Would you have phoned the police ?

I just want to have some feedback as to whether other people would have phoned the police or did I overreact ?
I was in the town's bus station and saw an old man pushing a little shopping trolley. He was dressed in 2 hospital gowns and a very dirty looking jacket. He had old slippers on. Nobody was taking any notice of him but I felt that his vulnerability put him at risk of harm. I approached him and asked if he was ok. His answer was " I'm walking to death,f off "
I phoned the police who were concerned on the phone and said they would send a patrol out to look for him as they have a duty of care.
I couldn't do anything else and just watched him walk out into town
Would you have intervened or do we just accept that some people in society are vulnerable but have the right to live as they please ?

You did exactly the right thing Jaffacake, I would have phoned the police too.

I agree. I would have done the same.

Your instincts were correct. Even if he was perfectly fine, you were alarmed.
If there was nothing to worry about, the police would quickly see that.
Better to be safe than sorry

You did the right thing.
He may have been known to the police who had been called before, but you did what you could.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 20-May-24 19:41:43

I would have called the police too.

AGAA4 Mon 20-May-24 19:45:03

He was obviously very vulnerable so you were right to call the police.

Mollygo Mon 20-May-24 19:45:09

Even if they knew about him, you did the right thing calling the police.

Maggiemaybe Mon 20-May-24 19:47:23

Yes, I’d have done the same. The fact that the police were concerned and said they would check shows that you did the right thing.

Gillycats Mon 20-May-24 19:47:23

You definitely did the right thing. Clearly there is something not right. Thank you for helping him.

Parsley3 Mon 20-May-24 19:55:16

I would have called the police too. I hope he is in a safe place now.

When I rejoined the bus queue 2people said that they would not have approached him as he might be violent. He looked sad and harmless to me.

rafichagran Mon 20-May-24 20:03:29

You did the right thing.

Jaxjacky Mon 20-May-24 20:08:49

I’d have done the same thing and did so recently, sadly that didn’t end well.

M0nica Mon 20-May-24 20:11:46

Yup, I join the others, you did the right thing.

lemsip Mon 20-May-24 20:17:06

I would have phoned the police aswell

You did the right thing. Rather be safe than sorry.

i don't think i'd have rung the police, but i can see why you did and understand your concern.
i think i'd have just assumed he was a homeless person, many of whom do not want any interference.

Joseann Mon 20-May-24 20:27:16

I think you did the right thing, though I never really know what to do for the best in such situations. I've occasionally seen people in hospital gowns and slippers on the tube, and if you stand outside St. Mary's Paddington quite a few patients in gowns walk up and down the road smoking or talking to themselves.

Floradora9 Mon 20-May-24 21:39:50

Well done you did the right thing.
On a humerous note. My friend's husband was taking himself off to buy his daily paper. He is quite bowed and walks with a stick and his name is David. As he toddled along two poilicement came up to him and one said " where are you off to David ? " He replied and they persisted asking if he was sure he should be out and was he really just going for a paper. They asked where he lived and he told them it was just up the road from where they were . It turned out an elderly man also called David has absconded from an retirement home which was just up the road too and the policemen thought they had found him.

Good for you Jaffacake. You were quite right to do as you did.

Bellanonna Mon 20-May-24 21:48:07

That’s funny Floradora 😅

Grammaretto Mon 20-May-24 22:03:24

Just shows appearances can be deceptive Floradora

You did the right thing, the police would possibly call for some sort of medical help for him.

Bonnybanko Tue 21-May-24 05:23:42

Jaffacake2 like all of us we have a duty to care and it’s my belief you did the right thing by phoning the police, you were looking out for someone you believed was vulnerable

well done to you
