More royal pomp and circumstance.

I genuinely felt upset and then angry at today's royal event in Edinburgh. How much of our money did it cost?
We have already had a fortune spent on the Queen's funeral and the King's coronation at a time when families
can't afford to feed their children and people are waiting for years for essential medical treatment. When the BBC commentator announced that the eyes of the world were on Scotland I had to turn off the TV.

Wales doesn't want him, anyway, he has given up his Welsh house, so that shows how much he thinks of Wales and its residents.

I don’t think that’s the case. William has said he would prefer to stay locally in whichever part of Wales he might be visiting so the farmhouse would be surplus to requirements.

Wales doesn't want him

Um, do you mean some people in Wales are not keen on the monarchy?
Others may be.

Anniebach Thu 06-Jul-23 22:30:27

William didn’t want the farmhouse

I like a bit of pomp. And circumstance.

The "united kingdom" comprises only the TWO countries who signed the Treaty of Union that is England ,who engineered it and Scotland who was sold out by the "parcel of rogues" Scottish elite against the will of the people .
Wales and NI were aquired in different ways,

Complete waste of money. The country is in dire straits. We need every penny for nhs and children in poverty and homelessness among other ills.
Royals should put a hand in their own vast pockets and pay for these ridiculous events themselves if that's what they want.

Agree!

I respect Hamza Yusuf for attending the ceremony and behaving with absolute correctness and courtesy throughout, despite being a Scots Nationalist and a Republican. I also think that the Scots Greens were silly to miss an opportunity to meet a monarch who has been dedicated to environmental causes for decades, long before they were fashionable. They might have had a fruitful discussion with him for the future of the environment in Scotland.

Yes, Hamza was very polite, welcoming and behaved impeccably, putting his own feelings to one side.

Callistemon21 Thu 06-Jul-23 20:03:01

Sigh again.

The country can afford all these things, the government just needs the will to fund them.

We need a Head of State, preferably apolitical and no H of S should be funding themselves for carrying out what we, as a nation, require of them.

I love all the pomp and circumstance….

Sigh.

His grandmother, the Queen Mother, was Scottish, so he's a quarter Scottish.

I think we all need to give King Charles time to make the many changes which I believe he has already started, before we start bitching about how he spends public money.
Let's face it who would want to be Prime Minister and when will we learn to stop dissing the royal family!

spabbygirl Thu 06-Jul-23 16:30:48

I so agree, the whole notion that one family are somehow different or special just because years ago one of the ancestors grabbed the throne is just crazy. That money could have been better spent elsewhere and if Will really wants to help homeless people his family have a few palaces they could rent out

The “Not my king” chants and banners were just examples of extremely bad manners. People have the right to their opinions, but this was not the time to air them. Just plain rude.

This was exactly the right time, and I was pleased to see that the Republicans were out peacefully protesting, and not ignored by the mainstream media either.
Not all of us agree with this expensive charade.

In this increasingly restrictive political atmosphere I’m not confident that any protests in public, peaceful or otherwise will be allowed very soon.

As a Scot I'm delighted he carried on the tradition. I enjoy the pomp and ceremony. They give many people a much needed feel good boost. The royals are such a huge part of our countries histories, which I find fascinating. I think its a large part of what brings a lot of the tourists to the UK, particularly London. And these have been the first coronation ceremonies for a very long time. I know cost galls many, but I believe King Charles is making real efforts in paring down costs and royal working roles. And I doubt whether we would see our incomes improve even if the royalty were to be abolished.

Aveline Thu 06-Jul-23 15:28:38

Did you not read the full financial position outlined by Oddone? Or do you just want to rant on.

Batworthy Thu 06-Jul-23 15:21:04

The problem of 'damned if they do and damned if they don't' could very easily be solved by the Royals stepping down and living privately on their own considerable funds.
They are probably very nice people individually, but to the country they are simply unnecessary.
There's nothing wrong with the magnificent parades and colourful demonstrations of horsemanship - we all enjoy those, and they are valuable as a source of tourist interest, but the addition of some elderly royal personage in a posh horse and cart doesn't add much to the interest.
Other countries manage very well with more private Royal families, and at far less cost.
The Monarchy is an expensive anachronism which we can no longer afford or justify, and it only serves to further the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Children are going hungry, the sick are not being cared for, and this imbalance needs to be redressed.
Whilst we're at it, the present government should also take a long walk off a short pier.

Skye17 Thu 06-Jul-23 15:19:10

European presidents cost more per head of population than our monarchy costs us. And they don't bring in tourism. Plus if we voted for a president every four years that would probably cause yet more division in the country.

I love the traditional ceremonies and their links to our history.

Turning off the TV had nothing to do with Scotland, a country which I like a lot. It was the inane comment and the notion that all over the world people glued to their TV s. For the Queen's funeral yes, and maybe the coronation.

vivvq Thu 06-Jul-23 15:01:53

NI is an add-on. The full description is the United Kingdoom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Any coronation here would cause lots of problems given the volatile nature of our politics and the fact that we currently have no government. King Charles visited N1 and was proclaimed King here in the same way as Scotland and Wales.

In 2022 the monarchy cost the UK tax payer £85m (give or take), which is around 1p per person. In 2017 (the last available update as yet), the monarchy's contribution to the UK economy was £1.76 billion. So. I think a little extra spent on a bit of pomp and circumstance is well worth it, don't you? Also, King Charles personally contributes millions per year to various UK charities and good causes. People assume the monarchy just take a small fortune off the tax payer and that's it. That's not it. I'm not a big fan of Charles, I must admit (and definitely not of Camilla!), and would much prefer to have had the crown go directly to William, but it is what it is. They work hard for the country (Queen Elizabeth worked right up until 2 days before her death. Not many people are still working in their 90's). They may not do hard manual labour, but it will still be hard, and they get less and less recognition, and more and more abuse. I'm starting to feel ashamed to be British....

I don't dislike Scotland that much that I'd turn off the tv!! 😁
