Should Gransnet delay the first posts from new posters?

The vast majority of new posters on Gransnet just want to chat to other people like themselves or ask for advice from people who have had similar experiences to them, but from time to time a spammer or worse joins with the single purpose of disrupting the normal running of the forums.

Would it be a good idea for posts and new threads from an unrecognised username to be held back for a cooling period from they are added? It could be until the new account has been checked to be genuine, or just for a set length of time. either of these could make bots/spammers/trolls less keen to post their rubbish/spam/poison.

I disagree Nanna8 lots of forums have a delay while you are approved it is a fairly simple process I think and would save not only this midnight rush but the long convoluting posts that might well be genuine but get a poor reception because they sound so far out
A lot of posters don’t answer these long involved posts or say ‘I think this is a bot’ which can be harsh if it’s just a worried person not expressing themselves very well
Even in real life things are rarely instant you have to apply and be approved and hopefully we are only talking about hours or a day or so at the most and the admins wouldn’t have nearly so much to do as they would nt be getting loads of us reporting posts
Well that’s my take on it anyway

I think it’s impossible to vet new posters but at least GN respond to reports. I have received unwanted pestering PMs today from a new poster (I think a man) who I hope GN will ban.

If the site only relies on members reporting posts then it’s not likely to suddenly start policing threads.

After spam is reported, it still remains visible. Should it not be moved to a quarantine section for admins to evaluate rather than taking up space in the forums?

A captcha picture challenge before posting might stop a bot.

It can take hours for SPAM to be removed. It all depends if any Mods are on duty.

On the other hand, sometimes it's quite quick. I've reported 2 today as spam and they've been removed quickly. Of course, they were both through the day, and some of the rubbish has been appearing in the evenings.

At least if someone says that they have reported something, it should be a message to others not to keep adding to the spam thread or replying to the spam post.

A worthwhile proposal. Trolls are dedicated to being negative and obviously trying to cause psychological damage.

This would be a good idea.
