AIBU - Ring doorbells

So AIBU? My next door neighbours just got a Ring-type doorbell. As I think they are legally required to do, an annoyingly loud American voice cheerfully announces that it is filming EVERY SINGLE TIME that someone walks past our house or a cat or fox strays into their garden and it is driving me to distraction. My home office faces out to the street, and I must have heard it 100 times today. Thankfully I sleep at the rear of the house..

Lots of people have them ….they’re good. But they don’t need to make the noise. Ask them to turn it off!

As others have said on here this ring has not been set properly. sadly, the American voice is part of it, but it should be set so that you never hear it (unless you actually go to that house .

Just pop over tand tell them to set it up properly. You will never hear it again.

Ours doesn’t do that. Definitely needs adjusting.

Im waiting for DHL now with a tracked package. If the courier pulls up outside my house the cctv cameras will send a message to my tablet which I have beside me. If they go around the back (I live in a back to front house) and ring the bell it will play an annoying tune until I answer. Mostly I spot the van before they are halfway up the path and greet them by the door.

Have you spoken to your neighbour about it? They might not realise!

JackyB Wed 02-Aug-23 14:54:36

Surely the neighbour whose bell it is can hear it even more loudly than you.

We have one , you can set it to deliver a message or you can set it not to. Ours says ‘we can’t come to the door right now but if you leave a message we will get back to you ‘ in a terrible American accent.
I’ve not bothered turning it off because one , we are detached and neighbours are about 20 feet away, and two, it only gets rung once every 3 weeks or so 😂.
Most people just knock on the door.

Saw a disturbing programme about this kind of doorbell. This link sums up the warnings about them: www.makeuseof.com/why-you-should-not-get-ring-video-doorbell/

Nothing in that article is particularly worrisome. Most of it is scaremongering. People are far too naive these days and believe everything they read online.

We love ours and would hate to be without it.

Me too! I have mobility issues and lost count of the number of times I've missed people at the door because I was too slow getting there! I don't have to worry about that now as I can answer before they disappear. Also, it saves my legs when JWs or LDSs come knocking, trying to convert me! I can tell them to b*****r off from the comfort of my armchair! grin. The fact that I can make sure the parcel Amazon left on my doorstep, instead of knocking or ringing, stays safe is an added bonus....

My ring doorbell doesn't do that so they must be able to set it to not do it - I would just have a polite word with them

There are some individuals who should not own pets because they don't know how to care for them.

And some should not own Ring doorbells.

Have a polite word with your NDN and tell them to read the instructions. smile

Mine doesn't do that. I would walk over and have a polite conversation with the Ring doorbell (for them to enjoy later).

ElaineI Thu 10-Aug-23 22:54:27

It sounds like they don't understand the settings. You could perhaps suggest that they check the instructions or maybe the cat and fox could! Do they not realise themselves?

I don't think it's a Ring - as ours have never done that. One in the next road did, though, and several neighbours complained to the Environmental Health section of the council. It went off whenever somebody walked past on the pavement. The 'noise nuisance' soon stopped - so obviously they have adjusted the settings.

I wonder if some people are a little hard of hearing as one of our neighbours has had a ring doorbell for months and every time someone comes to their door you can hear the ring alert and any conversation they are having. I do wonder about any unsavoury characters being alerted to their routine of being in or not as I am annoyingly very much aware.

Ring doorbells are wonderful helpers if you have mobility issues. Mine plays a choice of about 6 annoying tunes which really do get on my nerves and can be heard all over the house. If Im not expecting anyone I just disconnect it. It still rings but more softly with a conventional ding ding thats easy to ignore.

I can see who it is and make a decision as to whether I want to talk to them or not. Mostly I dont. Even if I begin a conversation I dont have to open the door. I just tell them Im not at home just now and their ringing had opened up an app on my phone. Then the line becomes bad .... Or I become very deaf. No, whatever your selling I dont buy at the door!

You can have fun with unsolicited callers because you can see their discomfort.

As others have said, ours doesn’t do that either. It needs resetting and doesn’t need to announce that it’s filming if it’s set only to record on their own property. I’d have a word and tell them how annoying it is.

You need to have a word in their shell like.

We have one, it doesn't do that though, but hubby did adjust it to only pick up within our front gate, otherwise it was picking up every passer by, ask neighbours politely to adjust it to a smaller area. It can be done.
