Can somebody confirm that today is 7th NOVEMBER please?
I have just 'experienced' 3 different supermarket ads in the last 30 minutes!
Can we not just have November PLEASE?
By 25th December we are surely all heartily sick of it...

It’s not just the supermarkets, I saw a house with the Christmas tree and decorations all up this afternoon. I don’t get it.

midgey Thu 07-Nov-24 18:44:28

I have just passed a house with a fully decorated Christmas tree in the window!

MissInterpreted Thu 07-Nov-24 18:45:32

I don't get it either, but then I loathe xmas. But apart from that, I genuinely feel that the earlier someone puts up their tree and decorations, the more it kind of devalues the whole thing.

Fleur20 Thu 07-Nov-24 18:56:04

Devalues... that is my feeling exactly.. I feel sorry for parents of youngsters, how can you get to Christmas and make it special when it has been ongoing for almost 2 months?

Babs03 Thu 07-Nov-24 19:00:21

Somebody near us puts their tree up end of October and doesn't take it down until February. It all seems to be a competition now on how soon people will put up the tree, who will put loads of lights on the outside of their house, who will buy the most unneccessary presents, and who will have the biggest bestest Xmas dinner attended by the most family and friends. And if you don't tick all the boxes you are not enjoying Xmas.
I've stopped trying, just go with the flow and do the absolute minimum until New Years Day then the tree and decs come down for another year.

Beechnut Thu 07-Nov-24 19:01:09

I received my first Christmas card today 🎄

MissAdventure Thu 07-Nov-24 19:09:00

The only ad I ever liked seemed to disappear, probably because it dealt with something non frothy.

I'm afraid I can't get sentimental about a bloody carrot.

BlueBelle Thu 07-Nov-24 19:10:17

Missinterpreded I agree not my time of year at all and must totally dilute any excitement others might have If the decs are up for weeks if not months, awful

My GP surgery has a tree bedecked in tinsel in the foyer I nearly had a rant about it but decided not to, it’s hard enough to get an appointment as it is.🤬

Astitchintime Thu 07-Nov-24 19:15:28

I detest all the commercialism and pressure selling........it's just not Christmas any more!

Don't get me wrong, I don't spend just because it now seems the norm but I simply feel that people have lost sight of the true meaning and it is just an excuse to eat and drink as much as humanly possible and spend money on tat that breaks before the New Year.

Crikey! 🙄

I think the supermarket adverts have to come out early. If you're ordering Christmas food to collect or get delivered, items run out and become unavailable if you wait too late.
It must be a logistical nightmare for them in terms of stock control.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Nov-24 19:19:23

Christmas cards go straight in the bin, here. blush

I feel rotten, but I don't want them.

Freya5 Thu 07-Nov-24 19:59:30

Bah humbug. Christmas is what you make it, not what the supermarkets want it to be, Christmas is about family, not mounds of food and presents. The real meaning is being lost through cynicism, greed, and pushing an agenda that I try and block out. Dislike all the Christmas adverts, all they want you to do is spend money. As for Christmas cards, I buy charity ones, so all get a little Christmas cheer, in the real sense of the season, and I like to receive them too. Part of our culture which I love.
Having my neighbours 5 year old telling me she hates Christmas, guess why, I'm glad our country still celebrates it. Long may it remain.

charley68 Thu 07-Nov-24 20:06:18

Morrisons has REAL Christmas trees on sale!!!!!!!!!

Jeez, what state are they going to be in come xmas day?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 07-Nov-24 20:17:46

I understand the need for supermarkets to advertise early. So many people place click and collect and delivery orders early so they can get their slots

Babs03 Thu 07-Nov-24 21:53:20

I don't like many ads but the one for Amazon with the caretaker singing on stage in a jacket is a nice one.

I feel rotten, but I don't want them.

We don't get many anymore, the grown family don't 'do' cards, their generation don't, and have lost a lot of friends in the past few years, am not enormously careless I mean they have died, and I don't work anymore so don't get cards from colleagues.
I sort of miss it in a way, could tell from the handwriting on the card who it was from, and it was a way of keeping in touch with friends up North where I used to live.
But I would also throw them out after a while, I suppose is just more waste.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Nov-24 22:27:02

It is just a waste.

My mum's always looked beautiful, with all the cards she got, but she really went out of her way to send them, too.

When I had to take over getting them for her, there was "from our house to yours", "to wonderful neighbours" "to a lovely couple", "to friends we don't forget"... it drove me batty! smile

Athrawes Fri 08-Nov-24 11:02:50

I'm bored with Christmas adverts already. I find them really irritating. I just can't get into Christmas yet so no doubt I'll have a big rush!!!!

Harris27 Fri 08-Nov-24 11:06:52

I love Christmas so at the moment I can put up with it. Haven’t got my tree up though definitely a December thing for me.

bluebird243 Fri 08-Nov-24 11:28:57

I went into a large store to look for something mundane yesterday. I was amazed at the huge displays taking up enormous space full of Christmas tat, mostly non biodegradable. I can't see how they will possibly sell it all. Ridiculous as it' was 7th November too.

Then to think this is reproduced in thousands of large stores [and the waste it will produce] countrywide made me feel nauseous. Gone are the days when we went out to find ivy, mistletoe, holly, rose hips etc to make our own decorations and/or wreaths for the front door. My Mum would also find interesting twigs and pine cones and make arrangements, often spraying them gold or silver for eg.

I dislike consumerism, commercialism and greed. If short of money for bills and food then why waste it on this cheap plastic, synthetic, artificial rubbish.

bluebird243 Fri 08-Nov-24 11:30:26

I've yet to see a TV ad for the big stores that I like yet this year. Possibly the Amazon one. They go on for far too long too.
