Maybe the brother can re arrange the wedding like all those people had to re arrange their appointments when the M25 came to a standstill!

Cressida Gethin jailed for 4 years.

As I said uptrend, if you commit a crime, then it is incumbent on you to accept the consequences.
I understand from the judges ruling that this young woman has an outstanding suspended sentence, so, clearly, incarceration was inevitable at the next breach of the law.
As she is a self - proclaimed intelligent person, surely she understood this?
The rights , or otherwise, of her cause, should not affect how we treat lawbreaking.
If we disagree, maybe we lobby against the law, but we should not expect the judicial sentencing guidelines to be affected by age/ intellect/ imminent social engagements .

Lord, but these Trust Fund minted Cressida's, Tarquin's, Philomena's, Marmaduke's and Petronella's may or may not benefit from a dose of reality, courtesy of His Majesty's Prison's, but I would be satisfied that some kind of Karma had caught up with them.

I knew a lovely Philomena. It's an Irish name.
(Just saying)

These people are fighting for the human race. The sentences were/are too harsh and they will be marked out of certain jobs for the rest of their lives.
It makes me think of the suffragettes.

If she has to be punished, as the prisons are overcrowded, shouldn’t she be tagged to stay at home?

Callistemon213 Sat 27-Jul-24 16:58:52

I'd fight for endangered species.

The problem is too many humans for the planet to sustain us all.

This isn't her first offence, she was already on a suspended sentence from her last court appearance. Her offences are escalating, this one is for conspiracy. Do you honestly think she would be constrained by a tagging device? She knew the consequences of further offences but obviously thought she was above the law and would be treated very lightly.

“Suspended sentences are custodial sentences, but rather than the defendant serving the sentence immediately, it is suspended on condition that the defendant commits no further offences and abides by any requirements that the court chooses to attach. ”

First lesson of persuasion. Dont hack off those that could support you.

Similar venom and scorn accompanied those women who disrupted life hugely in order to win the vote. They were bitterly condemned by many. Twas ever so. Talking and educating hasn't worked on those equally entitled twats who are incensed that they're being asked to avoid flying and driving so much. This is an emergency. If governments and populations take note we won't have liveable world for the coming generations. But it's ok, fly off to Teneriffe whenever you like on package flights. It's your right.
The difference is made my millions who make the effort imperfectly, not a few who do it perfectly. Occasional flying, for instance, would be far less of an issue if everyone took a few less flights and used their cars less. But no one listens, so desperate remedies, however unpopular and difficult, are necessary.
I do feel uncomfortable about some of their methods but I can understand exactly why they're doing what they do. The judges have got it wrong imprisoning them as they did with the suffragettes. And our prisons are too full as it is.
I fully expect to be shot down in the flames of indignation but frankly, my dears.....

mokryna Sun 28-Jul-24 11:26:44

Rowantree thank you

Once again, Rowantree, the vote for women was secured ultimately by the efforts of the suffragists, who did not condone violent methods to secure the vote because it antagonised as many as it impressed. They stopped all aggressive action at the outbreak of the First World War and worked tirelessly at jobs previously undertaken by men, convincing their harshest critics of their entitlement to a vote.
The Judges 'have got it' right and I hope the sentences are upheld.

The Suffragists tend to be airbrushed out of history, though.

Mokryna, we sit here, typing into GN on our devices made using scarce resources and frequently produced by the highest polluting countries, shipped over here in yet more polluting transport.
We learn about the events by watching and listening on the same or other devices, using electricity from whatever sources your fuel provider uses, cook our food (often with a carbon footprint), wash our clothes and ourselves, and clean our houses.
We can thankfully tell ourselves that we aren’t destroying the environment -*as much* as everyone else.
Then we hear from someone involved in stopping others from taking part in important, sometimes vital, lifesaving activities, and she/her parents are twining that she’ll miss a family wedding.
Do they not see how ludicrous it is?

