Should Gransnet delay the first posts from new posters?

Oh dear! I've been on Gransnet for some time but don't contribute much though I find many of the topics very interesting. I hope I can still stay!

Some websites automatically check a new member's email address and their device "callsign" against those of known troublemakers, both on that site and in online lists of spammers and trolls (that is more or less how banks etc know that it is not a good idea for you to send money to certain ibdividuals organisations) If that were done, many would never reach the point of actually posting.

Sometimes HQ don't respond and take hours to delete the thread.

I just presume that if there is more than one post then it means it has been reported so I don’t click on it.
Some of the threads this morning didn’t need reporting IMO because there were so many I thought the powers that be couldn’t miss them. Was I wrong?

If a neutral check is made on an application to join, by a bit of programming (aka an algorhythm) that compares their email address and the "callsign" of the device on which it is applying (every device has one!!) with a list of known trollers and spammers (yes, lists exist too) and the application turned down or referred to moderators if there is a match, then NO-ONE needs to be personally "qualified".

How on earth do you think that my bank knew to advise me that a money transfer I had tried to make was to a website that was known to be dodgy? By comparing the details of the recipient of every transfer with a list of those that should not be trusted, that is how.

Those checks are made automatically and instantly - no delay.

If you try to post on some interest groups on Facebook, there may be a pause before your post appears. They don't publicise just what they are monitoring posts for, or what checks they are running on them, but the moderators of each group has the power to block unwanted applicants. Gransnet is very lightly moderated - but that is not the usual case.

I agree with Elegran - there are other discussion forums where there is a delay after joining before you can post. But if someone has been a member for a while but hasn't posted previously, they should be allowed to post without any delay. The spam posters presumably join and post immediately.

I agree with you Elegran no one’s talking about days waiting nearly everything you join on FB needs to be approved and it normally takes an hour or two
Other local chat groups I have been on required a check of new members before the g ahead to post

Anyway just saying but they are all starting again tonight there are a load more just arriving as we speak

Being someone who believes in democracy I don't agree with a delaying period. The current users of the site will decide. The response,s or lack of them, from the OP or other contributors work fine in either supporting the OP or dissuading them from further posts, in other words we police ourselves which I think if for the best. We are a bunch of mature adults capable of making our own decisions, not a bunch of weak, vulnerable old folk in need of protection.

I assume the two weird threads making their way down the Active list this morning are like the ones people were complaining about yesterday, are they? I missed all the excitement then! I don’t know if a delay would help, but then a bit of checking on the part of GNHQ wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I think new posters would find it very discouraging and would quite probably leave. I would have. The adverts are very obvious and so are the daft ones from young people having a laugh.
