Just listening to our Prime Minister addressing the nation.
It is truly appalling that he is being heckled.
Where on earth are the Police?
Says it all about our Country right now.

I disagree, if the more affluent can’t visualise hunger it follows
no one is capable of visualisation

Exactly this

Totally agree.

There seems to be a continuous theme over many threads that the rich are culpable for all ills and not capable of empathy, or knowing about the ways of the world or the UK

but utterly pointless and simply to enforce that he’s a “good bloke” He’s a rich bloke, living in a different universe to most of us

And Sir Kier Starmer knows what it’s like to rely on food banks?

Don’t forget Sir Keir Starmer campaigned for Jeremy Corbyn to be PM at the last GE…

Absolutely.

You’d think all Labour leaders were ex miners struggling to feed 4 kids on a council estate.

We were talking about our PM!

However Starmer did grow up in a normal household and isn’t married to a billionaire non dom!

Cossy Sat 02-Mar-24 08:27:13

The thread is about our PM! If you guys all want to start another thread about Labour leaders, please feel free. “Whataboutery” doesn’t change the facts about Sunak nor his extremely wealthy cabinet! No one has to use a food bank to have had money worries!

Kandinsky Sat 02-Mar-24 08:28:55

What’s his wife got to do with anything?

So what if he’s rich, most PM’s are!

You don’t have to have struggled to know what it’s like and to care.

The PM’s mother was a pharmacist, his father was a GP.

Should he have not married the person he fell in love with because her parents were wealthy?

Like I said upthread it is not a crime to be wealthy, and it is rather tedious to constantly go on about how rich our MP’s are.

The time and place was all wrong. This should have been read out in parliament - leadership begins there, and Sunak needed to make it plain with a call for moderation of all their language and more respectful behaviour would be a start.

There was no policy announcement, merely a hope that the police would be more effective and unspecified “groups” would be dealt with.

Veritable storm in the teacup.

Yes!

he truth is that extremism takes many forms and for too long we have accepted it here in Britain. Screaming mobs baying for blood outside schools, teachers having to go into protection schemes, their careers in tatters. Parents terrified because their child scuffed a Qur’an. Mobs threatening a kebab shop. It’s insidious.

Perhaps posters want all our MP’s to be poor with no life experience outside of a local housing estate…

I’m not sure what your point here is but I don’t believe Sunak has the slightest idea about struggling to pay his gas bill! Or choosing between heating or eating!

A young man was verbally attacked on the a tube (London Underground) this week, he was wearing a Kippah (sp). He was screamed at that he was responsible for killing babies in Gaza.

Everyone has the right to go about their daily lives without fear of intimidation or being in receipt of racial discrimination.

I don't care that Sunak is rich and married to a very rich woman. What I do care about is the lack of competence of the Tory party he represents which over 14 years has delivered a failing NHS, a housing crisis, a cost of living crisis, bankrupt local Councils and failed social care as well as mortgage hikes after the Truss disaster, not to mention Brexit.

OMG a rich bloke asking us all to be united. I passed a food bank yesterday with a long queue waiting outside. We are not united Rishi, we are divided, and words will not change that, or put food into the mouths of poor children.

Last night on the BBC news they presented an item which showed that “fine dining” establishments had not suffered from the economic problems. They showed some desserts being served up which so many people at the moment could only dream of. Just the thing to see while many families have just collected their meal from a food bank.

I will add that 90% of parliament have never made that choice along with the majority of people in the U.K. (2021/22 22% were thought to be in poverty)

22% is far too many, but it is not all the fault of the rich.

Urmstongran Sat 02-Mar-24 08:46:13

Funny how this thread is now debating the rich -v- the poor.
Why do we collectively ignore the elephant in the room? It’s about Islamists folks.

BBC needs to fact check 14% of London’s fine dining restaurants have closed since 2020, the same amount have closed in Birmingham.

1,000’s of people have lost their jobs in the hospitality industry along with those who provide food/services to it.

I think we seem to hear what we want to hear and ignore or reinterpret the rest. Me, I heard fairly balanced request for us to recognise how much we want the same and how destructive extreme politics are, be it on the left or the right. I heard him talk about our right to protest but the responsibility that comes with it and was pleased he'd dropped the inflammatory phrase, mob rule. I heard that the police will be more "effective" at dealing with those who break the rules. Was it a necessary intervention? I think so. Our politics are getting dirtier and more extreme, it's been apparent on social media and I don't think it represents most people in this country but it gives license to the nasties to spread their bile. I'm not a Tory voter or a Sunak fan but at least he's trying to distance himself from the suellas, Anderson s, Gallaghers and their unpleasant ilk. About time too.