Rowantree Sun 28-Jul-24 19:06:22

Oh ffs.
One admittedly daft comment made by a frustrated mother does not negate the whole Just Stop Oil movement.
It's not the wedding, or even in people's admittedly frustrating missed hospital appointments. Unless we ALL wake up and change how we live, we won't have any world left because we've assumed we can continue as we are and don't really believe the 'hype'. It's easy to dismiss the protestors as feckless and irresponsible. They're far from it. I recall similar sneers being made decades ago when my parents took us on Aldermaston matches, and against the Greenham common women. If groups of people in weren't courageous enough to protest strongly in order to be heard, nothing would ever change, minds and views included.

Do me a favour - these out-of-touch narcissists are lucky enough to be going through life on a financial feather bed.
Mummy, Daddy and a Loads-a-Money trust fund will guarantee they'll never be in danger of needing a job.
Unlike the ordinary, everyday people whose lives they like to mess up with their antics.

Rowantree Sun 28-Jul-24 20:04:10

Wow, some rather bigoted viewpoints here. I remember them well from my own yoof.
Been reading the Daily Hate?

Ah well.

Allsorts Sun 28-Jul-24 20:34:37

Lets hope she learns something,.

GrannySquare Sun 28-Jul-24 20:57:13

@Rowantree I see your point, but recollection is that Greenham Common had peaceful protests with minimal disruption to the lives of everyday people. Likewise, I believe, for Aldermaston.

The JSO Hallam et al were convicted of conspiracy for events that would if successful would have brought chaos & indeed this was the intention. Hallam has stated on social media that he finds it acceptable that ordinary people may loose their lives. He & other JSO activists have contempt for others. There have been a string of JSO protests that have caused criminal damage & impeded citizens from going about their lawful business.

There is no comparison between the behaviour of marchers to Aldermaston & camps at Greenham Common.

No, but being unaware of how what you do and say will affect your cause seems to be a habit with that family.

Reasonable people don’t need to swear . . . but maybe you do.

And you’re still doing all the things I mentioned in my post.
Others do know about trying to be more ecologically aware. You only have to read the efforts GNs have posted with regard to saving fuel and water and recycling. Just they don’t need to vs about it.

Rowantree Sun 28-Jul-24 22:56:53

Mollygo Why, then, I'm not reasonable, then. Who's to judge?

I'm sure some GNs do their best for the environment, as many of us do, within the constraints of our car-and-flight crazed society. But it doesn't go nearly far enough. Governments have to take note and be shocked into it if they turn the other way. Desperate remedies, but arguably necessary ones. Writing to your MP or a polite letter to the Times ain't cutting it. It remains to be seen whether the voices of Chris Packham and David Attenborough will clear through deaf eardrums in time to make a difference. Watch this space.

Callistemon213 Sun 28-Jul-24 23:00:53

Hallam is an anarchist. He has now jumped on the Just Stop Oil bandwagon but he has a history of disruption yet keeps all those gas-guzzling vehicles on his farm.
How does he find time to farm productively? Where does his funding come from?

Callistemon213 Sun 28-Jul-24 23:02:02

I like Chris Packham and David Attenborough and would listen to them but not to anarchists who have ulterior motives.

JenniferEccles Sun 28-Jul-24 23:03:38

There really is a Cressida!
You couldn’t make it up!

No sympathy whatsoever from me.
Oil and gas are going to be needed for years to come.
These protesters will come to realise that in time.

Rowantree Sun 28-Jul-24 23:05:30

Grannysquare my parents were among the first sit-down demonstrators arrested by the police. Hands thrown up in horror at the audacity and dreadful behaviour. Ditto year after year at countless marches and demonstrations. It's all relative. My daughter was arrested at Faslane for blocking the road to the base. They knew they'd be arrested. My daughter was, frankly, terrified, but her terror of nuclear weapons was worse. We had a phone call from the police informing us of her outrageous behaviour, expecting us to be shocked and appalled. Quite the opposite.
So don't play down the attitudes then. It's all relative.

Rowantree Sun 28-Jul-24 23:12:45

I'm sure they've had worse slurs than being called anarchists. Been there, heard that before and avoid that newspaper.
