To think GN is much more pleasant than MN?

This is not intended to be some sort of froth/unpleasant thread.

It's just that genuinely to scroll MN you need a bulletproof vest - here is a bit different.

To be true, I have no idea what I am even doing on GN.

I'm not even 30!

Hopefully no one will come after me with pitchforks grin

This forum is quite enough for me. I need to get my life back.

I use both sites, and find Gransnet kinder and more realistic.
On Mumsnet there is often advice to a poster to leave the relationship, based on what seems to be quite flimsy reasons.
I think the older generation have a better understanding that relationships have to be worked on. That's a generalisation of course, but it's the impression I get.

I have looked at Mumsnet but it is too nyah for me. There are some very annoying posters and some very rude ones, too. We get annoying ones as well,of course but they are in the minority and at least you can communicate with them and they are not so abusive and immature.

Gransnet may seem mild and cuddly but there is a darker side! It's generally more right wing, anti-feminist and sadly I have seen racist and xenophobic views expressed quite happily.

Completely agree.

I'm probably not the right person to comment, but I do think both "sides" give as good as they get on GN, and are entitled to express themselves.
Posters are often making connections, saying things should be done a certain way because of this, that or the other that happened in their long lives. I'm guessing MN posters, due to their age, have less baggage, fewer experiences of life, so maybe see things more for what they are.
Maybe nanna8 is right to say a certain maturity prevents GN posters from being too abusive.
I don't really know.

I agree Joseann, people should be able to state their views. I don’t think we should let openly rascist, xenophobic, or sometimes libellous, comments stand though, even if we get called the Gransnet police. Sometimes comments are really shocking.

Oreo Sun 02-Jun-24 17:20:33

The subjects of threads are often more entertaining on MN I find.

Oreo

The subjects of threads are often more entertaining on MN I find.

Is that because we lose the art of laughing as we age, and because the younger posters are less prone to dwelling on things because they're busy in their lives?

Oreo Sun 02-Jun-24 17:27:57

It could well be Joseanne I know I sometimes come on here and look at the thread titles and go straight over to MN.

I would say the opposite. The younger people on MN seem to get tied in knots, and stressed, about things that I don’t think the (mainly) older people on GN do.

Oreo I’m with you. I’ve been known to splutter over my morning cup of tea (yes I’m in bed, I have no young children). As I read the fast n furious comments on some mumsnet threads.
Joseann I wonder if it’s the 2nd, that as young mums we were/they are, so busy, the ruminate less. We definitely laughed more, well I did.
I still have the lucky capacity to laugh at disaster thankfully, but it’s diminished I confess

I agree op

I had a laugh at gransnet being right wing! Really ? I think it is quite balanced overall but definitely more to the left. Maybe my left is right is all I can think! I also agree that there are some anti semitic comments and people who appear to think Netanyahu represents the views of all Jewish people. Ah well, that’s life I suppose.

biglouis Mon 03-Jun-24 01:29:39

I often have a good laugh on Mumsnet and you do sometimes need your tin hat on there. However I have seen some posters (who are experts in a particular field) point an OP in a really useful direction to get further help and advice.

The language does not bother me. I can do a pretty hard line in verbal abuse myself. Gransnet has some very outdated ideas in certain areas and often an unwillingness to engage in a robust debate. To many weak snitches.

NotAGran55 Mon 03-Jun-24 06:39:59

The two forums are very different and I drop in and out of both.

The AMA (Ask Me Anything ) threads on Mumsnet are both interesting and can be highly entertaining.

HI soothed hope your still enjoying GN, age is no barrier. I was a late starter at uni 56.so created an group and resources for "mature students" which at uni are classed as being over 25, so how old did I feel, anyway the group was successful with all ages and the majority being in the 23-35 age group. so age young or old shouldnt be a barrier to anything, but I get what you say that we are much more chilled than MN, thankfully. keep enjoying x

Mamie Mon 03-Jun-24 07:14:08

I enjoy Mumsnet. The book threads are good (especially the Chalet School fans) and on other threads I enjoy seeing the lively and informed views of people who are actively working in different professions.
The applying for medicine thread is amazing (essential reading in our family for the past year); there is so much expertise to enlighten this most complex of educational procedures.

Ive never seen a right wing comment on GN, the run of threads are left of centre which is fair enough, MN can get very combative but that reflects a younger generation who are much more outspoken. I have 3 DILs who are very like that, far more assertive than most in my generation

Yes I love the "ask me anything" threads on Mumsnet. Ive been tempted to do some myself but so far resisted the temptation.

I dont own a car but I LOVE the parking threads on Mumsnet where some oik has parked in another person's drive or similar. I also love the "bad neighbour" threads and have picked up some great ideas for revenge.

The child rearing threads are of little interest to someone like me who is proudly childfree. Mumsnet has a very good "childfree" section.

The MN gardening pages are delightful, much sharing of photos and advice. The posters are supportive and polite. If you're into gardening, it's definitely worth a look. Most of the site is a bear pit but gardening is a breath of fresh air.
