AIBU to find unreal threads annoying?

I know some people find them amusing, funny, or that they pass some time harmlessly.

I find them annoying amongst other things. Irritating. I think ,hasnt someone got anything whatsoever, better to do in life?

I often wait and see if the op at least returns to a thread, before bothering to reply.

Doesnt help that I am not always right as to which threads are duds, and the handful which turn out to be real.

Just ranting really.

No I don't think it is odd people post from the US, why would it be? It's just social media and gransnet is an open forum that clearly welcomes anyone

I think it is well odd behaviour.

I understand being wary of potential scams but I am also wary that potential GRANS are coming here for help and getting a less than pleasant welcome

Besides, troll hunting is against the rules for the site and recently I have seen people get 24 hour bans for doing it

It is interesting to see how people respond.

Yes they are tedious and encourage my mischievous side to post something I shouldn’t, there is another one at the moment other than the obvious ones I’m suspicious of, I’ll sit on my hands.

As well as what AGAA4 says?

At least I do think it can make people more wary of scams, the amount of unreal threads there are.

They are participating in social media, the same as you. There are threads I find irritating or boring so I dont read them, I wouldn’t say they should not be written.

Even if they mislead?

AGAA4 Fri 31-May-24 14:39:00

There are so many coming from the US about difficult DiLs that it's no wonder some of us are wary.
I believe most of us on GN genuinely want to help anyone with a real problem, wherever they come from, but when you have been hoaxed you start to doubt whether the problem is real. This is hard on those who do need help so it is annoying when people post a problem that isn't real.
Once bitten twice shy comes to mind.

Doesn't look good for the 'wedding breakfast' does it JaneJudge.

IMO it depends on the thread, if it's amusing then leave it for others to read and be amused by rather than report.

My trouble is, I am never 100% I am correct.

Especially when say 10 people post on what I would think is a suspicious thread.
I then start to question myself.

I actually feel it ruins the whole forum when threads are full of comments about it not being real etc

Especially when it is a thread from the US and people comment as if people from the US aren't allowed on this forum... It is so unwelcoming and rude

People need to just choose to engage or not and report if needed... It's turning into a complete paranoia fest around here

But when to report?
I dont think I have ever reported anything.

Dont you think the fact that some seem to originate from the United St ates, a tad, um, odd?

I have been tempted to look up if there are many social media chat sites in the US, but thought, there has to be. Surely?

Would any of the people in the Uk think, aha, I wont post on a Uk social media forum, I will post on a US one?!

No, you are not being unreasaonable fancythat, occasionally I find them rather amusing but more often than not, I find them annoying.

I think this is one of the more amusing ones, but there have been worse on MN.

My thoughts too soothed and why I didn't believe the OP; kept me amused for the length of time it took me to read it though.

hmm all those red flags SynchroSwimmer.

I think this may be a satire piece or something - with a communist you would expect red flags, so maybe the joke is there?

I am a communist and sit on normal chairs, dont have giant posters of lenin and dont know any other commies who do that!

Yes a red flag to highlight a red flag🤣
Fun though.

Not prime comedy, but cheered me up a bit =]
