark carry on with what you intended to do and ignore the neighbour.

MrsAF Sun 11-Jun-23 09:28:35

I would feel exactly the same as you. I’d sulk for a couple of days but then I’d get over it. It was cheeky, thoughtless and maybe he needs specs? He’s just an idiot though so don’t be upset for too long. I’m sure you look amazing! 😉

Apologies for the overuse of just

How charming (not!) of your husband to tell you what this rude person said!

Unless he thought you'd just take it in your stride and just laugh.

Please take it in your stride and do what the hell you want with your life regardless of rude people.

Wonder at which age it is that we boast about it (rathe rlike we did in childhood).? When I moved into these flats, had a couple of my new neighbours actually commenced their conversation with telling me (with great pride) how old they were.

If I was the OP, I would be flattered that my new neighbour considered my husband whilst younger than me, was so attracted to me. Says a a lot about how good I look!!!

Would most definitely not be revising any plans I had on the random remarks of a stranger.

I remember (years ago) someone said, of my dad "oh he's the man with the very young wife". My mum (his wife) was just 1 year younger than dad and didn't have me until she was 40.
Dad was always fit and kept himself in good shape.
Ignore it.

People have no idea!

Lomo123 Sat 10-Jun-23 21:16:03

How rude. Although as my late dear friend used to say. Who cares what anyone says or thinks about you, if they don't pay your mortgage.

Grammaretto Sat 10-Jun-23 20:48:15

I hate having a reality check!
I like to think I haven't changed much in 20 years and look younger than my 74 years
It's usually a stranger on a bus who brings me down to earth! They'll say something like I remind them of their mum, or their gran..

Please do the exercise class. Don't be put off by a casual remark.
Life is not about looks. It really isn't.

I think someone’s having us on.

yep

AreWeThereYet Sat 10-Jun-23 20:31:31

Agree with M0nica.

Why would you let some stupid remark from someone you don't even know bother you? I agree he was a bit cheeky, or socially inept, as someone else put it. I'm 2 years older than Mr A and it doesn't bother me a bit who knows how old we are.

Calipso Sat 10-Jun-23 20:25:54

Is this neighbour someone whose opinion and judgment you value OP? Someone from whom you might seek advice?
No, thought not.....
See it for what it is and trust your own judgment.

Theexwife Sat 10-Jun-23 20:24:33

It is the neighbour's opinion that you look older than your husband, so he asked if you were still working I don't see anything wrong with that especially as you actually are.

His opinion shouldn’t matter to you, I expect your husband told you as he was feeling pleased about it.
